From the current test, it seems like both drivers are very competitive to each other (they should, because they share the same chipset). But Pionner seems a bit better to me and the price is lower as well. I can finally upgrade from my Pioneer 104.

Why would you want to jump on 16 x when high speed media is so expensive? 8 x is good enough for me as i usually buy the 4x riteks

Isn't "dual layer" the attractive feature here?

Am I out of touch with dvd burner technology? :D

I was going to buy the pioneer 108 a while back but i heard the NEC 3500A uses a different writing method and that it will burn more reliable/ faster than the pioneer. I forgot exactly what was said and i can't find the old post. If someone could shed some light on this i would apppreciate it.

there are 8x dual layers out there. You can even flash oem / retail 8x's to dual layer... depending on the brand of course. Anyway my point is the cost of media though. How cheap is dual layer?

Besides DL, not everyone already has an 8x or 12x burner. I'm at 4x myself, and I'd rather spend a bit more to jump to 16x than go to 8x. I'll stick to burning 4x media at 8x, or 8x media at 12x or 16x until the more expensive media drops in price. I'd rather make the one purchase now which should last longer than if I went out and jumped to 8x.

I saw DL media on Newegg this morning for $11 a disc + shipping.

I'll be shrinking my data untill it drops to around $2 a pop personally.

Actually the Pioneer right now burns more reliably, that is why it is just a tad bit slower.

This version includes SW. Once the OEM versions hit newegg (in about a week or 2), they should be around $20 cheaper.

This is faster for CD-R burns by far but the Pioneer beats it in CD-RW...which is a moot point since you can't rightly find 32x CD-RW media anyway (24x is the highest I've seen).

Supposedly the Pioneer has problems with SD2 backups, but that's becoming less and less of an issue.

Wow very exciting - $5 cheaper than I've seen the 108 anywhere, mind you it's $4 shipping, plus tax in CA = $99.25 with the 5 free RitekG04's.

DVD drives fall in price so quickly (the 2510 for example) that this will be about $80 shipped as soon as more retailers get them - so far only two places have stock in the US.

I'm waiting a month, then the media will be cheaper too, also 16x DVD-R should be released.

More than 99 of the beige in stock at Newegg. This must have just hit because I checked it this afternoon and it wasn't there. Wait 2 weeks, they'll be cheap.
