A price, a price, my kingdom for a price!

Vz can't price it any higher than the iPhone. They lost a crap load of subs already due to the iPhone, and when you factor in that the Storm doesn't have wifi, I think they need to undercut it. I'm going to guess $150.

I had Verizon for a few years, they don't give you deals. Not on the phones, not on the plans. I watched the video on this, and frankly it's only going to appeal to people who either hate AT&T, hate Apple or already have Verizon. The phone won't fully sync properly with Vista 64, which is completely unacceptable. Besides the Blackberry name I'm not sure why this phone is hyped up. The interface is whatever looking to me, and it doesn't bring anything new to the table. Not saying it's a bad phone but to me it's just another iPhone clone. Albeit it one that looks much nicer than the Dare or the Instinct.

Then you haven't been looking at it much. The screen click interface is a first of its kind. Blackberry has been around much longer than the iphone, and they're keeping their own OS on the Storm, so calling it an iphone clone is just plain ignorant. It's a solid business class phone and isn't supposed to appeal to the same demographic that the iphone does.

Every business person I know hates the iPhone because they hate the lack of a physical KB. the only reason the Storm doesn't have a KB is because the iPhone doesn't. This "click" thing is mostly a gimick, my GF's Dare has tactial feedback with the stupid vibrate when you press a button thing. This is basically what the Storm has, but the screen presses in like a giant button. How is that any better than what the Dare has? If anything, it's not and it's just another thing that can poss.ibly break on the phone. I would bet money without an iPhone there would be no Bold. BB has been around longer, but that doesn't mean this phone isn't aimed at the iPhone crowd. As it stands the iPhone ousells every BB phone, and even if they're targerted at a different demographic, BB wants a peice of that pie. Hence - the Storm.

I don't see many business people jumping to get a Storm, unless most were full of shit about their "I hate n physical KB" The Storm, aside from the RIM email, does nothing note worthy and Verizon will charge out of ass, so monthly fee wise this will be one of the most expensive phones you can get bar none.

Have you used the storm? I'm guessing no from the sound of it. Don't knock it till you try it. It's not just vibrating when you press shit, it's true tactile feedback. You want buttons? You have them. It doesn't solve all the problems of eliminating actual buttons, but it's the best I've seen/used thus far.

As far as price goes, it's already been cofirmed for $200 (less than the iphone was when it was released) and requires the same data subscription that ATT requires for the iphone. It's the same price monthly

There is a guy on CIO.com who argued both sides:

Pro Blackberry

8. Stereo Bluetooth
7. Removable battery
6. Expandable memory
5. Digital camera, video recording
4. Storm works as a tethered modem
3. Touch screen provides tactile feedback
2. Cut-and-paste
1. Multitasking champ

Pro iPhone

8. 2nd Generation Product
7. Built-in Memory
6. iTunes App store
5. iTunes Integration
4. Full Virtual QWERTY Keyboard in Portrait
3. Wifi
2. iPod Functionality
1. Safari

Cut and paste is a no brainer really. I use it all the time on my BB. It's insanity to not have it.

the screen is one large button, the vibrating is a gimmick, I don't like it on my GF's Dare and I don't like it on the Instinct I played with. The fact the whole screen presses down is sort of cool, but again you can't feel what virtual button you're pressing because it's one huge button. I don't need to use it to know it won't be any better than the Dare. You'll still more than likely have to look at the screen right? Well most people will. I don't much like the KB on my iPod Touch, if it pressed down to give me the illusion of an actual key I would probably dislike just about as much. As it stands I can type on my Touch without looking at it and my accuracy is good. on this new BB I'd have to try it out, but it sounds like a gimmick and people who don't know how to type will still look so who's it really helping? A good typist can memorize a virtual iPhone KB in a week or less. And I get tactical feedback on my Touch too, when I press the screen I feel glass :)

My 8830 World Edition is starting to wig out and I'm due for a new phone from Verizon, so I will be checking out the Storm. But, it's going to be all about the keyboard for me. Even if it's the greatest media player in the world, the lack of a physical kb, makes me nervous. I have an iPod Touch 2G and I can't stand the kb; I couldn't imagine having to send twenty or thirty e-mails a day with it. I know the Storm's go the tactile feedback kb, but I'm skeptical.

The last BB I had with a really good keyboard was my 8703. The 8830 Curve kb looks similar, so that's what I'm getting if I don't "click" with the Storm. With the money I save buying a Curve over a Storm, I could buy an iPod nano.

I get where you're coming from. I guess I always have looked at my phone while texting regardless, so the whole 'virtual' button thing hasn't really bothered me. Well, the iphone does because the buttons are so damned small for my fingers. That's where the storm improves for me, as I can have my finger over the button and KNOW I'm in the right spot, and THEN click. So I don't hit wrong keys like I'm prone to do on the iphone. It's small I guess, but helps my biggest personal problem with touchscreens.

So I like the sound of this phone. I was looking forward to Wifi on my next device but if those verizon assholes are going to force a data plan up my ass, being in the location I am, I hope they use lube.

Anyone priced out the minimum monthly payments to have this phone? Excluding the initial equipment cost.

The base plan is $39.99, and you're required to have a data plan ($30) on all blackberries. So at a minimum with no texting you're looking at $70/mo.

Also, the Storm doesn't have wifi. Well that might not be entirely true, the hardware may be there but verizon locks down their phones. None of their phones are wifi capable, including the storm.

Rumors are also going around that they'll CHARGE EXTRA for GPS use ($10/mo) which is ridiculous. Any other carrier has GPS included in the data use, so if you have a data plan your GPS works fine. If this turns out to be true verizon will be losing quite a few potential buyers, me included.

If you don't want to deal w/ verizon's shit, best buy will be selling the phone by itself for $509.

no wifi in there at all. rumors ranging from no space left to it was omitted for battery life purposes. would've been nice to have though. but no wifi phones? how about the samsung i760, the samsung saga or the htc vx6800?

gps is unlocked. but if you want turn-by-turn directions with voice prompts, vz navigator is available for $10/month.

I was just going off what I heard with verizon not having any wifi phones.

With the GPS there are several free 3rd party programs available, so you're saying the GPS is fully unlocked and those programs can be used? If so that's awesome, and not what was reported verizon was going to do.

ive heard that blackberry maps and google maps work perfectly fine out of the gate. and uncjigga took some more pictures and posted them in the other thread and it has geotagged information which relies on gps and it even mapped it out on the blackberry maps application, so thats some proof that it should be working.

The GPS is UNLOCKED out of the box, AFAIK. This device is not GPS gimped like other Verizon phones of old.

From what I hear it was a Qualcomm Chipset issue that prevented autonomous GPS support. AFAIK any device with the MSM6800 or later chipset will eventually have unlocked autonomous GPS. For reference the Storm uses the MSM7600.

I picked one up last night - still trying to wrap my head around it. The touchscreen is both great and a little odd; probably moreso that I am not use to the lack of an actual keyboard.

Does this mean that locations-based third party apps are out of the question??

Yes. It can triangulate using cell towers but that only gives you a 1500 meter radius of where they think you are. Not very accurate.

Yup, fuck verizon they completely botched this phone. Hopefully it's just a temporary exclusive and we'll see it elsewhere after the new year. There's rumors floating around that that's the case.

INCORRECT. Google maps does not have an option to start the GPS, but if you start it and get a fix with BB maps, for example, then go back to Google maps you'll find it has 2 metre accuracy. It's a problem with Google maps.

The Storm GPS is NOT LOCKED.

I've read 2 reviews that said you have to pay $10/month extra to get your GPS freedom. That's what I would call locked.

From Boy Genius:
The Verizon Storm?s A-GPS is locked to Verizon (the tech that speeds up getting a GPS fix by using the cellular network to triangulate your approximate position) but the actual GPS chip is not. That means you?re free to use any BlackBerry GPS application your hearts desire without any worry of Big Red crippling your dreams.

Also this:

At the end of the day, if you?ve been eyeing the Storm, we suggest you either go play with a demo unit at a store, or go ahead and buy one. That way you?ll be able to decide for yourself if you really love the thing, or maybe just don?t care for it. This isn?t a cookie-cutter device, and it?s not for everyone. That said, we?re sure these things are going to fly off the shelves at Verizon stores on Friday, we just have a feeling there will also be a lot of returns.

The review also mentions that WiFi was left off at the drawing board stages at the specific request of Verizon.

It's a problem with Google maps. Google should be releasing an updated version soon. The GPS is not locked and I'm not getting my information from a couple of random web reviews.

Yes GPS will be completely unlocked confirmed from Verizon myself, I just can't wait for that little fedex box from Verizon to show up.

Alright, well the reviews are in and the GPS IS LOCKED. Whatever the verizon guy told you was to get you to get the phone I guess. BBmaps works fine but all 3rd party programs are locked out.

Does this mean that locations-based third party apps are out of the question??

Yes. It can triangulate using cell towers but that only gives you a 1500 meter radius of where they think you are. Not very accurate.

It's a problem with Google maps. Google should be releasing an updated version soon. The GPS is not locked and I'm not getting my information from a couple of random web reviews.

Alright, fair enough. I guess the reviews I read blamed the phone for the google maps problems and not the program.
