UPDATE
We had called the company that we ordered the television from, and they said they sent out another television, and that UPS will send the one that looks beat up back to them. So fast forward to today........

I got a call from my mother today. Turns out, UPS re-delivered the original television; IN THE SAME BOX. The box was broken open, taped up and redelivered. It was left at the door when no one was home. Additionally, there is less packing material in the box than there was before. Basically, you can shake the box, and feel the television moving from side to side. She called back the company who we ordered the television from, and they said that they apologize that this happened, and that they are embarrassed that UPS did what they did. They will be taking care of us, and will be giving UPS hell....

LAST WEEK
So we ordered a color TV from an online retailer. The package was supposed to be delivered on Monday afternoon. Monday came, and no package. So Tuesday afternoon, my mother gets ready to leave the house, and guess what is sitting on the front step.....the package. This shows that they never even knocked on the door.

She brought it inside, and one noticed of the sides of the box was completely torn open. You could actually see the contents in the box just by looking at the box. Additionally, the screen was exposed (looks like there was no stirofoam in the box). So my mother calls me, and I tell her to 1) Not open the box, and 2) Call UPS. UPS tells her to open the box, which she refuses. They say that they would want her to open the box, because if the TV works, then there is no problem. Considering that the box was beat to hell, if we were to open it, UPS could always say we destroyed the box.

So after about 15 minutes of arging with UPS, they said that my mom should bring the package to a UPS office in Hialeah, Florida, which is like 45 miles away. She refused. After more arguing, UPS they agreed to come pick up the box. They said they would come to pick it up between 9 and 6 on Thursday. My mother asked if they could give her a more approximate time, since she did not want to stay home all day waiting for them to pick up the package. The UPS representative said to just leave it on the doorstep. My mother then told them that if she does that, it will be stolen. UPS asks why it would be stolen, and my mother said "The box says 27 INCH TELEVISION. If it is just sitting at the front door in plain view, with no cars in the driveway, don't you think someone might just take it?"

They finally came to pick it up at 10AM on Thursday, and are "investigating the issue"

UPS is usually very careful with my packages.

Though most of them are guns and ammo so maybe that has something to do with it.

Wow, that's pretty crap of them.

I like how they wanted her to open the box so they could collect on shipment again.

Last time I ordered Ammo from Cabelas, the box it came in was beat to hell. It even has the big bright sticker that says Live Ammo on it.

who did you buy the TV from if there was no styrofoam in the box? I've bought monitors online and they were always shipped with proper packaging. UPS and fedex will always beat up a box and they have strict packing standards for their packages.

It came from Best Buy. It almost looks like that the box was opened before arriving at my door, since there was styrofoam on the side that was not broken (I put my hand in there to check for it), but it was gone on that one side. I think that someone maybe opened it, and then repacked it (or at least tried to)

i'm really thinking about trying to get a job at ups or fedex but...

i'm so fvcking sick of the shipping companies.... i bought a 6800 off the forums last week. guy ships it priority(2-3 day) although i have ALWAYS received priority pacakges on the 4th day(which is fine). a week later it's still not here. still in transit going by the DC number. thank god he got it insured.

I just get this image in my head of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective's opening scene with Jim Carrey lining up a field goal kick with a box of something very broken.

That really sucks, I hope that UPS compensates.

I will never use UPS. Fed Ex is still ok in my books. But I prefer purolator or Canada post or USPS if from the states.

At work we get all our stuff via UPS from CDW and HP and never have a problem with broken boxes. the worst thing is the driver lets anyone sign for the package and sometimes things like dual layer DVD writers for the IT department get "lost".

You have to package your crap like it's going to be parachuted into combat and you are OK.

just fyi: last month, UPS broke some of my packages in transit also. you MUST contact the shipper (the retailer) and tell them that the package was destroyed because UPS WILL GIVE THEM THE MONEY TO REIMBURSE THE PACKAGE (if it was insured), NOT YOU!!! (you have no idea how much i want to emphasize this fact.)

and i'd follow up very carefully (check the tracking info regularly) on the status of the package. they are notorious for not doing this stuff in a timely manner, and chances are, you are not going to hear about it anymore -- even if you bug them, which i did, they'll say "it's in the shipper's hands now and you're going to have to deal with them."

by the way, how the hell is orlando 45 miles away from hialeah? where do you really live?

UPS loading staff have a policy of using packages as stepladders, especially ones that look expensive.

Firearms and ammunition, when marked as such, are handled by more mature personnel to keep the n00bs from killing themselves

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that.. I too am wondering if we really need to distinguish between "TV" and "Color TV" here in 2005.

UPS has gone from ok to sh1t in the past several years. They now charge extra for signature confirmation (or @ least they do here in FL) and they never knock or anything just leave the package there. I'm lucky, when I order stuff in my dorm the people upfront sign for it and pick it up so it's at least in a safe location. Freaking UPS that's why I ship all my stuff via USPS if it's small and big stuff via DHL, it's alot cheaper too.

Good on your mom for sticking to her guns. Yeah, I would contact Best Buy about the issue. Make SURE they know that the TV hasn't been received by you yet, but rather that UPS is investigating.
