That's a great review! Thanx for the link.
The CRX195 offers an ingenious feature that no other drive has. By default the drive reads CD's at 40x but can be "boosted" to 48x at the touch of the button. With the Turbo Boost enabled, the CRX195 had no problems exceeding 48x with pressed and CD-R media and had some pretty good seek times
and
Thanks to its P-CAV writing technology, Sony's new drive was more than 20 seconds faster than the 40x writers from Lite-On and TEAC
Those 2 features alone justified my buying it ;)

Do you just use the invoice that you get with an online order in place of a receipt? What about ordering online and choosing to pick it up locally. I did that a few days ago (used $20 off $75 and got WinXP for $80 :) ) and they only gave me an invoice paper...no receipt. Can I request a regular receipt for the Sony?

Hey Gaard, I asked CS about the using the invoice that ships with it as the receipt and she said it was fine as it was a valid proof of purchase. I don't know about the in store pickup, you'll have to check that out since I consider the free shipping to my door a bonus ;) hey hans :) that review kenja linked seems to indicate that this particular model drive is faster than the Lite On and has a 48x turbo read mode which is a feature only it has, so can it just be a tweaked Lite On still?

i dunno, i read that deal from the office depot memorex drive and it had a link to a site that had the real manufacturers of drives. and its a liteon.

if you look at the picture of the sony 40x on newegg it even looks like a liteon. the cdr labs review says

"Sony's new CRX195 is based loosely on the Lite-On LTR-40125W drive design. Along with a good number of writing speeds, this design offers P-CAV writing technology. While Sony's specs don't list this, the drive does offer three P-CAV writing speeds. The writing speeds below 20x use CLV, rather than P-CAV. "

so it might be the same it might not be. the drive at newegg is an oem and has a different model crx195e not crx195a, possibly since its oem. but if you look at the picture of tha tone, that looks like a liteon bezel even.

Thanks Punisher.

I wonder why the 32x is so much more expensive...even before the specials.

In light of all of the evidence I have to say I agree with you now hans, thanx for the info :) Now I wonder if this model can be flashed to a Lite On 48x writer :D

Went to O.D. and when I placed my order, the $20 for over $75 was expired. Called and said it expired on 9/9/02.
So price is not 89.99-20Sony rebate-20 mail in= $49.99.

Picked it up, installed it. Drive is not recognized under Nero, InCD, NovaStor or NovaStor's Instant Recovery programs as anything other than either a 16x or an occasional 24x recording device. :(

Unless someone has a clue, it's gotta go back.

Look on this page under Office Depot and you'll see it doesn't expire until the 30th and since myself and others used the coupon in the last 2 days I would say someone is jacking you around ;)

Mine will be here later today so sit tight and let me see what the dealio is with it and I'll get back to you :) Are you using certified 40x media? Have you tried different 40x Media? just some things that sometimes resolve such issues. BTW often updating to the newest version of Nero (if you haven't already) will resolve such issues. Another potential fix is to PM sakic19 and see which firmware he flashed to as it will make it a 48x writer and probably result in Nero recognizing it. I'll post back what I find out.

Yeah, its not the $20 (or free in some cases) that the OfficeMax drives were a week or two ago :)

Thanx for the link Devistater :)
OK, I just installed mine, used the B's Gold that came with it and burned a disc@40x lighting fast :D Fairly quite drive as well. The interface on B's was a little different but provides full functionality and did the multi-session disc without even asking about it just added the new session right on. I used Memorex 40x disc BTW and you can use it for 30days for all your MP3 burning after which you have to buy their upgrade if you want the MP3 function.
