University of Phoenix...Anyone Attend There?

I was thinking about enrolling in Phoenix University's BS program because it looks like you can get your degree alot faster than other colleges. Plus they give you the option of testing out of your prerequisite classes saving you alot of money and time. You can take one test and get 6 credits towards the 9 you need for math for example. Another benefit is I can do almost everything online if I wanted to which would be a big bonus.

Only thing I worry about is the cost. A total BS degree would run me in neighborhood of $45k. I know that's pretty steep but I figured i'd see what all of you are paying and how long it took/will take you to finish your ba/bs degree. Throw the pros/cons of attending there versus somewhere like ITT Tech, DeVry, or UNLV (for me since I live in Vegas).

Heh I'd go to community college over that place... you might as well buy yourself a degree from the first spam email you get.

Well considering you can't get a BA or a BS at a community college, that kinda cancels out that option. Now why would you choose a community college over those if that were an option?

Ok but you're not giving any reasons behind your opinion.

go to community college for the basics and then transfer to a 4 year school to finish up. probably a lot cheaper than $45k...

isn't Phoenix supposed to be a scam or something anyway?

ahem... attend? Attend is where you actually show up and actually interact with actual people. The term "go to" doesnt even work here. I don't really know what to call it actually. Enroll? That's probably best. Don't flatter it with "attend" though.

Well Phoenix does offer a similar cheap plan like that as well. You can go do only your associates part first and then transfer to finish the rest of your BS. That means the first two years would all be online courses at a lower rate. Unfortunately the lower rate is $300 a credit vs like $116 a credit at UNLV. Now that's not counting in the additional fees a normal college has plus the costs of books. All Phoenix's books are online and at your disposal from any computer. Books can get pretty expensive....as well as heavy 😛

Umm Phoenix University has many campuses where you go to class at. Most people just choose the online option as it's easier. There's a campus right down the street from me.

The fact that all of those online universities spam the hell out of everyone's email box does not help in building a good reputation for higher learning.

That I agree with. Of course one could argue that since it's not an obvious State college that it has to find a way to advertise itself. I could do with a little less spam though lol.

You essentially pay more for "convenience". I know people that went there who were working full time, and going to UOP allowed them to do both. Plus, UOP has several campuses, so it is a bit more convenient than most state schools.

That's pretty much my feeling on it as well. It's add alot of convenience and even at their slowest pace without testing out of a single class, I can finish my BS in under 4 years. Most full time people attending a university can't get it done that fast. I can do as many classes as I want online and then any classes I choose to attend are from 6-10pm at night which is convenient for me workwise. Their classes are 9 weeks long for the first 2 years and then 5 weeks long for the last 2 years as you finish up your BS. I'm just trying to see how fast other people are finishing up and how much they are spending.

By "Phoenix University" do you mean "University of Phoenix"? I believe pyonir used to work there, he might have some insight.

Any particular reason why? Btw University of Phoenix again has actual campuses...not just online only courses.

U of P does NOT look good on a transcript if you ever decide to get a graduate degree. They prefer to see a 4 year institution. Plus I just think the quality of education at a state school is much better than this private online school.

How do you know it looks bad? Like have current or ex employers mentioned that to you or do you know people that have experienced this after attending?

University of Phoenix is not accredited for MOST of the degrees they offer which means your degree is the equivalent of garbage to many employers.

The major complaints with the University of Phoenix are as follows:

# Lack of Professional Accreditation for Most Degrees
# "Boiler Room" Recruiting Practices
# Use of Spam to Recruit
# Misrepresentations and False Guarantees by Recruiters, Counselors, and Financial Aid
# Poor Customer Service
# Poor Quality of Instruction
# Poor Technology Infrastructure
# Poor Quality of Classmates
# Financial Aid Carelessness
# General Lack of Respect for the Customer (Student)
# Education Does Not Meet Federal Guidelines
# Abysmal Graduation Rates

Well that's an unbiased source if I've ever seen one. I would rely 100% on their opinions.
