A 19-year-old Oakland woman facing at least two counts of manslaughter after a crash Monday night that killed two people, including a pregnant woman, is also facing a charge of unlicensed driving
According a California Highway Patrol spokesman, the crash occurred at 11:11 p.m. on Interstate Highway 580 near the Altamont Pass in Alameda County, just east of North Flynn Road, when Laurin Heggie looked back to speak to a rear passenger.
Heggie reportedly was driving a 1988 Buick at 72 mph. CHP Officer Steve Creel said Heggie, who has a driving permit, had two 18-year-olds in the car though her permit requires that she drive with a person much older.
As the Buick began to drift out of its lane, it sideswiped a 1996 Ford. The Ford rolled over several times before coming to rest in two lanes of traffic, the CHP reported.
The 24-year-old driver, identified by the CHP as Marlinda Grable of Modesto, was killed. Her 20-year-old passenger, Christopher Solano of Modesto, also died.
Grable's 7-year-old son and a 17-year-old suffered minor injuries in the crash, Creel said.
Grable was pregnant, but it has not been determined how far along she was, said Creel. An autopsy is planned for later today.
Creel said Heggie is being held in Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of manslaughter and driving without a license. She could face a third manslaughter charge when it is determined how far along Grable's pregnancy was.
