I bet the people preaching negatively about speeding do it, but just don't get caught.

I go with the flow of traffic. :)

I used to, but I don't really see any reason or need to anymore. Being foolish really isn't worth the trouble it causes everyone. :)

I did 120 in a 70 the other day. Kill me I guess? No other cars even remotely near me... interstate on Sunday in rural Alabama. Gotta love it.

How would you contest the ticket if you got caught?

"Duh, I've never been caught before, judge! Honest! You should go easy on my because I do it all the time and this is only the first time that I've been caught!"

Where is this? My friend got pulled over (in my car, with me in the passenger seat) for doing 93 in a 65 in Indiana, but all it ended up being was a $120 ticket. Luckily, though, the officer never made my friend sign the ticket, so he just didn't worry about it.

Man, your friend is gonna be in for a suprise the next time gets pulled over. The words "Hands on your head" and "outstanding warrant" will be spoken.

How? The ticket said, and I'm paraphrasing here, "Signing this ticket is not an admission of guilt, just an admission that you received the ticket." If my friend didn't sign it, he never "received" the ticket...right?

After midnight? Was this a deserted interstate or something. I know I8 from Phoenix to San Diego is a ghostyard pretty much day or night?

Always contest it, worse that could happen is they reduce it.

Not always. I got a ticket for bullsh|t and tried contesting it. I was following a cop through a neighborhood on my way home when he slammed on his breaks in front of me. Then he was going 20 or so in a 35 for a few minutes (I kept more than my distance if he was going to start pulling crap) before pulling off, pulling back on the road behind me, pulling me over, and giving me a ticket for following too close. The guy was young, obviously a new cop, possibly on a power trip. I spoke with both the officer himself and the officer's C.O. over the phone a few days later and they BOTH told me that I did NOT deserve the ticket. I asked for it in writing and they agreed. Sweet! When I got the letter, it was completely the other way around: saying that they believe that I did deserve the ticket. I still have the letter around here somewhere, too.

Anyway My first appearance was to claim innocent or guilty. The court clerk was going to cut the amount of the fine in half (~90). I told her that I wanted to plead innocent, so they gave me a trial date later. When I went to trial, I gave my testimony and the passenger in my truck who I brought as a witness also gave his. The entire time, the judge was talking to the court reporter about how much she could fine some other guy who didn't show up in court. When the officer gave his rebuttle, she listened intently. She then found me guilty and said I was so because I couldn't prove I was innocent. Then she said that I was arrogant and ignorant, right in court! Total character assassination and unprofessionalism. Anyway, she cut the fine down by TEN WHOLE DOLLARS. Wow... plead guilty and get 50% of the fine. Plead innocent, get found guilty, and get 95% of the fine.

I tried to appeal, but the city holds the appeals court in a county building. The county charges the city ~$350 for the use of their facilities so the city forwards the charge on to ME, the appealing party. It wasn't worth it, but I was so pissed. That's why I fvcking hate pigs and the law.

:)

Sorry to hear about that, every time I have contested a ticket I have gotten it dropped (knocking on wood)...course then again I was not going 30 mph over the speed limit either.

You were going 94 in a 65. You did something wrong!! Accept the consequence of your actions and pay the ticket.

The law is unreasonable because it's illegal to go 1 mph over the limit, and I'm willing to bet that the OP wasn't the only person driving 1 mph over the limit or faster.

It's illegal to murder. There are people who murder who go unpunished. Therefore it is unreasonable to have a law against murder. Right?

Poor analogy. People speed all day, every day, right in front of cops. Cops iognore it UNLESS the person is X miles over the limit, where X is whatever arbitrary limit the cop decided on today. Or the cops ignore it unless the driver is black, or unless the driver is under 25, or unless the driver is driving a sports car, etc. Unequal enforcment is not fair and goes directly against "all men are created equal".

A more correct analogy would be: it's illegal to murder, but people murder other people right in front of cops and don't get arrested for it most of the time. Of course, that isn't true, so it's not a valid analogy.

Just ask for deferred judgement or traffic school or something that can keep it off your record. You'll still end up paying money to the county for your infraction, but at least you can beat the insurance companies.

BTW, don't get your hopes up when you don't see the officer there. Your first court date is usually just an arraignment hearing; the officer doesn't need to be there. If you plead not-guilty, they set a trial date for later; that's when the officer will be there.

I would think there's nothing you can do. What state do you live in? I was going 115 in a 70 and all I got was a $250 or so fine.

It's called discretion. Take a criminal justice or a law course sometime. You can sit here and say that it's "unreasonable", but it is actually very reasonable.

A law is not suddenly made "reasonable" by rabid and blind enforcement, and a law is not made "unreasonable" by lax enforcement.

on what grounds are you fighting the ticket?...

you admit to your own wrongdoing and are trying to get out of paying the state the fee that you deserve to pay

just pay the ticket

I realize that is the case with our corrupt and over-complicated law system, but it doesn't mean it SHOULD be that way.
