Hy im wondering if it would be a wise ideea to make this purchase ?

My cpu is getting kinda old and its showing more and more recently since ive purchased a radeon 7870,im seeing low performance in games like BF 3,especially on large 64 man matches.

Ive been reading up on the FX lineup and im kinda scared to do it,since many say its pretty decent for games, especially for BF 3,others say its worse than the Deneb.

What do you guys suggest ?

Im interested in this particular FX mainly for the price, since its dirt cheap where i live, another option would be to save up on cash and do a Intel switch but i dont really want to do that since i got a new AM3+ mobo not to long ago .

Any advice is greatly apreciated :)

Edit: I have to point out that i have a 95W mobo,so im kinda limited in options.

In BF3 FX does pretty well :). Yes,even the FX6xxx series . It does reasonably well in other games, maybe its weakest point is in some RTS titles with massive amount of units on screen . Good thing is that that six core part OCs fairly well so you can squeeze a bit more out of it that way. From 925 though,it will be a big uprgade(925 is 2.8Ghz QC IIRC). Are you sure your board supports it?

Yeah, my mobo is an ASUS Am3+, it supports all the 95W FX processors, but i can't find a 95W fx 8120 anywhere in the country.

You know i was thinking since my phenom wasnt that particularly good even when launched,i was thinking that for me this FX would be a beefy upgrade.

In terms of OC,i was dissapointed with it also, its a C2 stepping,so i can run it at 3.5 GHZ with going over 1.4V on the core,i have it stable at 3.2 without a Vcore bump, but it doesnt OC pretty well.

Have you tried to overclock the NB? Getting 2.6Ghz-3.0Ghz will make difference.

Ive followed Dolk's guide to overclock it,i don't know, i didn't find any considerable difference in bumping my NB speeds.

The chip doesnt want to go over 3.5 without uping the voltages a considerable ammount.

I hear ya. I do 1.4v @ 4.0Ghz and it tops out a 48C full load. I can do 4.2, but I gotta ramp up the voltages too high and then heat becomes the real issue. You may want to wait for Pile Driver or haswell? Depends on how much money you want to spend right now. I am waiting, this Phenom is fine for now.

BF3 multiplayer on large maps/players will take advantage of the more numerous cores to the advantage of the FX.
The downside is the high heat/power that the FX produces when oc'ing which is something you have to take into account. If your mb can't support 125W cpus I'd be reconsidering oc'ing.

Well, anyway i realized its foolish to buy it just before a new gen comes out,its not like it would dissapear of the shelfs even when PD comes, maybe it will go even lower at the price.

95W Mobo is *sigh* for AMD.

I'd honestly try to sell the kit and kaboodle, build something with an 1155 mobo + i3 21xx. After selling the existing stuff, you should be out $150 or less, and have a much better platform to build from.

You could wait for PD first though, it's not like a PhII X4 is terrible right now.

I don't know man,i dont wanna go back to dual cores no matter how much FPS they give me.

And also found some russian site that does some serious benchies for alot of games, and one struck me ,since i play alot of BF 3

In sleeping dogs wich i also play

Both games are cpu hungry, especially Close quarters....i don't know what upgrade i would get from that i3 in the long run.

If you thing that newer games will benefit from the FX6100 over Phenom 925 then get it but personally i wouldn't upgrade keeping that motherboard.

A new mobo sounds like an imperative for higher end gaming with a better CPU. I suggest waiting for Piledriver and/or Haswell. If nothing, at least the prices will drop on the current products.

An i5 is always an option if you are willing to spend a little bit of extra cash for near-perfect performance, even in strategies.

I'm in a similar spot want to build a Guild Wars 2 PC for the other half but money is tight. Can't decide if I should go and 6100 (I live near a microcenter) for about $130 with motherboard or an i3 2100 for apx $170 with motherboard or go for the i5 3450 for about $230 with motherboard.

I go back and forth on which is a better value, but right now I figure if you don't already have a beefy power supply and a good cooler, don't get a Bulldozer chip. If you do, they may be a better value.

Ivy Bridge i3's are out and on newegg now, offering slightly higher clocks and IPC, as well as lower power consumption than their Sandy Bridge counterparts. If you can afford the i5 it's an amazing chip, and you can increase the non-K models by 400mhz (and probably undervolt at those clocks).

You dont have to be Einstein to figure out that if you are on a low budget the FX6100 at $130.00 is the better choice for gaming.

Against the Core i3 you can put that extra 40 bucks to a high performance Heat-sink+ fan for Overclocking and have a better performing CPU or spend it for a better GPU.

Against the Core i5 you can spend the extra 100 bucks to a better GPU and still have better performance in Games with higher Image Quality.

honestly I'm more concerned about the video card not being good enough. OP you should be able to OC the CPU to 3.5ghz, and the CPU-NB to 2.4-6ghz, at which point you'd be solidly in 40fps+ territory all the time in BF3.

edit: oh so you can get to 3.5ghz. 1.4v and 3.5ghz is perfectly fine for AMD, no need to worry.
From there if you can OC the CPU-NB to 2.6ghz you'll get another 15% performance.
I have a feeling your 7870 is what is holding you back:

edit: oh, maybe not...hm...anyone else want to chime in? I'm pretty sure at 3.5ghz and 2.6ghz CPUNB his CPU would be plenty fast for BF3

Well i bought the damn thing, managed to get another 10% off at a local store, couldnt pass up.

Now i have a problem with this thing

It seems to be underclocking itself even tough i disabled CnQ in my bios,i disabled turbo core thing too.

Is this a standard thing ?

Cpuz is showing me its behaving like CNQ is on,going thru different multis depending of the load.

Btw are there some essential things i should enable or disable for this thing ?

I heard about a MS patch but can't find it.

How about turbo core ? On or OFF ?

Thanks

How is an FX-6100 $40 cheaper than an i3 setup?

You don't need a z77 chipset with an i3 because you can't overclock anyway, and an i3 itself is ~$130.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116775

Since you can't overclock anyway you can go with the stock HS+Fan and a smaller PSU, and dump that extra money into a better GPU.

EDIT: I'm not arguing that an i3 is a better CPU than an FX-6xxx all things considered, but that it's not more expensive and that it IS competitive with an overclocked FX-6 in games.
