My friend bought a Tbird 900 along with a Abit KT7 mobo.Since his cabinet is delayed, we thought we could assemble the mobo on my DELL P2 400 mhz.We dis-assembled everything from my comp and proceeded to attach the power cable to the mobo.

As soon as we did, even with the power off , we heard a high pitch whine from the mobo. I am not sure where excatly from the mobo the sound came from. We had not even installed any of the components yet. We are not able to get the power going even on flicking the switch.(the case fan doesn't spin)

But the problem disappers as soon as I connenct my old mobo. This mobo is smaller than the Abit.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is and what mistake I am doing? Also is there anyone out there who has upgraded to a AMD chip using the same cabinet? Do you think I might have damaged the motherboard and CPU?

Thanks in advance,
Harsha

Dell probably use a differnet type of Power supply. I've heard that whine noise before but from the powersupply! The Dell power supply might also to week.

well i have a dell p3 450 and i know that the power supply is different, it has an extra m/b plug to provide more voltage to the board, i know that you can unplug it with no negative effect though, but they generally aint too weak cuz i am draining mine and it runs pretty stable......i am assuming you mean case when saying cabinet, but i know that i catn get any other motherboards into my dell case without modding it cuz they dont have the standard screw and standoff placings. Did you have the power cable plugged inot the back of the Dell when you were putting stuff in it? try running a wire from the green wire to any black ground (on the atx connector) and if the p/s and case fan doesnt start up then your power supply is fried, if it does power up, then its your board thats screwed i would assume

I tried the same thing with a mates PII-266 Dimension case - however, I noticed that the PS is only 200w....this most likely means it is simply not powerful enough to run a TBird. I was also not sure about the pinouts on the ATX connector, as the colouring of the wires is very different to a standard ATX supply. The extra two connectors, btw, are starting to reappear on modern powersupplys as part of the 2.03 (i think) ATX specification (my Enermax 330w has them too).

cheers
