Take some newspaper and just wrap it around the phone. Place phone on floor, proceed to jump on it. Wrap broken pieces + newspaper in more newspaper and mail out.

As pointed out before, USPS Priority Mail boxes are free from the post office.

D/C is also free if you print your label via the website.

3lbs? Really? It weighs as much as a Dell Inspiron 300m? Damn, that's not a phone I want to carry around!

Not being a pansy, my feedback is 151 right now...since 1998....I try to sell everything on forums that allow it before going there :)...but I have a good record, one neutral that was in retailation on an item that one person bought, wanted shipped to another person, and a third person was paying :)....

I guess I will see how it goes...so far another 3 emails have come him....

If someone told me that I would have to pay "actual shipping charges" I would assume that I had to pay the amount of the "stamp". Not the other items, like a box and padding. Especially since a USPS Priority box is free and so are old newspapers crumpled up. Maybe you should also charge him for the gasoline you use to go to the post office?

BTW, I've never head that shipping an electronic item is illegal.

The guy only bid $1 to begin with... $10 for shipping is a bit excessive.

Also per your auction - "Buyer pays for shipping and insurance (actual charges with no handling fees). Insurance is optional however, we will not be responsible for uninsured items which are lost or damaged."

That says nothing about packaging costs.

Buyer is also not new to ebay - July 2002 , 163/145-0-1

No he later on said put the battery and ear bud in an envelope and ship it....which I may have done but that came way later with the accusation that "if ship cost too much for weight, just ship battery and ear bud in envelope. Should be same as letter."

still battery and ear bud will probably make it to 1lb. I wasn't selling just a battery and ear bud though and I don't have envelopes for that regardless. I'd have been willing to work with him, but it's non-stop with this guy....he is not using the ebay 'contact bidder' function which is stupid on his part as he is abusing it and it's easily tracked.

I am thinking what I want to do....it's sort of principal now...I would have been open to ship only the battery in the beginning if he asked. Instead he comes out with I am RIPPING OFF EBAY!!!! and USPS ONLY CHARGE $3.85 TO SHIP THINGS LIKE THIS, YOU GO ENTER 1 LB PACK TO ME AND SEE!!!! (this was when he wanted the whole deal)....

It's just unreasonable. I even offered him to ship it for a slight loss and he called me a liar on it. He now is saying I could have just put the stamp on the nokia box, although before he insisted I ship it within a separate box. This is for a $11 deal total....not a big cash cow for either buyer or seller and he is making like I am raping him for tens if not hundreds of dollars.

I used to list all my fees clearly, but with shipping companies changing rates I got killed. Right when USPS changed from flat rate weight based to variable rate zones I got a ton of orders from California and the West coast for all my now way low fees. I had a ton of electronics on sites at the time and lost a little over $100 (net no profit and not even breaking even)....so I took off shipping costs and just say I charge actual COSTS but no fees....I will add that COSTS include boxes, tapes, labels, gas/transport, ink....but will not be excessively marked up...I can give an actual cost with zip code).

Another thing that lately has gotten me a few times is many contact you for total and it shows the zip code....well you invoice and there confirmed address you get back is not the zip code listed....I have lost on that enough now where I am going to mention it in my auction details (if your ebay zip code does not match your ship to zip code please mention it)....

Well, chalk this up as a lesson learned.

State in your auction very plainly - "SHIPPING WILL BE DONE ONLY VIA (XXX) AND A FLAT RATE OF $XX.XX WILL BE CHARGED. IF YOU CANNOT ABIDE BY THIS PLEASE DO NOT WASTE MY TIME AND EVERYONE ELSES AND DO NOT BID.

Be realistic with your charges though. Be fair, and don't be scared to pad an extra buck or two for your packing materials and gas (or more if its a large parcel), but thats about it.

For what its worth, 3LBS for a phone and 1LB for the battery and earbud sounds excessive.

This page from nokia shows the ENTIRE PHONE weighs 3.4 ounces, way less than a pound..... Are you planning to send this thing in a metal box or something? First class mail for your zip codes on 5 ounces is $1.29 or priority is $3.85?

a packing cost is an actual charge, it's not a fee. Like I said some people are misunderstanding that so I will correct it. I am $2.40 away from the actual payment I have to pay the shipper. $2.40 is not excessive once I drive the item (and I deliver packages enough that vehicle costs are real costs to me), print out all the labels, tape up the box....pad it, etc I will more than likely just break even on the cost of shipping.

Also cost of the item has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with shipping...I don't understand why people can't understand that.

I don't use busted up grocery store boxes (of which all stores here dispose of them the same day) unless I have them and then I am cheaper...or they want priority shipping and I have boxes for free (no I don't use them to ship UPS or FedEX and will not turn them 'inside out' even though I have tons of old ones before they marked them USPS)....

I ship a monitor in a grocery store box even if I am double boxing it, they will absolutely not honor insurance if the thing arrives in pieces. I have a hard time with the few excessively packaged items still getting broken (blatant outer box damage) and the claims getting put into limbo until they realize I am not going away.

Now this item is hardly something that needs to be protected, unless the guy wanted a mint condition original box....if I knew he really wanted just the battery and ear bud then I'd have recommended not getting the rest of the package, put the battery and bud in a stiff cardboard mini-box and padded a flat rate $3.85 envelope and charged him about $5 (confirmation and padding/box) ... I would again break even and he'd get what he wanted.

I treat my sales as a business, I pay taxes and don't use media shipping to ship cheap.

Like I said also I am fair and understand the guy maybe didn't realize the extra items adding up to 3lbs, but when he immediately is calling me a crook and ranting and raving, I sort of don't care to help him. Even now emails randomly trickle in :)

While I agree the buyer should have asked before bidding, 3 pounds is terribly excessive for what you are selling.

I just weighed the box, manual, phone, battery, and charger for my Nokia 6340i, and it all weighed 1lb 4 oz.

I don't ship first class. The guy doesn't get it and I end up at a loss.

The original shipping quote is on the phone with accessories and manuals in it's original box and was weighed at 3lbs shipping wieght by the post office.

I would have agreed to parcel post at the cost of shipping + confirmation + whatever the padded envelope costs, if the guy was not such an idiot from the start.

Keep in mind we are talking a couple bucks here not like this is even going to buy me a combo meal at McDonalds, I will be lucky to get even a value item...

However, the battery and ear bud would add to less than 1lb each, priority is a $4.30 min with tracking, parcel post would cost me about $2 with tracking then I will need a padded envelope....I would not charge $10 for this service.

The phone is light....the manuals, boxes and stuff are not.

The label is free yes, but then you have ink and paper still....I am not sure what is cheaper, the .45 the post office charges and just passing it on or increasing my listings a quarter or so for ink and paper...

Everyone knows that if the shipping charge isn't listed in the auction, not to bid because you will get raped by shipping and "handling" charges. It's his own fault. Charge him $20 just to carry on the eBay tradition of not listing the shipping price in the auction.

the auctions said $10. he won the auction and agreed to those terms. charge him $10, or sell it to the next highest bidder.

Well, to simplify in the future you could state you will charge actual shipping + material/handling/gas fee which usually runs $2-$3 (or whatever you find it's been running you). I think you can use the shipping calculator on ebay and figure in your materials cost in the calculation.

It's not a big deal, I have been overcharged from sellers and their shipping before (a lot more than your $2 box and peanut fee), the guy should just suck it up and follow through on the payment; if he gives you a negative then you should just suck it up too.

Once I put this box into another box with padding it will weigh a little over 2lbs....this bumps me to a 3lb shipping weight....

I am willing to bet the outer box I use + padding may be more than the phones wieght alone (4ounces or so).

Is everyone just out for blood here or just not understand how shipping works?

Like Priority Flat Rate...I can ship pretty much anything that fits in that envelope for $4.30 with DC....they will charge me that if it's empty or with a 4lb brick.....

Also so many people falsely believe USPS is the cheapest method when I am quoting them FedEx Ground...this guy did too....it was .80 cents cheaper than USPS and includes the tracking and insurance.

I am hardly ripping off anyone and my weight came from the boxed package I brought to the PO....now perhaps they errored, it's possible. However I gave up trying to help this guy.

A simple 'hey I just bought one of these phones (he did), it weighed xlbs shipped and cost $x.xx on the label...I only need really the battery and ear bud, can you just ship those cheaper, you can even relist the box and manuals if you'd like'

instead of all CAPS and accusing me of charging him $10 for a $1.42 shipping rate.
