Hello,
I just set up a computer that appears to have heat problems. With the air conditioner off (80 degrees in the house), the computer will boot and run for about 5 to 10 minutes, and then it will shut down. After about half a minute, it will try to reboot itself, but get stuck in an infinite reboot loop. The computer ran Unreal Tournament loop today for over an hour when I had the air conditioner on and seems stable. The weird thing is, the north bridge and the CPU do get hot, but it shouldn't be anything that causes the computer to crash. I would say it gets to about 110 to 115 degrees on both the NB and CPU. Of course, with the AC on the NB and CPU are cooler. Is this board too sensitive to heat? I don't want to run the AC all the time (I don't need it, and neither does my other computer, which is equivalent in speed). Here is what the computer is:

AMD Duron 750 (not overclocked)
Giga-byte GA-7zx (VIA KT133)
Quantum Fireball KA 7200rpm
DVD ROM drive
ZIP
Floppy
300 Watt Power supply.
Retail Duron 750 heatsink

I have Arctic Silver on the core of the CPU and it does have proper contact. I am thinking about getting a bigger heatsink, but would that do any good? Is there anything I can do to reduce the sensitivity to heat? Does anyone have experience with the above motherboard that would be helpful?

Thanks in advance.

i would either try to drop the voltage on the cpu, or get a better hs/f, but thats just me...

Thanks for the advice. I looked at the bios and it says that the CPU is running at 91 degrees with the AC on. I think I am going to get a better heatsink. This board doesn't have any voltage adjustments/setting so it is running at 1.6v right now. I turned the AC on so it's stable right now....

I wonder if the NB is getting too hot? How can I tell if the CPU is getting too hot or if the NB is getting too hot?

ehm I use metric sys .. (with 100°C boiling temp of water) what would those tempratures be in degrees celcius .. ?

Hmm the only way for me to see if a pcu or die or whatever is hot is too feel at it ..., but that only goes good with graphic cards .. cous the temperature of the Heatsink is misleading u should feel at the heatsink and then at the back of the die (on 3Dcards just the other side of the PCB) there should be a big difference (meaning u can clearly feel it with yer finger) between the two if u got descent cooling by the HSF

I found out what the problem was. I bought a new, bigger heatsink for the Duron 750. It would still shut itself down after ten minutes or so. I thought about it for awhile and decided to test the PS. I bought a new 300 Watt PS and the problem disappeared! THe board is rock solid now. That is the second defective PS I have bought from CompUSA. STAY AWAY from CompUSA power supplies!

Heck, stay away from CompUSA anything! ;)

When the USB card that I bought didn't work right and they charged me a 15% return fee to get a refund, I stopped buying stuff from CompUSA. Of course, this was only the last in a long string of annoyances. :(
