My cousin spent four years in the Corps. My uncle spent ten. My grandfater spent eight. They're three of the most intelligent people I know.

Not Cool dude.... your really gonna get some folks pissed at you. There are so many reasons, leadership skills, not everyone is born rich and able to afford college, wanting to serve, travel, etcetrcetc.

Also, on average, I found people in the military to be *smarter* than at college in that they are more focused and make sound decisions because of that.

Maybe you should educate yourself on what ROTC is. Every person in the Cadet Corps of the AFROTC detatchment I belong to are intelligent, motivated, and responsible. Stupid people don't fly supersonic jets, gather intelligence, or lead squadrons of hundreds.

As I recall a few years ago, the army was accepting high school dropouts. I think this is what he meant by the "less intelligent". I have a lot of respect for people willing to join the armed forces. I personally don't have the balls to do it.

Definatly be sure to let us know what you decide. I always wanted to be an Airforce pilot when I was younger, but as I grew up I decided to be a programmer instead. AF and army both say that they have lots of positions in that field and such, but I don't know. Those guys can be pretty misleading. On the other hand, what they offer seems mighty tempting sometimes.

not true, all kinds go into the military, smart/dumb , all kinds end up there

certain areas/skills/job classifications tend to attract smarter/dumber people, but there are HIGHLY technical jobs in most all the branches of the military

that is just a stereotype

Well, I was in the same boat as you before - I almost enlisted as a Marine before I went to school, but a lot of my relatives told me to weigh in the pros and cons, and advised me to be an officer if I really wished to go to the military - I'm currently in school, gonna head out to the Army OCS as soon as I'm done.

Well iof the members here who are in the Armed forces are any kind of example I'd say you were about as wrong as you can be.

Yep, occassionally the army will take a high school dropout. Most of the time if they do pass the ASVAB test, they'll only qualify for a pretty mundane job such as Truck Driver. Then, they won't ever progress very high on the promotion ladder. Every company hires these people. Corporate and government.

BTW, a high school or college degree is by no means a measure of your intelligence. A college degree for the most part doesn't really teach you what you need to know about the career you'll be going into, just shows to others that you dedicated 4 years of your life to something and stuck with it. Also, I believe Albert Einstein never passed out of the 8th grade.

Update: I'm going to meet with another recruiter on tuesday. Right now I'm split about 70/30 on what I want to do... either the marines or the air force, with the advantage going to the marines at this point. Basically unless I get a really good deal from the AF recruiter I'm going marines. Also at this point I've decided 100% that I am going to do SOMETHING, I just need to figure out what.

Of course. Mechanics, Air traffic controllers, Medics, Fire crontrol personel, Weapon specialists, Tactical personel, Canteen personel, etc etc. It's like Microsoft: 2 programmers and 1.000.000 marketeers ;)

Yeah, thats how I'm assuming it'll be. I'm glad I've joined a fraternity already, it gave me a sample of hazing. Now that I know how it works I can deal with military hazing a lot better I'm sure.
