UPDATE - Now it's DEAD! <Dlink DI-604> Throughput? We don't need no stinkin throughput. </Dlink DI-604>

I've been having ass-poor internet connections. Even AT dies on me frequently.

Power cycle both the modem, router, etc. On a hunch, I unplug the router (DI-604) and feed the cablemodem directly into my PC.

Presto - instant 2MBps download speed.

Flash the router to 2.20, reboot, powercycle, reset to default, etc, etc etc.

112KBps download. WTF.

And the best part is, D-Link's "24-hour tech support" logo-feces they smear all over their products? Doesn't apply to Canada.

Anyone had this? Is it fixable, or am I looking at an RMA?

Update - Well, evidently the router filtered out my nasty commentary and decided to commit suicide! Hopefully this will give me enough grounds to return it for credit and buy something decent. Leaning towards a Linksys 4-port. Anyone have any horror stories about them?

- M4H

sucks. that happened to me but i flashed and it worked out. You try the other flashes? If not, then it's time to RMA or call their "tech support"

Does your router have the 2 antennas on the back?

I have the newer version w/ 1 and run the 3.20 firmware.

Yes, because those wired DI-604s have tons of antennas. 😛 You're thinking of the DI-614+ I bet.

If you can get a refund, send it back and pick up a 486 at a garage sale. Stick some NICs in it and instant router for yu0.

That's what I had before - a P120 with two NICs. Still have it, and I think I might fall back to it if I need to send this one back.

The upside of the router was the UPnP support for effortless voice chat over MSN. I could never get it to work right through the Linux firewall box.

My DI-604 works ok for me. I max out my bandwidth (176KB/s, ~1500mbps) with it, just the same as I did before.

As far as using an old machine for a router - it's a waste of money (electricity bill WILL go up, and after a few months to a couple years, will cost more than just buying the router would have), more painful to configure, etc. Plus, it's an extra machine to worry about keeping up-to-date on patches and stuff (not that dedicated routers can't have security flaws, but far fewer of them).

Double check to see if there is a specific connection (to your isp) setup for your router. I had the same problem (to earthlink dsl) and it turns out I didn't have the connection set up properly.

You must be on the E1 revision of the router. I'm on the C1 rev.

BoyBlunder - Absolutely nothing needs to be done to connect to my ISP. Just set the DHCP to "yes" and you're set - as evidenced by the fact that I'm posting now. 😛

Hell no. I'm sending it back to get the credit, and getting a BEFSR41 instead.

Edit - I'm back online and shared through my trusty old Linux box. Download speeds are right where they should be.

:Q

i have this same exact router, with the same exact problem...its really, really annoying having to go all the way into the back of our basement just to recycle power to the power strip that has our router/modem connected to it...

other than exchanging it once and constantly upgrading firmware, i've pretty much given up hope..i'm really surprised this problem STILL hasn't been fixed.

Does anyone have a problem with this router causing people to have to reboot a PC to regain internet connection??

They only have power settings on the computer to turn off the monitor. I checked the network card and made sure it wasn't "saving" power too.

Also do you usually have to manually put in the routers IP address as a gateway to get to the internet on this thing??

Fine. You don't want my help, that's fine. Go have fun with your crappy internet connection and see if I help you again.

Damn man, you're thick. Nowhere do I see him insulting you, being mean, or anything of the sort. WTF is up your ass?

I had the exact same problem as M4H, I tell him what I did to fix it, he tells me to piss off. That's fine, I hope he enjoys his crappy connection.

Thick? More like 'narrow' from what I read!

You told me what was broken about yours, I said that it couldn't be the case, and that I had obviously managed to configure the internet access properly, unless I can post without being online.

Trust me, if I were trying to insult you or tell you to "piss off", you'd know it. I'm about as subtle as a train wreck and just as graceful. :|

I have the DI-614+ (wireless version) and with my cable connection, I needed to clone the MAC address of one of my NIC's in order to prevent dropped connections (under Home/WAN options). Either that or you just have a defective router, which is pretty normal. I've never had bad luck with D-Link but I've got lots of headaches over Linksys. I once had to return 4 Linksys routers in a row to CompUSA before I gave up and got a Netgear router (RT314, probably the most pain-free router I've owned). But YMMV and you may have good luck with Linksys and just bad luck with D-link.
