Untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 on the way

When Apple released iOS 4.2.1 last month, it was already possible to jailbreak any iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running the operating system using the Redsn0w jailbreak utility. There’s just one problem: Redsn0w provides a tethered jailbreak, which means that any time you want to reboot your iOS device you need to connect it to a computer using a USB cable. The same is true if your phone battery dies.

But now it looks like an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 is coming soon. Famed hacker MuscleNerd has posted a video showing a jailbroken iPod touch 4th generation rebooting. There are no wires anywhere in sight, but after rebooting MuscleNerd opens the Cydia store and other apps that are only available on jailbroken devices.

The new tools aren’t available yet, but when they are you’ll probably be able to find instructions at the iPhone Dev Team blog.

It's half a hack. They're using one of the old 4.2 beta kernels (which is vulnerable to a known exploit) with the 4.2.1 userland. It's not a true 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Where is this? I've been bouncing to the devteam blog for a while and no new news on the matter.

It hasn't been released yet AFAIK. Comex says a jailbreak is due by Christmas; I'm not sure if it's a true 4.2.1 jailbreak, or uses the 4.2b3 kernel.

That's kind of disappointing. It's been out for quite a while and didn't even make many sweeping changes from 4.1.

you mean side from patching the untethered portion of the JB? Besides, if there weren't that many 'sweeping changes, what's your hurry?

After the last update my battery has been lasting a fraction of the time and broke local push notifications. I'm looking for fixes apart from features.

This jailbreaking thing for iOS 4.2.1 on my iPhone 4 is such a PITA. It obviously could be worse, but I have to fucking open Redsn0w every time I want to reboot? And it reboots a lot...

not sure what mods you run off cydia but the only time i've had to reboot my phone is when i screwed up and that's mostly cydia talking.

if you are just running the basics - you should be 100% stable 100% of the time otherwise your phone has issues.

Well yeah... that's what this whole thread is about. There's not an untethered jailbreak yet, and the dev team warned everybody about what a tethered jailbreak means. It's pretty silly to bitch about something you knew you were getting into.

I've had to reboot 3 or 4 times so far after updating and installing shit. I just expect that it'll be many more times now.

Btw, any good apps from Cydia? So far I am not seeing ANYTHING I am wanting like flash support in Safari, wireless tethering for data...

You need to add more repos to cydia for some apps, like frash:
http://www.ithinkdiff.com/install-flash-frash-easily-on-your-iphone-3g3gs4-with-a-cydia-repo-21232/

There's five icon dock, wifi sync, winterboard with themes, sbsettings, biteSMS, lockinfo, markread, etc etc etc

FYI, in case anyone hasn't seen it, the Plan B jailbreak is out in the newest versions of Redsn0w. It uses 4.2.1 with the 4.2b3 kernel. It's still in beta, so YMMV.

Comex is still working on a proper 4.2.1. jailbreak.

Any other great repos for FREE apps? (Seems everything in Cydia is paid or trialware)

Most of what I use is free. sbsettings, five icon dock, winterboard, and frash are all free. biteSMS is free ad based but the way I use it I never once see an ad. There's other free repos but they're not legal to talk about here, so just google "best cydia repos" and you should find a few to add.

Still hard to figure out what's any decent and works on my iPhone 4 4.2.1, but I've found some useful stuff. Although I tried using one app and it crashes immediately on launch. Ugh. It's supposed to be awesome too.

Which one? Or what does it do? Some apps have a few clones throughout cydia so if one doesn't work, another might. You're also at the mercy of the developer, so if they decide to not update their app with new firmwares you're screwed. I lost one of my favorite apps when ios4 came out. The dev just didn't want to mess with it anymore.

It's IntelliScreen. For some reason it just crashes on start of the app. :/ Totally lame.

Well there's the few I mentioned earlier, but to add on to it:

yourtube 2: Paid app that adds a download button in the youtube app. Lets you watch them offline either through youtube or you can add the vids to your ipod library.

wi-fi sync: Paid app that tricks itunes into thinking the USB cable is connected, but you're on wifi. You download a small program on your desktop and keep it running at all times, then when you're running itunes you enter the app on your phone and it connects. Allows you to sync, backup, whatever you want but obviously slower than USB.

Glasklart HD: Free theme for use with winterboard. It's the theme I use and I think it's the best by far.

Mark Read: Paid app that lets you select multiple emails and mark them as read/unread. Something that Apple has no excuse for not including by default after so many years... but here we are.

SwitcherMod: free changes how the app switcher functions. By default the app switcher shows all the icons of the last apps you visited, regardless of if they're still running or not. This lets you hide the icons that aren't running, so it's like a task switcher. Also lets you enable the "delete" button by default so you don't have to hold the icons and wait for them to enable the delete buttons.
