It's the job of the recruiter to convince you that their branch of service is the best one to get into. They'll promise you the world and do all the song and dance to have you sign on the dotted line. And of course you have to take some tests to see what you place among the recruits that are signing up. Try to act surprised when after taking one of these tests that you scored the highest in the area.
Now I'm kind of curious why in the world would you want to join the Army? Are you that patriotic or do you like the Movie Black Hawk Down? If I were you, I'd go to college and get a degree. There's no reason for you to join at this point. But that decision is totally up to you. I'd do a little more homework first and talk to people who's been in. They'll give you some sound advice. Don't believe what the recruiters tell you. Let me stress this again "It's their job to lie!!!"

Well, I did do what you suggested. I went to college, and then joined the Army. I found out that was a stupid mistake for two reasons:

1. If I had joined the Army first, I would have gotten all the GI bill money.
2. If I had joined the Army first, I would have had the discipline to be a better student and know better how to set goals and standards and then attain them.

Don't listen to Ying Yang, I don't think he knows much about the military first hand. Listen to the guys that have been there, done that.

Edit: Get any special promises from a recruiter or counselor in writing!!!!

Are you saying that you volunteer to kill for money?
There are many other ways to get the discripline that are much more productive, such as joining the Red Cross & the alike to help people that need help, which is much more noble than mudering.

Please don't turn this into some flame war. If you disagree with the possible war, that's your agenda, but this thread is not talking about that. There are plenty of other threads where you can talk about that sh*t.

Yeah, the US military is full of cowboys licking their lips at the thought of killing as many Iraqi civilians as possible.

I can see why Sadam and Bush can find so many people that can?t think for themselves to be their henchmen.

Thank you for the intelligent reply.

Well, I did do what you suggested. I went to college, and then joined the Army. I found out that was a stupid mistake for two reasons:

2. If I had joined the Army first, I would have had the discipline to be a better student and know better how to set goals and standards and then attain them.

So you're assuming I haven't been in the service and that the GI bill is free? You have to pay $100 bucks a month for 12 months. A lot of people don't get the GI Bill and kicked themselves in the ass because they didn't when they got out. So what makes you think you'll have the discipline to be a better student when you get out? Are you telling me you won't need some refresher courses on the General Ed classes because you've been in for 4 to 6 years that you'll do as well as you would when you just got out of high school?

Are you saying that you volunteer to kill for money?

This is the last time I'm responding to you. Like the other poster said, take your agendas somewhere else like PETA that will listen to your ridiculous liberal BS. You should educate yourself before you start bashing someone or their ideals. Learn something about the armed forces before you start spouting off such tripe. I proudly served 17 years in the US Army and wished I would have joined as soon as I could at age 17. I would be a better person today if I had. Instead, I waited until I was 22. I still gained a lot of experience, but I wish I would have had that knowledge about myself sooner than at age 22.

It seems to me that you are one of those people who think everyone in the military simply follows orders and will do so blindly. Talk to some veterans who have been there rather than college professors who have never had any experience off a college campus, I think you'll find people who are much more developed overall and who have given more to society and our great nation than the people who seem to think they are above everyone else and try to warp young minds into their way of thinking.

I think he's saying he'll have a better work ethic after being in the Army. My dad still runs a few miles every other day or so, habit he picked up in the Army I imagine:) I know it changed my brother for the better...he's been serving in Germany for over 3 years and loving it.

I enlisted under the Montgomery GI bill, and I paid nothing for it.

When I talk about having more discipline, I say it from the standpoint that I was a typical, partying college student that cared more about where the next party was and was satisfied with making barely passing grades. The Army taught me to accept nothing but the best performance from myself and to continually keep pushing to exceed high standards.

I'm not saying the courses are any easier, I'm saying I would have found college easier because I would have not moved directly out of Mom & Dad's house to a dorm room and would not have had the self discipline problems that I had. I didn't learn self discipline until I was in the Army.

Based on your posts so far, I really doubt you've been in the Navy, but I can't really comment on the Navy because I know little about it. If you want to argue about the Navy, do it with Dave Sohmer, not me.

I was born in the midle of hell that your govenment help created, and I have been shot at by the Viet Cong, shelled on by the South Vietnamese, and bombed by the American. And, many of my family members have died because of the war.

I can understand there is a need to defend your country, but volunteer to invade others isn?t a noble thing to do.

Sounds like sound advice to me. There is plenty of good reason to join now before you go to college, and I already listed two of the best you'll ever find.

I guarantee that if you talk to enlistees, not draftees, you'll find they found it was definitely an enrichening experience. For that matter, most of the draftees probably will too.

Ask happypuppy, he was drafted. Ask Dave Sohmer, he enlisted. Don't take my word for it, there's a lot of vets in this discussion group.

I'm going to participate in any more flames, I want to answer Emveach's questions.

I have talked to many of my uncles, cousins, and friends of the family that were in the war. And, they all told me it is a sad time, and it was a sad time for me as well.

The best story is was from my 2 uncles (brothers), one were drafted to fight for the north side & the other were drafted to fight for the south.

My father were against the war & was put to hard labour camp for 4.5 years, while his sister husband also were against the war and were put in jail by the south for 20 years & the north for 12 years.

Need I say more............?

How the fsck did I get drug into this. The education benefits/programs have changed a lot over the years. I had a POS called VEAP that you had to pay $2700. into, so I have nothing.

Emveach - I think you would be smart to take the ASVAB and find out what each of the services has to offer. If you have any questions about the Navy, I'll try to answer them.

Pretty ironic that everyone doubts that I've been in the Navy. One of the guys that used to work with me looks like a Vietnam vet but haven't served a single day in the service. What do I have to do to prove that I'm a vet? Tatoo my DD-214 on my forhead?

Very true...it really does make it a lot easier if you're in pretty decent shape...but don't be boastful about your good shape lest you become the platoon's whipping boy...I made it a point to look like I was trying very hard when I was tearing apart the physical portions...

Hell, if you're in decent shape and at least halfway intelligent, then BCT will be a cakewalk for you--nothing more than a means to an end. As I'm probably one of the least recently removed from basic training (finished Aug 2000) , feel free to PM me if you've got any more-detailed questions. I'm happy to share stories :)

[Edit] How the hell did this turn into a way off topic discussion about war?
