No 'special' cable needed.

Just use what you had hooked up to your CD Burner or even add it as the primary or secondary drive if you have two plugins.

So, I just got my DVD drive in the mail today. Mine came with no cables to connect it with. Is this the same with everybody else, or did I get jobbed? Thanks.

Because it's OEM. In general, OEM storage device (ODD and HDD) doesn't include any cable.

Thanks, is there a special type of cable I need to get? I probably can't just use the one from my old CD Burner, right?
You can find the "Quickstart Guide" for the NEC 3500A drive here: LINK

I've burned about 10 DVDs so far w/ no coasters. 5 @ 4x on the discs from NE and 5 Ridata 8x disks. The 8x burning still takes about 11 1/2 minutes to finish w/ either Nero or DVDDecrypter.

I've been debating between the DVR-108, ND3500 and the LG 4160B.. but it seems that the NEC comes out on top in terms of features in the end.

Just a heads up.

Just a note to clear up a couple of thing, neither the pioneer or the NEC 16x drives support bit-setting for DVD+R, but both support bit-setting for the dual layer format, but there is some "hacked" firmware available that will add bit-setting support for DVD+R to the NEC drive, but unless you own a old DVD player or plan on backing up console games you wouldn't need bit-setting.

please explain why you need bit-setting for backing up games? i am not now, but i may be in the future!

Can DVDDecrypter be used to burn DL, or is there any special software needed to burn DL?

I'm interested in lowest cost possible to make a legal copy of a dual-layer movie.
What all do I need to add software-wise if I buy an OEM dual-layer drive?
You need a copy of DVD Shrink, along with DVD Decrypter. You can read a "how to" DVD Shrink Guide here:
DVD Shrink Guide

For about $7 when you buy it from Newegg you can get the Roxio Easy Media Creator Basic DVD software.

Here's some Nero Suite 6.0.0.6 (OEM) w/ Dual Layer Drive Support $3.99 shipped
Link to software
I don't know if this software is any good or not, but for $4......

Has anyone tried to order Nero from softwareandstuff? Do they actually check whether you've bought hardware?

You can only get Roxio if it's packaged with the drive you want, right? I don't think the offer it as a separate item to be purchased with whatever drive you want.

Ok, for some reason, whenever I try to burn with Nero, it only writes an image to my hard drive. I can't get it to burn for some reason. I had no problem with my CD burner, but now that the DVD is installed, it won't work. What am I missing? Thanks

It's possible that your version of Nero doesn't support/recognize the NEC 3500A drive. What version of Nero are you using?

Marcello....if you are using multible drives ,you have to check which drive you want to use.If you installed a virtual drive when you installed the software maybe it is defaulting to that drive for burning

I'm using Nero 5.5.10.35 Enterprise Edition. I only have one drive installed right now, and I'm pretty sure it's selected.

when you go to choose recorder, does it show up? It sounds like your version of nero doesn't fully support the NEC drive and it's defaulting to the image recorder.

I just ordered the 3500A in black from Newegg, only $70.99. For that price it's practically a steal, especially when you consider that 8x drives were barely below $100 less than six months ago. :D

I just bought this and using the free DVD-R from Newegg, I could only burn at 6x which took about 30 mins.

Am I doing something wrong? I burned about 4.1Gigs of pictures using Windows to burn the DVD-R.
