Pretty stupid whacky way of looking at things. How do you explain this? 😀

Haha, not sure, but I'd guess he would say

Hatch
Wagon
Wagon

homercles337, care to comment on how the above cars fall into the hatch or wagon category?

hatch
hatch
wagon.

the difference is the distance between the rear door and the rear opening. thats it.

Yup. Hatches are typically shorter than their sedan counterpart. Wagons are typically longer with the extra length coming aft of the rear wheels.

Say what? You don't like hot hatches? :Q:Q

This car is the same weight as a GTI with 63 more HP and 73 more lb-ft of torque

Hot hatches are by definition not sedans.

I'm not sure I understand your point...

That car is a sedan/wagon, not a hatch. Look in my sig for a hatch.

WTF dude. What do you call this?

http://www.germancarfans.com/news/2060721.001/2060721.001.mini3L.jpg

and this:

http://www.germancarfans.com/photos/3030909.001/1051big.jpg

I call those Brazilian (and/or perhaps Australian) and last i checked were never production vehicles. Your point? If you want to play this game, let me ask you if you have ever seen a Jetta Coupe? How about a JTi? I have. Does that mean i classify all jettas as coupes? Nope. If you want to call wagons "hot hatches" be my guest, just know that i laugh in your face while others laugh secretly behind your back.

I'm not laughing.

Not to say that this is conclusive (nor that I care about either side in this silly argument), but here are what different websites call the non-sedan Mazda3

Hatchback
KBB.com
CarsDirect.com

Wagon
AutoTrader.com
Edmunds.com
cars.yahoo.com
Ford.com
NadaGuides.com

Other
MazdaUSA.com (5-door)

These are production cars. The 5-door GTI is sold in Europe NOW and comes here to the US next year and the R32 5-door is sold in Europe NOW. You wanna see the R32 in real life? Here:

http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10

Give it up. Regardless, I'm tired of wasting my breath

The 5 door GTI is available in the US right now (although in very limited quantities).

this car is going to be awesome...i just hope that its not filled with spoiled 16 year old idiots who enjoy wrapping these around tree's and think the fast and the furious lifestyle is "the sh!z yo!"

Clearly the hottest hatch at the moment. Ah, but the 2008 WRX is going to come in a hatch form with (or so it is rumored) 330 bhp.

regarding the MS3, i worry about the reliability of the engine, but it does sound like a seriously fun car with a good dose of practicality. if we're lucky, it will end up heavily discounted like the MS6. damn, i must say i'm tempted.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatchback

A hatchback car is an automobile design, consisting of a passenger cabin which includes an integrated cargo space, accessed from behind by a "hatch" tailgate or flip-up window. Most hatchbacks are distinguished from station wagons by not having separate side windows over the load area. Hatchbacks are also often described as three-door (two entry doors and the hatch) or five-door (four entry doors and the hatch) cars. In Europe, city cars, superminis, and small family cars are usually hatchbacks.

Why does that end the "theead"? I don't recall the original thread title being, "Hey guys, do you think the Mazda3 is a hatchback or a wagon?"

[manly voice] I'd rather have a miata with this engine then the mazda3.[/manly voice]

Seriously its like the caliber with a 300hp engine, wtf is the point? The mazda3 hatch and caliber are not sports cars, so why put these engines in them?

A go fast car with lots of utility, great handling and a bargain price?? The Mazda3s Hatch is already one of the best cars in its class...why not make it even better? You ever think of that? A MS3 can be used as a daily driver and can actually be used to transport stuff, ferry your friends around, run errands, etc and not have to worry about "packing lightly" when you need to go somewhere. The MS3 can be an all thing to everyone kind of vehicle.

The Miata is a two seat convertible. That right there limits its wide-spread appeal.

I'd cream my pants if I drove a car like that..
<- loves his miata.

They're aimed straight at the heart of the urban 20-something male. He wants something sportier than a bread basket, but still needs enough room to carry around cases of beer, and croquet sets and such.

The Mazda3 5-door and Caliber SRT-4 are a good compromise between the two.

Good points, cant argue with those. Maybe its just me that prefers cars that are built to suit a specific need rather then these wanna be sports cars.
Whats next, a 200hp honda fit, hemi powered caravan, nissan versa gtr?

Exactly how is 263 bhp wannabe? This is a "hot hatch" aka an import muscle car. Big engine, small body, cheap price. Such cars have a long history amongst actual car enthusiasts.
