So Sara/h = slut, Wesley = idiot, etc...

If we have a boy then I will name him Bruce. Never knew any bad bruces. A girl I am not sure.

i have to laugh at these kind of things...
using your logic, your son will be gay, because bruce is a gay man's name...

i've known a sarah and she wasn't a slut. i've known 2 wesleys and one was a complete stoner idiot but i didn't have much contact with the other one, so i can't really say anything about him.

Sarah for sure. Sara looks like something adapted from a different language. Plus it's spelled Sarah in the bible.

Your name is Bruce and you are gay? So does that make Batman gay? ;)

no, my name is not bruce, and by your logic, yes, batman is gay.

do you really want THAT common of a name?

Common...yes, but it has a very special meaning to us.

Fair enough, I was actually going to edit the post and say "unless there is sentimental value attached to the name". If that is the case, no 'h'

If it has a sentimental meaning then why don't you spell it the same way the person who it comes from spelled it?

Because my wife like the "h". Both of my grandmothers names were Sara, I personally like it with no "h" as it is more original. Like my name with only one L (Mitchel).

If you spell it with the h all sentimental meaning disappears. Either Sara or pick a new name :) On the other hand, keep in mind that originality leads to confusion. For example, my uncle named one of my nephew's Michaell. What the fuck was he thinking? I have no idea.

Edit: Who cares if it's spelled that way in the bible. The person that wrote it (I tell you it's probably not the person you think it is) probably just liked it that way more than Sara. Does that mean your grandmother's name should be forgotten? ...I've thought about this way too much...

We went with Sarah. Funny thing is, we never even considered Sara.

I think Sarah is more traditional (in the Bible, sort of) and Sara just always looked funny to me, like it was made up. My daughter knows at least four other Sara/h's (mostly Jewish, too), with a mix of both ways.

BTW, it is not a big deal, but, no matter how you spell it, others will screw it up her whole life. We even had people send personalized birth gifts with "Sara". You would think they would ask someone how we spelled it, but, for some people, there is only one "right" way.

I know a Bruce from college -- extremely creepy and annoying guy. We'd be in class and he'd ask a completely irrelevant, tangential, question, usually requiring twenty or so minutes of explanation as to why his original question made no sense -- which he'd follow up with "but couldn't you..."

eventually, most profs brushed him off so they could teach.

Plus, he progressed from "unkempt college student" to "smelly unkempt college student" to "homeless guy, appears to have woken up in a gutter" over the years.

Don't judge a name by the people you know who have it -- any reasonably common name has its share of weirdos.

I couldn't agree more...I have a pretty common first name spelled in an uncommon way and it's a friggin curse having to go through life always spelling your name for people. I really hated my Mom for it back in the day (I'm talking like 1st grade) and it still sucks.

Never, ever...ever ever ever...name your kid a common name spelled an uncommon way to be different or because you think it's cute.

Thats my point. A lot of people when they think of "insert name' of a person not just as it as a name. I know a lot of people that would not use a name because of someone.
Kinda like when most people hear the name Costanza most people think the same thing.

I've always perferred the no 'h' method. All the Sara's I've known were nice, friendly people. All the Sarah's I've known were rude, pretentious, and ugly. But of course, this is a personal experience, and wouldn't apply to anyone else. I just think the no 'h' version is a modern way to say "princess" or have the bible name without sounding like you are 60+ years old.

My GF of 2 years is named Sara. I was so relieved to find out it had no 'h'.

But it doesn't matter how it is spelled, people will ask each and every time. With or without the 'h', people won't know how to spell it.
