The only idiot in this thread is you. Yes, I've eaten a hamburger and driven and the hamburger did not impair me one bit. Seriously, you cannot eat and drive? A hamburger? No one is asking you to drink soup with chopsticks. And there are plenty of things that can distract someone in a car. Taking a burger or fries or soda and directing it to your mouth is a distraction, but nowhere near critical. It isn't distracting like a phone where you HAVE to take your eyes off the road.

Shit, when did common sense and personal responsibility become the purview of the government? I can't believe we're having this argument. Sad.

There is a lot more to it than just directing it to your mouth. You have to take it out of the bag, unwrap it, pick it up and hold it just right.

I Do it all the time, how is it any different than taking a sip from my coffee mug in the morning while driving?

you just suck at driving?

I see nothing wrong with this. I wish more people were ticketed for distracted driving. I still see tons of people with cell phones to their ears while driving and it's been illegal here for a while.

IMHO, the ability to eat a complete fast food meal in traffic, including opening the ketchup packets, should be part of the driving exam. The exam should reflect real world reality, really.

Way back in the 70s when my sister moved to NC, her sargent warned the new recruits that NC issued tickets for drinking coke while driving.

I totally agree with the officer AND the law.

Forget about texting and cell phones, I have had my closest calls with death while messing with eating my fast food before it gets cold.
Especially Wendy's French fries.

I could see my headstone, "KILLED BY A WENDY'S FRENCH FRY, YET NOT ONE MADE IT INTO HIS MOUTH".

Lets face it, after leaving that drive-thru window, you just can't wait to start munching down.
And to think... "mild sauce, please" may be your very last words spoken on this earth.

Really? Are we really having a conversation about the science of eating a hamburger? Ok. Let me tell you how to do it without killing anyone.

1. While parked, unwrap the burger.

2. Take a large bite out of the burger.

3. Return the burger to a pre-determined location.

4. Put car in drive.

5. Pick up the burger, but don't look this time. If you can't reach it, it's ok. It's still in the fucking car. Wait. Got it? Ah, good. Return to step 2.

He didn't get pulled over for the hamburger. He was likely swerving around.

Like I said a couple weeks ago. We all commit crimes daily. It is only a matter of the police deciding to enforce those broken laws.

"Maybe I was enjoying the burger too much. I needed to tone it down,” driver Madison Turner told the station.

Isn't that the fun mental image... guy going "cookie monster" on his burger, bits and sauce flying everywhere...

Oh ya, because everyone get our burger out while we are parked and then start driving while we are eating.

Not finding any outrage here. Distracted driving kills more than drunk driving. Driving without a seatbelt only harms the passenger, while distracted drivers are a menace to society at large. Every single DUI should face potential incrimination.
Talking to passengers constitutes "distracted driving," too. If a cop pulled you over because he observed you talking to your passenger, would that upset you?

So I guess I should stop reading the morning paper while I drive to work.

How do you know??

1.) Cops pulls over man because he sees him through his window eating a cheeseburger.

2.) Man gets pulled over for swerving around and the cause is him eating, gets a ticket.

#2 has a much higher probability while #1 is a better headline. See it all the time in "news" articles.

Have you eaten a hamburger? You actually believe that you can keep most of your attention on the road, with little to no slowing in reaction time, while eating a hamburger? If you really think that, you're an idiot. Distractions cause accidents, be it hamburgers or cell phones. If you are so hungry you can't wait to get home to eat, park the fucking car and stuff your face. If you'd rather run down a kid because you had ketchup drip down and took your eyes off the road, do it somewhere else.

Let's see, I've eaten burgers behind the wheel, I've eaten burritos, candy, drinking coffee, yea, etc, etc, heck, ive used my legs to steer on occasion. The amount of brainpower needed to direct things to your mouth is quite negligible, unless you really suck at any form of multi tasking.

I'd say driving while tired is many times more dangerous that distracted driving.

Between this and the sharing a coke thread I've concluded that a subset of the members of this forum have a California Redwood firmly lodged in their rectum.

Eating at the wheel doubles accident rates

"New research shows that drivers are nearly twice as likely to be taken by surprise if a pedestrian walks in front of their car when they are snacking at the wheel."

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...-the-wheel-doubles-accident-rates-456433.html

Eating While Driving Riskier Than Being Legally Impaired By Alcohol Or Texting

"
According to a study by the University of Leeds called “Two Hands Better than One,” this is exactly what researchers found based on observation of test subjects operating driving simulators.

The UK researchers measured reaction time while drivers negotiated virtual vehicles, and as it turns out, eating increased response times by 44 percent.

In contrast, texting increased reaction time by 37 percent, and drinking a non-alcoholic beverage from a can or bottle increased reaction time by 22 percent.

And what about the one driving no-no that that nearly everyone agrees is undesirable – drinking alcohol and operating a vehicle?

Drivers asked to operate the simulator who were at the U.S. “legal limit” of .08 percent blood alcohol content increased reaction time by 12.5 percent."

http://www.hybridcars.com/eating-while-driving-riskier-being-legally-impaired-or-texting-45569/

New research shows a pedestrian is 2x as likely to be struck by a car if they walk out in front of one.

Honestly I was thinking he was doing something a bit more obscene during his 'enjoyment'

Distracted driving can mean anything. If this particular guy was not driving well while eating the cheeseburger, then so be it.

Outrage not found.

Pull over and eat your fucking meal instead of trying to multitask.

No really, I am impressed you can eat, prep your taxes and carve 19th century Rococo sculptures while driving - but, don't.

Confirmed we have at least two terrible drivers in this thread.

Although, I do agree being tired is worse, but what does that have to do with being distracted?
