I seem to recall a story or two about someone above the fires "riding the debris down" when the tower collapsed under them and they made it out relatively unscathed. Geez, I know I'd have crapped my pants if I was that person.

urban myth. Although a couple of fireman survived in a lower stairwell after the collapse. (Nicholas Cage starred in the movie iirc)

That's what I thought. How screamingly obvious and the author has to make it a fucking conspiracy...

Life insurance had nothing to do with it, everyone killed in the 9/11 attacks (except for the hijackers) was classified as a homicide by the NY Medical Examiner.

Does anyone have any pics of the results of jumpers?

Gore thread?

From what I understand people who fall from great heights look relatively normal on the outside. They don't pop or anything like that. It's their insides that are a mess.

Not true - they go splat. It's very messy. You are not likely to find pictures of the 9/11 jumpers bodies other than one grainy distant photo you can find here: http://************/3v68pr7 You can find pictures of people who have fallen a loss less of a distance and it is NOT pretty.

Imagine stomping on a mouse and the ensuing mess. Now imagine a 200 lb person getting stomped by a giant concrete foot @ 150 miles per hour. You'd know it was a person, but that would be about it.

edit: apparently I can't post a tiny url

The documentary that was done by a lone guy who was following a squad and they ended up in the lobby of the first tower was powerful. Every few seconds (OK, maybe 30) you would hear a very loud, strange, thump. It was the jumpers hitting the street outside.

If you haven't seen that documentary you should, it was quite good. (Sorry, but I don't remember what it was called.)

Interesting. I was mainly thinking of stories I'd heard from people who had to do body recovery after Pan Am 103 and TWA 800. From what I recall most of the bodies from those two tragedies were reasonably intact on the outside, but I guess they didn't hit concrete.

Two French brothers who happened to be making a documentary on the NYFD that day...

edit: they talk about the jumpers at the 36 minute mark

There was a case of someone who jumped to his death near where I used to work. By the time I left work, it was two hours past and the area had been cleaned up but the lingering smell reminded me strongly of a butcher market. I can only imagine how much gorish sight and sickening smell that assaulted those around the 9/11 site there and then.
