basically what we already knew, but Apple just spelled it out more clearly during their press conference.

The Apple haters here will not be satisfied with anything less than Apple declaring bankruptcy or coming out and saying "errr, Android is the best thing ever!"

Yup.

Before press conference: "Apple NEEDS to give away free bumpers to save their ass."

After press conference: "What bullshit! Apple needs to admit there's a design flaw and recall the iPhone 4!"

What dumb fucks. I'm sorry.

You don't need to resort to lying. People were saying it was a design flaw from the very beginning. The very least Apple could do was give a bumper, they said. They should refund unhappy customers and/or issue a recall, they said. This was before the press conference. Don't make stuff up.

It looks to me like they covered all bases just short of admitting the flaw. They offer a free bumper/case but you can also just get your money back if that doesn't work. They are not going to recall over this.

Apple had more guts than I thought they would have. They basically came out and said, "This is some bullshit the media has exaggerated because everyone loves a little schadenfreude. We're not going to be dicks about it, so here's a free case. If that's not good enough, return the phone. Nobody is going to though."

Let's see if iPhones are returned in droves or if sales plummet. At the end of the day this is a story overblown by nerd rage. If the Xbox survived RRoD (where every unit made from 2005 - 2007 eventually crapped out) I think Apple is not going to have a problem with a few people in areas of bad reception holding it the wrong way.

Fantards were desperately wishing for the Achilles' heel of the iPhone juggernaut. This wasn't it, sorry guys.

You call that guts? lol. You know, one thing I've noticed with the mac faithful is their fear of Steve Jobs. Sad.

I think the problem is that people wanted Steve Jobs to fall to his knees and apologize.

Recall, free phones, free bumpers, $200 cash, 300lbs of pure gold, none of that would of made people happy unless Steve apologized.

Why is an apology from Steve important? Well people like to see companies that are successful see the face of embarrassment, especially Apple. Why especially Apple? Because people hate him for his smug "I'll tell you what you like" kind of draconian attitude.

Quite frankly, leave the personal attitudes towards the CEO at the door and either buy or not buy the damn device. Sheesh!

Fear of what? Show me a better phone and I'll by it. Full refund for the iPhone 4 if you have one and are not happy. Jobs should be scared of us, the consumers, not the other way around.

People want to believe that the iPhone sells only because Jobs has some kind of Obi-Wan hold over the industry. The iPhone sells because it's the best smartphone out there, period. It will continue to sell for the same reason. Returns will be minimal because of that as well.

This is where the rubber meets the road. I'm another who can't stand Jobs' attitude but I love Apple devices.

I love how people throw around the term "Best Smartphone".

Such a magical device doesn't exist, as it implies that it is unilaterally superior in every way.

iPhone 4: Best Smartphone for my Mom/Grandma
EVO: Best Smartphone on a Budget
Droid X: Best Smartphone in terms of Network Quality
Droid Inc: See Droid X but smaller
Droid: Best Smartphone for people who like HW Keyboards.

I would recommend the iPhone to a lot of people, but there are a lot of people who don't want it. My buddies sister was set on getting an iPhone, but after seeing my Evo and hearing how much it cost she changed her mind in about 5 minutes.

Also it's ridiculous to expect Apple to recall over this... if there's no safety issue there won't be a recall. The attenuation problem does exist with all phones, however it's exceptionally bad on the iPhone 4. Apple would have been better off (IMHO) just admitting to the problem and offering a solution. The videos of the the BB and HTC phones are just going to make people look more into the issue.

And as for whether this is a "design flaw", you're just going to run into the whole "It's not a bug it's a feature" argument from Apple. Apple did the right thing by offering free cases in the end so I don't see how anyone can be upset with them right now. I would hope they change their manufacturing process to remedy the issue in future hardware, but any consumer with half a brain should know about the issue by the time they stop giving out cases if they don't, so they'll have only themselves to blame.

And outselling ever single other smartphone by a huge margin.

Which is the point everyone is trying to make to the Apple Fanboys. The iPhone sells because of Apple's marketing, the Steve Jobs Effect, and the fact that its shiny. Form over function, like all Apple's products. It is not always the best product that sells the most.

The point is that the iPhone 4 has a design flaw, a flaw that both Apple's engineers and outside engineers, warned them about. It wasn't until the iPhone 4's release that people began claiming that all smartphones have the same problem either, almost like how Flash became evil overnight once Job's denounced it.

While I fully expect people to get the free cases from Apple, I doubt many will return to the iPhone 4 because 'its simply too pretty'. They'll relearn how to hold a cell phone to avoid the death grip. In a few years, you'll see a large number of people holding their cell phones with just their thumb and fore finger against their heads and you'll be able to point at them and say 'You owned an iPhone 4, didn't you?'

I'm still getting one, glad I'll be getting a free case.

Apple handled the situation alright IMO, but they should've skipped the comparison with other phones dropping bars. The problem with iPhone 4 is interference when you bridge 2 antennas together, not just attenuation from holding it.

I agree. I think they should of left the comparisons out of the press conference.

iPod releases and sell millions

iPhone introduced in 2007
"There's no way the iPhone will be successful, its too expensive"
iPhone sells millions

iPod Touch releases
"Why would anyone buy an iPhone without the phone?"
iPod Touch sells millions

iPad releases
"Why would anyone buy a giant ipod touch? Its gonna fail"
iPad sells millions

iPhone 4 releases
"The 3GS has been outdated for a year and the iPhone 4 isn't that different"
iPhone 4 sells millions

iPods, iPods touches, iPhones, iPads, all of them selling in the millions, maybe just maybe, these devices sell in the millions because they're actually good? Have anti Apple fans thought about that? Or is it just trendy to bash a successful company and that you hate the CEO, which has nothing to do with the devices themselves?

Continue the "marketing" excuse rant, while Apple sells their devices in the millions.

This is retarded. While the iPhone may sell partly due to marketing, the reason it sells as much as it does is because it's a damn good smartphone. If it was just a pretty piece of crap it would have sold as poorly as Apple TV and the G4 Cube.

Form over function my ass. Are you saying it doesn't function or that its aesthetics sell it over its function? Are you saying it doesn't have the best media capabilities of any smartphone? Does not have the best applications? Does not have the most complete experience, free of crapware, difficult to use software and apps, and over-engineered/overly-geeky things like task killers and app permissions?

almost like how Flash became evil overnight once Job's denounced it.

It's quite the opposite. Flash was always considered a resource hogging pile of shit. It was not until Jobs denounced it that it became the darling of the nerdroid circles. "The enemy of my enemy" mentality.

I doubt many will return to the iPhone 4 because 'its simply too pretty'.

Not because it's a great smartphone

They'll relearn how to hold a cell phone to avoid the death grip. In a few years, you'll see a large number of people holding their cell phones with just their thumb and fore finger against their heads and you'll be able to point at them and say 'You owned an iPhone 4, didn't you?'

Because the issue effects sooo many people, right? Are you claiming Jobs outright lied about the low number of complaints and returns? Really?

The reality distortion field is not around Jobs and Apple "fan boys" rather the anit Apple lobby.

Just a fear of upsetting him. I saw it at the All Things Digital conference where Mossberg looked like a schoolgirl next to Jobs. I see it with Gruber too. I see it in the published emails where they have to praise him before getting down to the question they have. It's worse than pathetic, actually.

Keep your iPhone. I couldn't care less what you have. But the stupidity of not seeing that this design is flawed is akin to keeping your blinders. And that is sad.

That depends on how you hold it doesnt it?

Are you saying it doesn't have the best media capabilities of any smartphone?

Really? Why do you think it has the best media capabilities? Many phones have better sound quality and most phones handle more formats.

Does not have the best applications?

Does it? Most mainstream tasks will have similar apps on all platforms.

Does not have the most complete experience, free of crapware, difficult to use software and apps, and over-engineered/overly-geeky things like task killers and app permissions?

I'm not even sure what your getting at here, you dont have to install crapware (and its available for all platforms) or any of the other things your complaining about. Its choice that you seem to dislike, the choice to install what you want, the choice to have things running in the background, the choice to get geeky with your apps. Of course you dont have to do any of those things but having the choice to do it is important.

Reply in bold.

Because it does. The ability to seamlessly play music from the #1 digital music distributor in the world is a start. The ability to play OGG, no so much.

Most ported from the iPhone and in inferior form.

I am talking more about the Nascar type apps that come pre-installed on other phones.

You can play music bought from iTunes on any phone.

Most ported from the iPhone and in inferior form.

If you say so, although I've been using my most popular app, TomTom, on my phone for a few years.

I am talking more about the Nascar type apps that come pre-installed on other phones.

My phones have nothing pre installed apart for the OS, like I said its about choice.

Again in bold

The iPhone has NEVER been the best smartphone out there and still isn't. That's just your opinion not fact. Just because something sells the most doesn't make the best. I don't even need to give examples of things that sell the most that are inferior as there's no need.
