If its stuck on, they probably used a thermal pad instead of grease (paste). Heatsinks often come with a thermal pad. These are usually a rubbery solid at room temp, but melt at elevated temps when the CPU warms up. The pad solidifies quickly when you shut down. So if you let it heat up to max just before you shut down to take it off, and do it fast, it might come up easier. Look for "prime95" on the Internet. Running that program will heat the CPU near to max. Use a twisting motion to break the seal.

When you put it back on, you will need to scrape and clean off the remains (with rubbing alcohol.) And you will need some thermal grease to replace the heat sink.

Check in the CPU forum. It is a common question.

A better way would be to use a hairdryer to heat up the heatsink. Then SLOWLY twist it back and forth to loosen it. If the heatsink isn't moving, heat it up more. I almost had a heartattack when I ripped out the heatsink WITH the cpu still attached. A few pins were bent, but luckily the processor still works fine after I bent them back.

I got the same setup last week and was able to carefully lift up the heatsink with slight wiggling. The material that was there was sort of like putty. Got the 0547 week. Replaced the putty with some Arctic Silver. Been running at 290x9 @1.4V but temps jump up to 52C under load. It a good heatsink but it looks like I'm going to need something bigger if I really want to push the limits.

Just put in my order! I wonder how long it will take them to assemble everything, etc. And do they really load the most current BIOS? Ended up getting an Opteron 165, DFI Ultra-D, 2GB Patriot memory. I CAN'T wait!!

OEM means it's the chip only, no box and no heatsink/fan. I'm not sure what the warranty is on AMD OEMs. It might be 1 year, but correct me if I'm wrong. Anyways, I went with the 1 year warranty from Monarch just to be safe.

Buying retail is a waste of $$$ -- OEM is fine. I the posts above are mainly concerned that there is the potential they might receive a CPU that does not overclock very well (so someone returned it and someone not so ethical put it in the combo). Nobody has confirmed that is happening... Fears = fears.

I always buy OEM CPUs. I think the only time it might not have made sense was with the early Athlons which did not have well protected cores. Those were easy to damage. I don't think any current CPUs are like those were. I'm not very interested in over clocking though so that is my slant.

The Otpys all have 1 year OEM and 3 Retail warranties so you actually purchased a duplicate warranty from Monarch.

I don't belive they do. A warning message pops up if you buy an OEM chip with no heatsink letting you know they can't test your combo without a fan.

Anyone know why there are two OEM Opteron 165's listed on Monarch's site? Seems odd the same chip would have such a big price difference.

Seems they got rid of the opteron for $275 in the combo also. Damn monarch and their price raising crap.

Looks like they did. I hope that doesn't mean they had a batch of returned chips that they sold cheap for a couple weeks.

Funny, the retail chip is now cheaper than the OEM one.

Seems to be back in stock and they removed the other oem opteron for $330 and only show the opteron for $271 instead of $275 and I finally just bit and got one.

My combo shipped same day. Underestimated the power supply needed, so I haven't put it through it's paces yet.

Im stable at 310 x 9 which gives me 2800 mhz. Its running at 49 under a load and 28 idle ;). the cpu voltage is only at 1.4 too. I think I might be able to get some more out of this depending on what my motherboard will do

So is everyone still getting good results from Monarch, and hitting those 2.5s with their combos?
I noticed their retail went from 313 to 336 today.

I received the retail boxes for the mobo and the heatsink I ordered with it.

I received my combo mid last week and received an 0546 opty. I fear it was a return but I've been running stable at 2.4 GHz and haven't tried higher(yet). Temps at 2.4GHz are a little high at default VDD (CPU is at high 30's C with no load).

I got mine last Thursday OEM 165 with stepping ccbwe 0546. All the retail boxes, same day build and fedex actually delivered it in 2 days :0

Got mine up to 2.4 ghz so far with the cheap venus 7+ cooler. Will try more once I get an XP90 or Zalman 7700.

Make sure you call to verify stock. Monarch does not update the website in real time and it may take several days for you to find out if something is OOS when you order.
