Seriously. I have done like a 360^0 turn. I used to be soooo bad at math and stuff (i failed calc1 4 times...3 times officially ;) ) and now I am doing well. I just had to learn a few lessons.
360° turn?

Did you fail geometry too? ;)

hehe...at least someone caught that :D

I went to UC Berkeley...

TRASH

The worst offenders of FUBAR'D English are employed by this institution.

I can't comment on Rutgears.

I ended up dropping this damn class. It was my only class, so I had to resign from the LSU.

I'm now 0-2 against Chinese professors. The first was so bad that I changed majors.

All this jibba jabba doesn't change the fact that a discussion is something a student pays for, and it should not be extremely difficult to extract what you need out of a discussion. Even if you study and already know the material, and use the discussion as a "review", what good is it if you can't understand 30% of what the speaker says during the review? Why would you even attend such a discussion?

Furthermore, some courses have required attendance or other things that occur during discussions that you need to be present to do. Not most, but some.

Also, inevitably you will be in a class where a total crackpot scatterbrain is the lecturer and a person who does not speak intelligible english is the TA. Then what? You're paying for nothing except the right to be graded on how you learn from a book. That is not right at all.

I had many foreigners as TAs during my university studies. There were a lot who were really quite good and I had no problem understanding them. The exception was my calc 3 TA. And BTW, calc 3 is not easy if you have only taken calc 1 yet somehow scored high enough on the AP to skip calc 2.

Actually the worst TA I had was the worst due to other problems aside from her lack of communication. She was in charge of providing the base code for all of our homework projects. Many times her code had bugs or was not ready in time to start the program early like we wanted to. She would refuse to see people during her office hours sometimes and we ended up having to complain during class to the prof. Unfortunately the prof berated the TA in front of us, which in retrospect may have felt satisfying but was totally incorrect etiquette.

Glad you finally realized that.

Well now that isn't their fault now is it? From my experience, my math courses have centered around the implied notion that you have to read the book, and classtime and/or discussion periods are mainly for discussion.

The truth hurts: If you read your book and look up stuff you don't know on your own time or ask about it during class/discussion, there is no reason that you should not excel unless under extenuating circumstances. The first two years, and the entire curriculum therein for the matter, are the equivalent in many other fields of study as 100 level classes. You need to learn the "german" so you can become a "german opera singer" so to speak. This structure only allows the determined or the intellectually superior to go on.

<---determined fool:(

It sucks, but deal with it:thumbsup:

I had all kinds of foreign TA's when I was at Cornell.

I didn't have much problem understanding them, even if their English wasn't that great. They still got the point across in the Economics, Chemistry, Physics, Math, etc. classes.

Maybe you just grew up in a really white neighborhood.

If you don't like foreign TA's, stay away from the big research universities. Go to a community college or liberal arts school.

WTF? An Indian complaining about others' accent? Are you kidding? perhaps you should go back to India to get TA's with less accent.

I've had quite a few TA''s that I could hardly understand the first day of class, but eventually it just gets easier to understand them once you get used to listening to that accent.

I have an Indian TA but he speaks clear English. He's fair and if you care about the course he cares to help you. He does review sessions for exams, and if you need help you can email him to set up a time (weekends) and place to meet to get help.

Nice. Insult the lady. A$$HAT.
Oops. Didn't mean that, meant RACIST A$$HAT. :disgust:

Have a nice day and try not to run down any minorities while you're at it.

EDIT: Aside from my throwing out an insult, OP has a good point (though he should have been a little more sensitive about it). These language difficulties are a valid concern. I had quite a few classes with TAs who mangled English and one professor whose command of English was perfectly fine but had a lisp that made it nearly impossible to understand him. Fortunately, most engineering classes really speak the language of mathematics. But paying $20-30K a year to NOT understand your instructors really sucks.

No, it's a dam good reason to drop the course. Most of these foreign mvtherfvckers will make 80% of their exam based off lecture, and the book can't help you because they will skip chapters and tailor the exams to what they want. Even worse, colleges keep raising tuition and paying less for FOB TA's and Prof's.

A perfect example is night class at Rutger's Camden, my mom had to drop an accounting course b/c of this Chinese guy who spoke English about as well as Hideo Nomo's pitching this year. And my mom has a 3.9 GPA with 3 classes left till graduation... Fvck u Rutgers!

Sure all everyone does is throw around the RACIST card. Sorry, but just because you can understand accents from your own people, doesn't mean everyone else can. My school is like 30 % asian, so I have many asian friends who can't understand them either. I'm not paying for nothing ,even if the class is easy. BTW last time I checked asians were not considered a minority, retard and I can actually understand most minority TAs.

IF you had read the rest of my post, you would see that I agree with you for the most part. However, being an racist A$$HAT about it is NOT justified. HTH you have any Asian friends with that attitude is beyond me. Or maybe they only know your "good" side. BTW, EXCEPT in academia, Asians ARE a minority. Please STFU now. I'd try to be friendlier and give you the benefit of the doubt but your previous couple of posts have pretty much labeled you as a jackass and until you prove me wrong, I'm not going to bother. Otherwise, please let me know if I'm missing your sense of humor completely.

Well said. I had to drop one class because I couldn't understand the professor and he didn't follow the textbook.

The problem isn't so much the foreign graduate students, but that universities use people with poor verbal and teaching skills as TAs to save money. I had a day of instruction in teaching as a freshman grad student before starting my TAship, and though that was quite a while ago and I'm a professor now, the situation hasn't improved at most universities (though one of the things I like about my particular department is the low usage of TAs in such situations.)

I already said that I wasn't racist. Whenever a white person says anything about another race/culture it's racist. As I said I have many asian friends and we even joke about the TAs in a similar fashion. This is a VERY common occurance in all Chemistry/Math/Physics courses in my school and I'm not exaggerating in what it sounds like to us. BTW not all asian people talk like that, most of which I know can speak english with no accents or very little ones. It's fustrating when people just say to deal with it when we shouldn't have to. What pissed me off was that comment about it's freshman cal you don't need a TA anyway. More than likely that person said that because he was Asian himself/herself.

If the TA wasn't neccessary why would they have them? I'll tell you what, lose the TA and give me some $$ back. Or did you only post you comment because your Asian/can't speak english yourself?
