Unplugging the Kinect (Xbone)

So, what happens if you disconnect the Kinect from the Xbox One console? Will it refuse to work? Will it not connect to XBL? I have no interest in the One if the requirement is the Kinect must be connected (and unobstructed).
 
absolutely nothing happens and it functions fine without it. this was made clear about a month or two after e3 last year.
 
The biggest down side is that you have to manually log in your profile each time. If you have Kinect connected, it recognizes you as you walk in the room, and loads your profile. But if there's no Kinect, you have to do it yourself.

Hopefully, they'll put in the option to auto-login, like the 360 had. I'm guessing they eventually will, but I haven't seen it on MS's radar.
 
Microsoft made Kinect non-mandatory after people freaked out about it always watching and listening. Victims of bad timing, as it was when the NSA scandal first broke.
 
Well, thanks all for the replies. mmntech, it is still mandatory in terms of forced purchase, though. Which is exactly what M$ wanted. Force people to buy stuff they didn't want.
 
they actually aren't forcing you to buy anything.

i know i know, tough concept to grasp, especially for many on this board.
 
Buying 4 Eneloops and a charger on Amazon's $18. So, you're at $468. It's basically the same price as whatever you get for the PS4, except you have a much-better set of batteries...and spares.

Great deal for those that want the game.

Meh deal for those that don't. If it were a physical copy at least people could resell it more easily, and for a higher price.

A positive for the XB1 that people don't talk about is you CAN sell the Kinect2 out of the box and recoup a good % of cash.

I do expect a $399 console with bundled items come fall, which basically everyone told me I was crazy for way back in the pre-launch days

"Oh you're an idiot if you think they'll cut the price for the first few years" / etc.

Who is the idiot now? I've predicted everything that's come to pass, and I've been in the industry since before many of these people were even glimmers in their parents eyes.
 
Well, in fairness, they also have a Forza bundle for the One, plus the European FIFA bundle. And, really, if you don't want Titanfall OR Forza, why are you even getting a One?

I've debating selling my Kinect on Ebay, but even though it's sitting in the closest next to Natal, I can't pull myself to part with an original part of the SKU haha.
 
My kinect has been unplugged since the day I got my xb1, and everything works just fine. Like others said the biggest thing is that I have to press up and over to sign in as opposed to the kinect signing me in. Also you can't shout out "xbox record that" if something cool happens in-game.

Not sure if I got a magical Xbox or perhaps it's been that long since I turned it on, I honestly don't remember having to pick a profile to log into. Box just turns on and I'm ready to go. Then again, my system only has one profile setup. EDIT: And my Kinect is disconnected too, in case that piece of info was missed.

Now, PS4, jesus I got to sign in every time the damn controller turns off. Them precious seconds are adding up!
 
I have one profile on my xb1 but I can assure you that if my kinect doesn't recognize me that I will have to log in manually.

The console will function but you won't be logged in automatically.

That just goes to show how often I use the thing for any online activity.

I still unlock achievements though, so I know my profile is logged into the system. I'll have to test today, but pretty sure I got a few updates to download.
