Hey, this deal worked great for me at a BB in NJ. 512 of Kingston 2700 is on sale for $55, after install cost it's still less than $90 so I got it for free. The biggest problem was getting the Geek Squad to allow me to prepay for an install. Here's the link to the RAM:

Linky

I called the Muncie, IN store(sorry don't know the store #) and asked to speak to a manager. I explained the coupon so I wouldn't waist gas on a half hour drive for nothing. They said if the coupon has an expiration date, Best Buy logo, and coupon number then most likely it is legit.
I thought cool this is gonna work. Wrong! Got there picked up the ram and took it to the geek squad counter and said I'd like to have this installed. Showed them the coupon and they scanned it and then told me to hold for a sec they'd have to ask a manager.
Long story short the manager called someone(no clue who) and came back and told me someone hacked BB and altered the coupon therefore they could not and would not honor it unless I purchased a new laptop from them.

oh well it was only a waste of $10 in gas. My luck is always bad with these sort of things. I really could of used it to..my Dell 4150 is sloooow with only 256MB ram.

phatTweaker,

It should be a crime to sell a WinXP computer with less than 512mb of RAM. I got that "Not the whole coupon" crap also. Printout the URL for the pdf to show them. It's their site! Their misprint, they have to honor it.

Insomniak,

Do people really buy this ram at the full $119.99 price? If so then BB can afford to give away a few thousand sticks! Also, lots of retailers have "loss leader" sales to get people in to the stores so they will buy other stuff. I bought a usb tablet/pen and a dvd, so it wasn't a zero total.

went to 4 stores between tacoma, puyallup, federal way and tuckwilla

lots of stock of the desktop ram -- which is what I went for -- and NO issues getting it.
I made a token purchase (for later return) to keep from drawing attention.

Left the store with nothing but "Thanks for shopping at best buy"
Oh... and the RAM! 😛

Thanks OP!

Total spent:
$20 for the one stick I bought 2 weeks ago (suckered into paying for Install)
$5 dinner out
~$12 in gas

4.5GB and dinner for $37

...and I officially wipe the slate clean for the rebates BB has denied in the past

Best Buy honoring the coupon when it's obviously a mistake, makes Best Buy all right by me.

Regarding pricing practices in BB, I'm not really at liberty to talk about it due to company policy in regard to handling proprietary information. That's considered confidential information of Best Buy, and I'm not allowed to disclose or discuss it with other parties.

I'll just say that I am very familiar with the retail business, and very familiar with the loss leader mechanic. Best Buy, while different in many aspects, does share some similarities with other retail outlets, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if there were loss leading sales or markup on certain items.

I tried another store today and got an stubborn manager that wouldn't budge on giving me the memory. He mentioned also that someone with the same coupon had come in the other day and tried to use it.

Anyone mind picking one up for me, i'll gladly pay shipping costs.

I should try this. What kind of brings me down though is that Gilligansdingy already went to the store I would go to. The Novi store, which I used to work at, and guess what, I worked for Jason Cox, and his last name is very close to his personality.

It doesn't surprise me that the man that would sell his own grandma on a $200 PSP for a $5 mouse would say stuff like that.

Might try anyway though, and come armed with the info you provided.

So thanks!

I called up 1888BestBuy and the first person I got was some lady that said that the coupon was meant to be used in conjunction with a PC purchase. I hung up, called back, and got someone different. This guy was more helpful, he told me the best he could do is send an email to the store where my coupon was getting refused and that they should then let me use the coupon there. He said he was going to include my name in it as well (so hopefully I won't be hassled again).

But one thing he did say is, I have to spend at least $90 when I'm there to use it. Which is fair enough, the memory + install is only $85. We'll see how things go tonight, as the coupon expires tomorrow.

This is actually not a valid coupon, and we are not honoring it in my store. Reason would be this - The coupon was originally an online printable coupon (sent via e-mail to select customers in select markets) with the explicit statement that a computer bundle or notebook must be purchased alongside it, as well as Geek Squad install services must be purchased with it. This text is mysteriously missing from the largely circulated version...word around the campfire is that it was digitally altered and web-spread before the corporate office caught on to what was going on, but the official line I'm hearing is that it was a misprint or something, never meant for public distribution.

Anyway, it's null and more and more Best Buys should be refusing to honor it.

This is what I have been told anyway. I am not sure how accurate or inaccurate it is.

Before you all get up in arms, I do have a few things to say. Firstly, I don't know why everyone is so hot to screw Best Buy over, or what this grudge is against them, but they are not a bad company. They treat their employees really well (at least at my store) and offer a lot of nice perks and incentives simply for doing your job well....I mean perks people care about, not an "Employee of the Month" certificate. They cut checks, they give gift cards, they hook you up with gift certificates. Stuff you want.

Secondly, don't be surprised if they refuse to honor this (bogus) coupon or are against giving you stuff for free. They are a business. They are in business to make money. Giving away merchandise does not lend itself to that end. Those of you surprised at this fact need to go get re-educated on free market capitalism. I really don't see the qualm you all have with actually paying for merchandise. Most of you are gainfully employed, yes?

Anyway, that's the "inside scoop", so have at.

BB employees and managers are grade A LIARS, and Con artists, I am not doing anything illegal nor lying,
Explain this to me Mr.BB, why do these managers even give a SH!T if somone walks out with free ram ? I mean the company gave that a green light and the managers aren't paying for that at all.

Linux... give it a rest already. Plenty of people got in on it, plenty of people abused it. There's a reason why there's two retail electronics stores have names of CrapUSSR and BeastBuy/WorstBuy.

well went in at lunch and got a stick of 512 for my desktop, install, and a laptop case for a 17" notebook for a total 42 bucks

i too work at best buy and if you check employee toolkit and go to the retail insider for geek squad for around the date when the coupon first came out it says that we are supposed to honor the coupon, there was a misprint in that it was supposed to be for non-sale items but since it was a misprint and best buy's fault that we should honor it if the customer demands it. your manager was feeding you BS, there is no way someone could digitally alter a coupon ON BEST BUY'S WEBSITE.

and to those (dumb) people wondering why best buy managers don't want to honor it, its because this cuts into margin and therefore their bonuses.

I just went to get it today, what did I get? same old fradulent coupon lies. Called up Corporate, they called their store manager and told him to accept it and wham went over and picked up 2 sticks. The dude was upset, kept making it seem like we are all thieves and we are "getting away with it"

So I got my 2 sticks worth, not going to push my luck any further though...

What number did you call for corporate? I'm having problems with them accepting the coupon. They keep saying it's not good on "advertised items."

Edit: I just called 1888BestBuy and "Tom" told me that they cannot send any emails to any stores unless i received the email from best buy that had the coupon.

Just came back from Best Buy. I too got into an argument with the Manager. Just when I was about to walk out on him, he called me back. He said that he will give me the memory (which according to BB's website is "Not Available") for $24.99. I didn't want to make calls and waste my time so took the deal. Not bad for a 512MB stick @ $26.87 after taxes. Thanks OP for sharing this!!!

I 'threatened' the manager, saying "I'll call up his corporate offices and make him honor the coupon. I guess that worked for me. You still have until the end of tomorrow 🙂

I had a little different experience, I asked before I used the coupon, they said it was good. They made me use geek squad to install the memory. They thougth that they had me there, well wrong, I had my laptop in the car. So I let them install it. Then they rang it up and told me that I could only use the coupon for one stick of ram. So out the door for 60.00. I am not complaining. 60.00 for 1gig of notebook ram. I am going to take my desktop over tomorrow and get a 512 stick for it, if I only get one stick (all I need) it should be free. We will see.
Of course the Geek squad "installer" opened my laptop and then gave me a stupid look "there are not any free slots for the memory" me "take out the 2 sticks of 256 and then put the 512 sticks in" Oh. Then he put the lid back on and spun the screw driver wrong way for what seemed like forever before he decided to turn it the other way to get the screws to tighten up.
At least he did not screw anything up!

Called the same number, used 3-4-2 for my options, got some woman, I told her I went into Best Buy and they refused me, etc. She asked which Best Buy it was and called the Store Manager up telling him to accept it.
