Which engine did Red Orchestra get?
Unreal 2.5, the same as UT2k4.
That was actually Unreal 2. Unreal 2.5 was an Xbox-optimized version of Unreal 2.
Regarding the UT series: I think Epic needs to let that cash cow out to pasture for a couple years. It doesn't have the spark it used to. If they backed off it for a bit, developed a new IP, and then came back to it with a fresh take in 4 or 5 years, I think it'd have a chance.
The problem with the Unreal franchise is that it lived up to its name when it was first released. The graphics obviously played a part in the "unreality", but we'd also never had weapons like the BioRifle, ASMD, and Razojack before. It was a pretty cool new take on the concept, and they gave us a nice loooooong single player game in an alien but beautiful world.
Now here we are four games on. The BioRifle is a known staple in shooters, along with the ASMD. The level design is no longer fresh - it's the refined UT template that they have honed over the years.
Original IPs are necessary to keep things interesting. Christ, even VALVE, with the most unquestionably powerful brand name in PC Gaming, realized the value in essentially assimilating and supporting the Portal team, and look what they've gotten from it. Almost everyone agrees that the landmark PC game of 2007 was Portal. They're working on a sequel, or next episode, or whatever the hell it is that Valve makes these days, and with good reason. I'll be there day 1, unlocking it on their digital wonder-service after giving them the agreed upon number of monies.
Epic rolled out a nice new IP in Gears, but it was console centric in its purpose and that shows. I'm sure they'll do very well with the series, as they have done with the Unreal franchise on the PC, but they can't keep beating this dead horse on the PC and not come up with something new. I think UT3's lukewarm reception was a wake-up call to that. It's the first Unreal title I have not enjoyed and don't plan to purchase.
