sometimes, it isn't how good you are, it's who you know to get you the jobs.

But he already had his whole body in the door, let alone his foot.... this is an issue of the internal people seeing his work, and not thinking he was fit for the position, unless he did something to piss someone off...

I really think it's just the one guy. AFAIK everyone else on the team really wants me to take this. I've been doing my boss'es job for months now just fine... I'm already aclimated to the climate... I just wonder if I didn't get a fair shake.

Because you didn't go after it.

Just trying to help you. Next time it will be different.

Well is the position still open?

Call whoever you need to call, setup a meeting, let it known that you want that position.

Nothing bad can come from that action - just shows you want to move up. Always a good move even if you don't get the position.

Welcome to government jobs. I worked for the local university for a year, and it was the most ridiculous work experience I've ever had. I got laid off, and 2 weeks later was hired into a private corporation making $20,000 more with far superior benefits. The usual rules don't seem to apply in those places... I'll never go back! Best of luck to you... :)

It is always the case, always. I applied for a job having all hte qualifications, it was even the job I had just worked in as a co-op (lowly help-desk), they all loved me, even my boss. But, the new boss came in and had a nephew that wanted the job. All the internals got passed over, all the ex-coops, denied, some noob nephew got it. So lame, just because the boss man pulls rank...BS

I feel for you man, but at least you can still get overpaid and underworked and not have to feel guilty for it.

Umm, I think they have to interview all applicants, then they just don't have to hire you.

Go to your Union rep, or go far above that guy's head and complain formally. And complain to the guy who screwed you over and save all your corespondence.

I think you should do that. My last job was a gov't job. My application came in after the deadline, only because I recently moved there. They weren't thrilled with the candidates, so they met with me the day after I turned in my resume. They extended the interview process for one day, then hired me the next. I was lucky and my ex-wife knew people who worked there, so that helped. Had I not gone after it, I wouldn't have gotten it.

Look for a new job, you'll find one eventually. When you do find one, don't give them a notice, just walk into the boss's office and politely say, "Hi, I found a new job. Go fvck yourself. That is all."

*edit: Also, on your last day, don't forget to wear your "1337" t-shirt. :)

Hmm, note to self: If I ever gun for a promotion I should let every higher up in the place know I'm looking for the position. Then I should keep checking with them to let them know I'm still interested. :/

Tell them to fvck themselves and then leave?

Ever since I left my corperate job for this job beacause of downsizing, I've been getting less than 50% of my old income. Money keeps getting tighter and tighter. I eat out only when my gf browbeats me into it and I skip meals. My rainy day fund will finally be exhausted by october :(

You know, when I first read that, I seriously read it as "gf blowjobs me". Seriously. That is what my mind was saying and I had to do a doubletake...

I'm sure it will go to the most qualified candidate. HR over there is probably extremely strict. I hope it's you, and good luck! Just don't jump the gun, and let the process carry out.

So they figured out that you'll keep doing your job and your ex-boss's job for the same price.

Time to stop doing someone else's work.
