Ban universities.

Yeah, and schools and movie theaters as well. That's where these things keep occurring.

Note that those places are also "weapon free" zones where an attacker doesn't have to worry as much about getting shot by someone with a concealed carry permit. What a coincidence, eh?

I posted it here because there are always so many pro/anti gun nuts in P&N effing up the threads. I didn't realize how many of them had escaped. :(

To tell you the truth, I always thought that ATOT was officially the intended place to gleefully F up the threads, and that P&N was intended to stay serious and on-topic. :(

I am unable to handle conflict and tragedy like an adult so I need ATOT to please allow me to continue to act like an ass.

Ban universities.

Ban universities in Merced. I keep waiting for the Regents to pull the "Psyche! Just kidding!" part of the UC Merced announcement. It's only been about 20 years, if they still haven't announced it was a joke in another 20 then I might start believing they did something as stupid as put a UC campus in Merced.

Off tangent, but I have always been curious about what makes something a P&N topic and what then is allowed in Off-topic. Because this seems to be more of a Politics & News thread to me. Just want to know this difference so I can put future posts in the right forum.

This is why I made a request/suggestion a while back that they rename the forum to Politics & Economics (OT serves for all other news, and Discussion Club for more philosophical and religious topics) because it would make more sense, but no one seemed to agree.

Key here is "all 5 are alive".

Can't say the same for mass shootings.

Actually, most of them do survive. If the person in question had ANY knowledge of anatomy (meaning if the public school system would do its job) then he could have easily killed all 5 of them.

Of course, if America had better public education, then the sheep might wake up one day, and politicians cannot have that.

Issue is politics encompasses or is a large part of philosophy, religion and economics. The issue is most people in P&N (or anywhere for that matter) have their own axe to grind and don't care about staying on-topic. So you get never ending sub-debates and a thread about healthcare ends up talking about the merits of atheism. :p

No real fix for it IMO unless Anandtech hires a large team of paid, dedicated forum debate moderators with rights to ban people from threads if they repeatably go off topic, but that isn't going to happen.

Where would you have put it? The regents said for years that they were planning on putting a campus in the San Joaquin Valley because its an under served area. Being it was going to be placed in the valley the land they bought from that trust was ideal - 7,000 acres in the foothills north of town. No other city had anything remotely as good and that's why they it's there. Hardly "stupid".

Wait, there is a UC Merced? I thought they just had a JC.

Its been open ten years and planning/construction started in the early 1990s. Has close to 7,000 students now. As far as the community college goes, that's where I put my first two years in. I lived in Merced for five years in the 90s and have been around there all my life thanks to extended family. All this campus violence stuff seems kind of removed until it happened somewhere I'm familiar with.

When I played JC basketball in the early 90's we played Merced. There wasnt much around there. A UC is a big boy school...I could only get into a CSU. Actually, I didnt bother with UCs because I couldn't afford it. Anyways, just kinda surprised one's there, although I guess Davis isnt that great of a location either.

Yeah, if there had been a UC there when I finished at Merced College I would have definitely made use of it instead of a CSU.

That's what happens when only one person has a knife. If they all had knives this wouldn't have happened ... right?

I would of threw a desk, used a fire extinguisher. Point is anything can be used as a weapon. I have this mentality everywhere I go. I also carry a tactical pen. http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=37765366&postcount=22

I myself have subdued a guy trying to stab me. It's really not that hard if you know what to do. You know, now that I think of it, perhaps colleges should have a mandatory self-defense class. I mean with all the damn shit going on and all. Woman could definitely benifit.

Spoken by someone who probably knows nothing about the place other than what they seen on the highway to Yosemite.

Well...I lived and worked in the area for 25 years. While I never lived in Merced...or Merced county, I spent quite a bit of time working in/around the town.

We left San Francisco when I was a kid and moved to Oakdale in Stanislaus County. Had family in Merced and Fresno that I frequently visited (so I'm basically a Valley Boy). After that five years in Merced I went to San Francisco State to finish my BA degree. Then I took a job in Monterey and lived there for ten years. So basically, I have other points of reference in parts of the state that are highly regarded. I still like Merced and enjoyed going back. Its a pleasant small city - clean, lots of trees and bike paths, friendly people, no pressure, easy access to Yosemite. Basically, I can find something to like about any place I live.

I traveled for decades. My work took us to Modesto in the late 80's...we stayed in Modesto/Turlock until we moved back to Warshington in 2012. I agree...sort of...if you try, you can USUALLY find something to like about almost any place.

Faisal Mohammad, who was killed by University of California Merced police, was described by at least one witness as smiling as he slashed at victims, called a loner by a fellow dorm resident and drew praise Thursday from a Twitter account associated with ISIS, which just last week released a series of videos calling for lone wolf stabbing attacks.

“May Allah accept him,” read a tweet in Arabic from a Twitter account that terrorism experts say has carried previous ISIS propaganda, just minutes after Mohammad’s name was divulged by campus authorities.
Campus police shot and killed Mohammad, a computer science & engineering major who graduated from Wilcox High School in Santa Clara last June.
No costs for a trial or incarceration is of course a big plus. Faisal, we hardly knew ye.
