FML. I went to the AT&T store today because I needed a new sim card and then it works nicely. I get service, cool... then the guy restarts the phone. It won't reboot properly. Just hangs at the apple, forever.

Tried to boot into DFU mode and it won't get detected in redsn0w. I hate this. I don't want to erase everything I had on here. D': But it seems that's what I'll have to do.

EDIT: Finally got it into DFU mode. Everything is back to normal, I think.

Fuck that took quite a few tries.

Can't wait for iOS 4.3 and then an untethered jailbreak for that. :p

I couldn't wait anymore for this fabled untethered jailbreak. I finally jumped through all the hoops and restored with 4.1. As an added bonus, I don't get randomly thrown into the wrong text messages when I unlock now. Hooray!

5 icon dock, SBSettings and IntelliScreen. God I missed them sooooo much.

Idk. I have a tethered jailbreak, but seriously... I've rebooted my phone ONCE in the last like three or four weeks. And that was only because the AT&T guy who put the new sim card in it did it. He only did it because it's policy, but I should've just stopped him.

can you respring a tethered JB without needing a pc/mac? is it just a full reboot that's the problem?

You can get an untethered JB with the newest beta of Redsnow but it uses the beta kernal of 4.2 or 4.3. It's really not a big deal but I had no issues with 4.1 and the features provided in 4.2 weren't anything worth keeping. That's why I downgraded back to 4.1.

I'm not sure about the respring question. Maybe someone else knows. Either that or you can just give it a shot and see!

Yeah, it restarts springboard every time I install just about anything from Cydia... so, it doesn't need to be tethered for that. Full reboot needs tether.

Well shit, if I had known that I probably would have stayed on 4.2. Oh well.

The 3G is pwned for life. Just run Redsn0w and you're set.

When I still had my 3G, it was pretty terrible with 4.0. I sold my 3G before I could upgrade the firmware but 4.1 and 4.2 helped a little with performance but I can't say from experience. With the 3G, I dont think there'd be much holding me back from downgrading.

I downloaded and ran Redsn0w v0.9.2 but it's asking me for the "corresponding IPSW for my current firmware" as i mentione before i think my current firmware verison is 4.2.1 and the only related file i am offered where i downloaded redsn0w is iPhone 3G 3.1.2 ipsw Download should i download and install this firmware?
You're using the wrong version of Redsn0w (0.9.2 is very old). You want 0.9.6rc8

https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_mac_0.9.6rc8.zip?attredirects=0&d=1

Use the 4.2.1 iPhone 3G firmware blob with it.

Can redsn0w cook a firmware for ATV2 the same way it does for the other iOS devices? I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about this, but I can't really find any good Windows resources.

That is an excellent question. I would love to be able to reboot my Apple TV without tethering.

Can you guys comment on 4.2.1 firmware performance on the 3G? Tempted to downgrade.

It's still slow as molasses IMO. There are some speed boosts over 4.0. Still, I found the Maps app to be almost unusable. Given that it really adds nothing useful beyond merged mailboxes, going back to iOS 3 is the best way to go.

Gonna stick with my iPhone 4 then. If only they will release the 4.2.1. untethered/unlock

Shit that is a big file and the download link sucks, I've spent the last 2 days trying to download it without success, the download speed is too damn slow and after a couple of hours downloading the connection is dropped

I've looked for other sources of this file but there are none and to top things off Jdownloader does not recognize the download link

damn this is frustrating, anyone know of an alternate download link?

I think it's you, Dude. I'm downloading that file right now, and the speed is bouncing between 2.2MB/s and 2.5MB/s.
