Unreal II performance

Anyone else play this game? I read reviews when it first came out that said it was a big chugger, and ran choppy even on medium settings. I picked it up the other day and I msut say I rarely ever get a frame drop below 30fps, everything is on high except I have disabled shadows and play at 800x600. Even at a low resolution it's still a beautiful game. Oh yes I'm also using a GF3 Ti500 w/64MB and an XP 2400+@2.1ghz

Unreal 2 runs like total ass compared to UT2003. The new patch helps tremendously but it still dips lower than it should.

Most people play at 1024x768 or higher, I'm not sure how much of the game you've played through, in my opinion it's a great game with magnificent graphics, that hence cause subpar performance, not a problem with the engine, it's just very nice graphics 🙂, durring battles and stuff my system which was a 1700+ XP 512mb ram, ti4400 chugged while i played in action scenes, i havnt tried it with my new athlonxp 2.3ghz nforce 2 setup yet, but same vid card so im not sure how much faster it'd be, my system is about 20fps faster on botmatch for UT2003 though, so i think the CPU will give it a nice boost 🙂

yeah. the u2 is pretty choppy at times. ESPECIALLY when the foe dies, it slows down immensely (?!), but then in a sec it runs smooth again? And for some reason Atlantis inside is running slow...

Yeah, I have an XP2500 @ 2.2 Ghz and a Ti4200 @ 325/650 and with all details set to max, 1024x768x32, no shadows, 2X AA, EAX, and I get 30-80 fps depending on where I am and what I'm looking at.

Ran fine on my system, but the only eye candy I had turned on was 1280x1024.. no AA or Aniso.

It's a boring game though. 😛

Yes it is... I just beat it on the normal difficulty level and was really disappointed at how short it is... especially since it comes on 2 CD's... in SoF2 I was thinking "is this ever going to end?" I haven't seen a good ending to a game in a long time... BF1942 ending sucked... nothing special, just no more new battles. SoF2 ending sucked. Serious Sam ending was ok, but could have been better. Haven't finished Ghost Recon but I doubt it'll be any better than BF1942.

When the foe dies, it might be the Karma physics engine kicking in using up the CPU that slows the game down a bit as it works out what the foe does as it dies. Maybe you could try it with physics turned down? (if that's still an option)

I think it might just be loading the animation of the creature dying... cause they move in ways that they don't usually move when they die. I don't have the same problem, but I just thought I'd throw out a possibility.

I've pretty much played through the whole game. I'm at the part where they put the pieces together and they turn whatever the hell it is into a huge thing and it breaks out and kills the two other guards and I'm trappe din the room with it. Anyways, while it is a boring game, I was really impressed by the Alien level where you ge the final piece of the artifact. The way they used the colors with the blue and black and everything. I'm really happy that my compute ris able to handle this game though.

Before up upgraded my Palimino 1700 to a Barton 2800, I quit playing it at the first artifact(was getting too choppy). After the upgrade I decided to try it again and what a difference it made! Other than the cpu everything else was the same.

I really liked Unreal 2, the story seemed solid and didn't drag out too long. AAAAAIIIIIIDAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! 🙁 🙂

The gameplay is a bit simplistic though, I would've liked some puzzles rather then go to this level kill everything you see go to next level kill everything you see. I really hope they release some expansion packs for this baby, it's such a beautiful game I hate to see it just end.

I think we might see some user made levels/stories, but whehther Epic will make an expansion is questionable. They certaily could, maybe they'll give us an Xmas present! 🙂

playing U2 now ... the graphics are pretty nice, but the game isnt one that keeps me interested for long. if i have nuthin to do ... maybe a few minutes, clear a level or something

they are currently developing Unreal 2004.

the animation of the creature dieing is controlled by the physics engine... you just repeated what the above poster said in a different way...

As I understand it, that's Unreal Tournament, not Unreal.

planescape: torment's ending is great, especially whe you can choose 3 of em.

3 different endings??! You sure? How? I've beaten the game many times in 99 (havent played it since then) - and got only 1 cutscene: what can change the nature of a man (apparently, regret does). Oooh....you're not talking about the cutscene 😉 . I got excited, dug out good ol' PT. I love music and philosophies presented in PT. BG kicks ass too.

As for unreal II - the story line is ass. I wish there was an alternative ending where Aida and Isaac live, and Marshal falls in love with Naban. Dorian Gray as a flagship? Lol, name a ship in name o demented gay murderer? Awkward. Story line sure does suck BUT the texture/eyecandy part is awesome and unmatched. The dev's did a great job.
SoF2 - is quite long. And its ending is awkward. I didnt like it.
BF1942 - no comment
Enter the matrix: please, i thought i had it with square wheels. DX9 - B*** please. Enter the MAtrix ending is just a mofin bunch of scenes from MAtrix3! Played. But game tells you a lot that movie didnt. like what the hell Niobi was (or what her name) and that asian dude doing. Thank God i payed 4 bux for it. (like for everuything else! no matter the title 2$ for CD. This one came on 2DVD's hence 2x2 = 4)

Theres a game that gets "Squids kick-ass ending of the year' - Warcraft III: frozen throne. It almost made me cry!!! Needless to say, WCIII without frozen throne addon is booty. Unless they change the ending (cuz i got a pre-release (how do u think i got it in May)) - it rox!

Anyone still playing the unpatched version of the game should be downloading and installing the patch right now. In some cases it doubles the performance of the game.

As for the actual game, it was pretty average but it could have been a lot better. There was nothing compelling about the game that wanted me to continue playing it. Some of the levels were good but they were far and few between. Also the ending was also lame and some of the weapons were fiddly and underpowered.

in my opinion it's a great game with magnificent graphics, that hence cause subpar performance, not a problem with the engine, it's just very nice graphics 🙂
Unreal 2 has inferior visuals and inferior performance to UT2003. UT2003 runs faster and looks much better too. Some of those CTF and deathmatch maps in UT2003 are simply jaw-dropping and have absolutely no equivalent in Unreal 2.

It's a problem with how Legend modified the UT2003 engine, specifically with how ridiculously CPU limited it is.

ESPECIALLY when the foe dies, it slows down immensely (?!), but then in a sec it runs smooth again?
The ragdoll physics are CPU intensive. Turn them off and you'll see better performance.
