Upcharge for onion rings?

It seems that anywhere I go to eat now that have onion rings as an option levvy an "upcharge" AND make you wait for them. I think this is bullshit. I am unaware of the onion and breading economy's apparent issues, but this is unacceptable. How did we onion ring lovers allow this to happen?
 
Should see the pathetic amount of onion rigs my local Sonic gives you with a burger and drink.I counted 4 the last time i went.So taboo these things and to get 4?
 
It's more expensive to make. I only buy onion rings if they're the large Vidalia onion type with a proper beer batter (no breading!). There's nothing worse than those minced onion rings you get from fast food places. Not a fan of those stringy ones either.

Yeah they are an upcharge pretty much everywhere, but it is definitely not always worth it. When they are good though, they are so freaking delicious. Love a good onion ring.

Any restaurant I've been to in NYC doesn't charge more for swapping out fries for something like it; sweet potato fries, onion rings, salad, mashed potato,.. but, baked potatoes they charge extra.

One place didn't even charge extra for truffle fries.

Now, they use to be a charge for a side swap,.. but, that went away about 10 years ago. Also, most places don't charge for refills on soft drinks either.

To offset my onion ring upcharge I usually purchase the smallest drink possible and when the cashier acts all "are you sure, it's pretty small" I just tell them "Yeah, I can fill it up as many times as I want, right?"

Truffle fries are a bit of a scam. They have a bottle of oil in the back that may have a slice of truffle in it, and then they drizzle some on your fries (and sometimes sprinkle a little Parmesan on it). When the oil bottle is empty they just fill it back up. That poor truffle slice might be a year old and still be in use!

I am against giant fries as well. Needs to be a proper surface area to center or they are mushy in the middle or hard as a rock.

Ugh, hate a steak fry. Those giant thick things are gross, may as well just give me a baked potato so I can put sour cream, bacon, and chives on it.

Look, the rule is, if it is deep fried in oil it is good, no matter how bad it is. Mushy, greasy, soggy steak fry? Still better than broccoli.
 
I charge more for onion rings.
Cost/Labor of running a potato though a fry press = $ .21 per oz
Cost/Labor of cutting, separating, breading an onion ring = $.98 per oz.
As you can see, making onion rings clearly costs more.
Even the pre-made frozen kind cost 3-4x as much compared to fries.
 
Ohhh steak fries are delicious!

I also don't like crispy fries either, so that may be part of the reason I enjoy steak fries, on a similar scale, home fries.

Maybe, but I just find most of them flavourless. I'm generally not a huge fry guy to begin with, but when I have them I prefer something thinner thank a steak fry.

I love broccoli. I'd rather eat broccoli than a steak fry. Broccoli tempura is one of my favourite things.

Veggies are good as a side,.. with the right meal. I don't see myself eating broccoli with a burger, but with a steak or chicken breast - sure.
