Its just sliced onions and breading dipped in oil, right?

Onion rings are an art. They have to be peeled right, sliced uniformly perpendicular to the root, separated to insure none of the rings have that film layer, dipped in a liquid, dipped in batter, dipped in a second different liquid, dipped in final batter, chilled to allow batter to setup, and finally deep fried to perfection which requires collecting rings of equal size and watching them, it's not a set a timer and ding they are done like fries.

Fries are stupid, of course onion rings cost more.

Maybe, but I just find most of them flavourless. I'm generally not a huge fry guy to begin with, but when I have them I prefer something thinner thank a steak fry.

KT

You're eating bad steak fries.

Steak fries are amazing because they preserve the flavor of the potato better than normal fries.

This thread gave me the idea of trying out some ranch dressing as an onion ring dip. I am now obsessed with the idea.

It's more expensive to make. I only buy onion rings if they're the large Vidalia onion type with a proper beer batter (no breading!). There's nothing worse than those minced onion rings you get from fast food places. Not a fan of those stringy ones either.

I'll be damned if you're going to tell me that shoe-string rings are unacceptable, you son of a bitch.

shoe string rings are fine if they are beer battered. Breading doest work well on onion rings when thin or ever.

I've had the thin ones done in cornmeal and they were amazing. Good rings really depends on a lot of different things.

I'm not quit as annoyed with the upsell as I am when there is no mention that my choice was an upsell. "I'd like the number 6 please?" (or whichever number it was) "Did you want regular fries, curly fries, or onion rings with that?" "Hey, onion rings sound pretty good!" Next thing I know, my meal was over $10. "How'd it come to so much?" "The onion rings cost extra." It had been a few years since I had eaten at an Arby's. It'll be a few more years before I return.

Must be a United States of America thing.

We've got a lot of Irish in us--we just love potato.

You guys have to pour gravy and (the worst part of) cheese all over potatoes just to make them tolerable to your semi-frenchie palate.

We've lost focus here on onion rings, but I will weigh in on the fries discussion now and hope that we can get back to onion ring upcharge discussion.

1) Steak fries are delicious, however, as they are higher in actual potato content they are better served with additional toppings akin to a baked potato. Cheese, bacon, etc., make steak fries better. They don't stand alone with ketchup/catsup as well.

2) All other fries are sufficient as well, work better with ketchup/catsup but should NOT be used in the form of cheese fries, etc., as they simply turn into a soggy, jumbled mess that must be eaten with a fork to begin to enjoy them. Weak.

Thus, let it be said that onion rings are the better option and that the needless upcharge, especially for shitty onion rings, should be abolished.

Ive tried corn meal a few times and its ok but a little overpowering to me. I like to taste the onion not breading. I am weird I know.

Yeah they are an upcharge pretty much everywhere, but it is definitely not always worth it. When they are good though, they are so freaking delicious. Love a good onion ring.

KT

agree, not worth it.

smaller amount than the fries it replaces.

now if there's a small upcharge for an order of onion rings IN ADDITION to the fries, then hell yeas!
but nowhere I go does that.

and nowadays, with restaurants offering unlimited sweet potatoe fries (red robin/applebees), it's definitely not worth it for onion rings.
