Blah unity will die if they start charging for it.
I think at this point they realize they can't keep the boat afloat.
It reminds me of the cryengine, and how it lost to unreal.
 
No doubt he wasn't the only one driving this scheme. The top has crumbled. There are more to fall.
Unity needs to completely clean house starting at the top before they can claw their way back from this. They torched the bridges without hesitation all in the name of profit and are now upset that people pushed back.

The permanent problem is they've proven they can make retroactive changes whenever they please, regardless of what they promised in the past.

About the only way to be certain now is if they change the license to GPL/MIT.
