This is one of my favorites as well, compares only to half life. The amazing part is that I played it after beating UT at next to the highest difficulty level and I still found times were Unreal was very challenging. I had less problems with half life long before I when though the paces of UT.

And this game does have some great lighting and reflections not found in even Unreal II. I found myself several times shooting at my own reflection or taking advantage of mirrors. And in the dark I can use the flashlight or my primary guns to light up the place.

But my absolute favorite part were the gigantic maps. I sometimes spend several hours exploring every part I could get to and I really like being able to sneak up on enemies from almost any position very realistically. Something that is definitely not found in today's games.

The return to na pali mission pack is worth playing through also, although it seems a bit more rough than unreal was. it adds a couple of new weapons too

Return to Na Pali is next after i beat this game.

Right now, I'm at, hmmm, I got all the weapons. I finished the bell tower bit, if anyone rememebers. Now I'm pretty much search for levers to unlock different sections of the level.

I'm gonna call it a night though. Maybe finish it tomorrow.

Actually, for both Unreal and Unreal Tournament D3D is crap on anything newer than a GF3 really, and OGL is fine if you use the newer UT renderer that's available. ;)

The game runs best under the latest unofficial OpenGL renderer.
I dont have that as an API selection, just D3D Glide Software. Where can I get this UT OpenGL thing.

Or do you guys think I should just install my Voodoo5 and play in in Glide. I'm gonna be playing Quake 2 plus both expansions right after Unreal Gold.

I was just messing around with this game the other day and it is still great. Definitely a classic, crazy that 5 years later, the graphics are still good.

Awesome game, looked sweet on a Voodoo2, sweeter on a Voodoo 5 5500, and sweet on a Radeon 9600 Pro. Ahead of its' time.

Someone mentioned in another thread that Half-life was the first to have enemies fighting against enemies. Unreal was the first.

I loaded Unreal w/ the last official patch. Is there any additional patches to enhance things, like EAX? It ran very smooth without errors in D3D. It brought back many memories, like when the light go out one by one and the Skarj comes out in the dark.

That honor would actually go to the first Quake.

Nope, that honour goes to Doom (or was it Doom 2). I distinctly remember those pink demons attacking those brown fireball hurling things. I though that was cool at the time - total chaos.

If there's one thing I miss in modern shooters it's cannon fodder. I loved the way in Doom 2 you could take down a squad of zombie soldiers with one well placed double barelled shotgun blast. No game since then has managed to create such as satisfying sensation of instantly gratifying carnage. Except maybe the roadkill in Carmageddon 1/2.

Back to Unreal - I loved it. Never spent so much time just gazing at the scenery as I did when I first played Unreal. My favourite FPS of all time goes to System Shock 2 though. More of an RPG really, but if anyone here hasn't played it - WHY? - you're really missing out. Playing that game in the dark is the most unnerving brown-trouser experience I've ever had. Best villain in video game history too.

Yes, the cleverness of the AI to dodge, shoot, retreat, and counter attack do impress me as well.
Yes the AI certainly was impressive, especially the standard Skaarj. They used rocks, trees and hills to their advantage and also their rolling dodges were great to watch.

Right now, I'm at, hmmm, I got all the weapons. I finished the bell tower bit, if anyone rememebers
The Canyon Lake Monastery mission is one of the best levels I've ever seen, period. The architecture, flow and design of that map is amazing. Actually all of the Unreal maps are masterpieces but that one truly shines.

Where can I get this UT OpenGL thing.
You can get it from Old Unreal. Don't bother with your Voodoo5/Glide combination.

Yeah and Marathon too. Possibly Pathways into Darkness too.

Try both editions of Serious Sam. You'll be amazed at how many enemies are thrown at you and how quickly you can mow them down. Both games are pretty much just about mowing down hordes of enemies.

It'll run but IIRC you need copy some of the movie files across manually.

For UT Metal looked better with the Hi-Res Textures, but I'm not sure if Unreal had those Textures.

If you are talking about the one at Old Unreal, it kinda sucks. There are changing textures. It's also a little darker.

For brown-trouser experience, I personally vote Aliens Vs. Predator 1/2 as a Marine. Although nothing could capture the terror of really seeing an acid-dripping alien running towards you at 70mph ready to rip your head off and feast on your insides.... it came damn close.

**blip** **blip** -prepares for the worst- **blip** **blip** -pulse rifle shots- **AAAAAHHHH** -silence-

Couple the 'motion-scanner effect' with the darkness and eeriness of the situation the marine is in then you know what true terror is....

As for Unreal, I never played it personally. I was young when it was released (19 now) and didnt have a powerful enough machine to play it.

add surround sound to that too ;) and you got true horror, honestly the AvP games costed me at least two years of my life.

Both. They caused me severe bouts of brown-pants syndrome whilst playing the Marine levels.

As I said, hearing that motion scanner.... hearing the scream... seeing a black, acid-dripping alien running at you like an express train wanting to rip your head off ... having only 2 seconds at most to react and blast is insanely frightening. Bearing in mind that ammo is limited.... light is a rare and valueable commodity and that both sides can rip each other apart in milliseconds. Probably takes 2 pulse rifle bullets or so to down an alien if you hit them right. Not even clipping their arms or a leg off will stop them trying to kill you.

Lights off, quiet surroundings, quality surround sound, playable frames and decent graphics level.... its a question of "Am I hunting or am I being hunted?"

Yes, that's what I said. Just use the renderer without the textures and it'll work fine (I don't use the textures either because they completely change the game.
