It is just another piece of the puzzle to bring the USA down to its knees... Bin Laden does not need his henchmen to come and do things in the states, he has Obama beating us down every week on the road to ruin. I cannot believe how out of tune this president is with the wishes of the American people.. WTF.

find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science

It isn't enough that we have to bring democracy to other countries now we are in charge of being cheer leaders too ? If they are not proud of their contribution then they should work to change it, but I guess now we should be the ones to do that too. Probably will announce the building of a new launch platform in Iraq costing only a few hundred billion so they can feel good about themselves. It wouldn't surprise me if they start passing out handouts that read "Have a problem ? From poverty to splinters in fingers . The USA can solve it and it will not cost you anything because that is what we are here for ! "

I do not understand why it is the responsibility of the U.S. or more specifically NASA to reach out to Muslim nations. Hell I can understand if it was an effort to reach out internationally, but specifically to Muslim nations seems to be like affirmative action going global.

Why don't those countries reach out to scientifically advanced nations to increase their involvement?

Also with how this administration has been wanting to cut NASA funding and canceling major projects it seems like a slap to their face to reduce research and development yet have NASA go out to pander to one particular international segment.

I think it's good to want to bring Muslim people into the scientific fold and I see benefits on both sides. But it's silly to make it a NASA priority.

He is off to a good start. NASA cant even get into low earth orbit now without using the Russians and their rockets.

Now what Obama has done to NASA finally makes sense. They couldn't launch men into space in the 9th century either.

Maybe NASA should be ordered to behead infidel astronauts once a month. Perhaps that would make Muslims feel better? Or perhaps NASA should host stonings?

This is absolutely ridiculous. I feel badly that I championed Obama and not Hillary in the primaries now. If Muslims feel badly about their scientific advancement, why the hell is that our problem? If they feel inferior to the evil Jewish Israelis in these regards, why is that our problem? Perhaps they should look inwards and introspect and consider blaming themselves for a lack of a contribution to science.

I don't think our nation's policy should be to purposely antagonize Muslims, but I don't think we should be bending over backwards to make them feel good either.

I wish we could get an Americans First president in office. Unfortunately both parties have sold us out in their own ways.

Can't believe all the stupidity in this thread. You realize this is kind of like what people like me try to do with Christians right? Try to get them to understand that Western Civilization has a great history of science and progress apart from fanatical religion?

It's sad. We'll probably never get through to you Muslim/Protestant/Creationist/whatever nuts. You enjoy the 17th century too much. The "good old days" right?

If you bother to watch the interview he explains it's basically muslim nations to contribute to the ISS. After watching it I feel like the goal is simply fund raising. All you morons freaking out should just watch the interview.

You're blaming that on Obama?

I think he's just saying that Obama would like NASA to try to work scientifically with Muslim nations the same way it works with other nations, to encourage more Muslim contributions to math and science as in the past.

Given that countries that work closely together on tough scientific problems are probably more likely to behave as friends, this doesn't really sound like such a crazy idea to me.

Given that at least one of this forum's members wants to put US Muslims in concentration camps, I doubt Mr Obama wanting to do anything with Muslims beside bombing them will get a positive reception here.

That was the plan under Bush. Even if constellation wasn't canceled we'd be in the same situation until 2015-2020.

In truth, our modern Algebra is a mix of different forms of it from many different cultures. The Greeks contributed plenty to what we use today, another large portion comes from India. A small percent comes from Babylon. And Babylon is as close to Muslim as Algebra gets [and they predated Islam by a few thousand years]. The form the Arabs like to present as thier own, is largely the Hindu Algebra...Which they picked up during one of thier many bloody Jihads/force conversions on the people of Pakistan.

So...when is NASA going to recognize the Greek/Christian contributions to the world ??
And how about the Hindu contribution ?

That, and the notion that bringing Muslim nations into the fold of technological inoovation could accelerate a cultural shift toward modern scientific rationality - the European enlightenment. Culturally Muslim nations are behind the west by several hundred years, and that is a principle source of tension between the Muslim world and the west.

It sort of seems that the Muslim world is in their Dark Ages, where the "church" is locking down on the people. I think it might partly have to do with the rate of change that interaction with the west brings.
