Good riddance, I say.

QFT. Everything based on it has been mediocre or shit, with Epic spectacularly managing to make the worst of the bunch.

No, PCs are not being left out entirely, they're just last in line and there's an honest chance you'll never see a UE4 game on the PC. PC game developers may choose to ignore UE4 entirely if a more PC-centric game engine is readily available.

PC gamers are now the red-headed stepchild and Epic is probably hoping they'll be so successful with the console engine they won't need to bother with the last in line.

That is very true. The consoles would have priority. They are still coding for the PC. They are simply targeting the consoles when it comes to features and performance. If it works well and looks good I'm all for it.

This is no surprise. They've recently gone out of their way to say that they don't want to develop for the PC anymore. There will be other companies to take up the slack though.

UE3 was actually a pretty good engine. It looked good while still running well on a wide range of hardware. Bioshock and UT3 are probably some of the best optimized FPSs I've seen recently in terms of performance, leaving aside whatever flaws there are in the games themselves.

As others have said, this is not a surprise. I don't think much has changed at all... Epic has been targeting console first for a while now, this is not a new plan.

The entire UE3 generation has been console-focused for them... Gears of War was console exclusive for most of its life and UT3 was clearly developed for consoles in mind and then ported over to the PC.

It's not too much of a loss at this point, for me Unreal Engine 3 was not very good and certainly Epic's recent games have been lackluster. UE3 does not impress me with its graphics, the only good thing that can be said about it is excellent performance, but the Source engine performs even better and looks great with the recent upgrades.

I'm sure Epic will enjoy financial success on the consoles, but they should know that the reason their recent games have not sold well on the PC has little to do with piracy or the death of PC gaming- it's because their recent games have been badly ported to the PC and their games no longer target the PC audience.

I just hope that games will eventually go back to focusing on gameplay over graphics, which I fear may never happen. Gamers are only going to play the same game so many times before they eventually catch on.

Secondly, I support Epic's move away from the PC. If people aren't buying PC games, then there's no point in the wasting cash developing for it. Love it or hate it, console gaming is going to continue to get bigger and PC gaming is going to continue to diminish. I used to be a hardcore PC gamer. It's rare that I buy a PC game these days. My current rig is probably the last rig I'll build for gaming.

BZZT wrong answer.

The pc will always be the home of the RTS and FPS game. With companies like blizzard pumping out awesome games and valve with their great games and steam pc gaming is doing ok. When EA goes bankrupt i think pc gaming will be on the rise again. Theres also plenty of other developers that make quality games for the pc.

PC gaming is just going through a transitional phase where new developers or lesser known ones are replacing those who were trashed by EA. Apart from that... its fine, pc is a great gaming platform.

You seem very confident that they will, why do you think this?

Unreal Tournament 3 has sold over 1 million copies, yet only .34 million are console sales. The PC has clearly outsold the PS3 version.

Is the PS3 in disarray, too many console pirates, or maybe console gaming is dying? What's their excuse now? Maybe they're jumping ship a little too early since PS3 owners think UT3 sucks even more than PC gamers thought it sucked.

I think they've let GoW go to their heads. After only 1 successful console game they are now some Prima Donna console fanboys.

That ain't a big deal, we still have id Software, Valve and Crytek, and UT3 has basically failed on the PC market so... yeah.

So, they're targeting their next engine at consoles that won't exist for 5 years bare minimum, possibly much longer, including a possible nintendo console that even nintendo doesn't know about yet?

Sheesh, you would think the nostradamuses they've got working there could've clued em in to how much UT3 was going to suck.

I think the easiest conclusion to draw is that Unreal Tournament has, up to this point, been a franchise associated with the PC, so I doubt there was nearly as much anticipation for the title on other platforms. PC Gamers know what UT is. Console gamers, might, maybe, perhaps, have a vague idea.

I don't think Epic is weeping, either way, over 1mil+ sales.

How do you define success? The licensure numbers tell a vastly different story, and I don't really think the technical capabilities are terribly different between the different options. This isn't like the old days where Unreal had 32-bit color and Quake II was still only 16-bit. The differences between engines these days are nuanced at best.

They will soon fade away into the massive sea of other console developers and no one will care what they say or do anymore.Good bye epic.

Honestly, I can't remember the last title these guys put out that I cared about. As someone else said, the original Unreal will always stand alone as their greatest achievement. Other than possibly UT99, it's been all downhill since then. Plenty of other engines are out there and someone will step up and take their place if they are foolish enough to go console only. No loss for me.

Do we really need to listen to EPIC anymore? GoW sucked, xbox 360 whores liked it because they're 12 year olds, etc.

Why do we have to pay attention to these people anymore? They once contributed to the PC, but they don't anymore, they make sucky n00b games and the only reason they keep making retarded comments is because tools keep listening to them.

Sheesh, you would think the nostradamuses they've got working there could've clued em in to how much UT3 was going to suck.

They knew before releasing it, how much it would suck, at least out of the box (the community and their mods and mutators always eventually save the day, same thing happened with UT2004, let's not forget about that). The thing is that they still released it because they also knew that, at least, the Console kids would buy it and they'd make "decent" money out of it, since as we know it most Consoles games suck since the past couple of years but those kids still buy that crap, so what would oblige a developer to make a quality game if all they need is to do the less amount of efforts possible to sell crappy products? The engine itself though is quite capable, it's just not fully exploited as always. It's like if you'd order a pizza but you never end up eating it completely wasting money and resources (maybe not the best analogy but that's how I see it).

We consumers have our responsibilities to take too. Do we prefer quality games? Well, ok, but if we prefer those then let's all stop whining when a game is delayed and let's all stop buying crap like the latest fast-food offers such as BF2142. As long as we keep buying crap, they'll make crap for us to buy. It's simple. But at least we still have a few dedicated developers for us, focused on making original products, such as Valve Software, GSC GameWorld and 2K Boston/Australia, and a few others.

Which engine did Red Orchestra get?

Unreal 2.5, the same as UT2k4.

That was actually Unreal 2. Unreal 2.5 was an Xbox-optimized version of Unreal 2.

Regarding the UT series: I think Epic needs to let that cash cow out to pasture for a couple years. It doesn't have the spark it used to. If they backed off it for a bit, developed a new IP, and then came back to it with a fresh take in 4 or 5 years, I think it'd have a chance.

The problem with the Unreal franchise is that it lived up to its name when it was first released. The graphics obviously played a part in the "unreality", but we'd also never had weapons like the BioRifle, ASMD, and Razojack before. It was a pretty cool new take on the concept, and they gave us a nice loooooong single player game in an alien but beautiful world.

Now here we are four games on. The BioRifle is a known staple in shooters, along with the ASMD. The level design is no longer fresh - it's the refined UT template that they have honed over the years.

Original IPs are necessary to keep things interesting. Christ, even VALVE, with the most unquestionably powerful brand name in PC Gaming, realized the value in essentially assimilating and supporting the Portal team, and look what they've gotten from it. Almost everyone agrees that the landmark PC game of 2007 was Portal. They're working on a sequel, or next episode, or whatever the hell it is that Valve makes these days, and with good reason. I'll be there day 1, unlocking it on their digital wonder-service after giving them the agreed upon number of monies.

Epic rolled out a nice new IP in Gears, but it was console centric in its purpose and that shows. I'm sure they'll do very well with the series, as they have done with the Unreal franchise on the PC, but they can't keep beating this dead horse on the PC and not come up with something new. I think UT3's lukewarm reception was a wake-up call to that. It's the first Unreal title I have not enjoyed and don't plan to purchase.

Moar EPIC FAIL.

I used to be a big Epic fanboi up until about 3-4 months ago.

Since then, they've proceeded to enrage every one of their most dedicated userbase :frown: :|

This is all about piracy levels being much lover at console market. I wouldn't first want to make something that's gonna be pirated 5:1 or whatever ratio is.

I sometimes wonder if the PC version of games are selling poor due to the fact that they almost always released a console version of the game FIRST! Seriously, how do they know that that many people are pirating the game in the first place? Maybe no one is playing it because they've already played it on the console that came out months in advanced. For me one example would be Assassins Creed, it's not even out on the PC yet and I've played it a bit on the console so feel no need to buy it to play the same game on the PC. I bet ya they're gonna complain how low the sales is because of pirates. Its just as easy to pirate a game on the xbox360 as it is on the PC.
