My girlfriend's girlfriend's fiancee just got a range rover. But he lives in the projects with his mom. We had dinner last night to celebrate their engagement. I asked them why he got the range and he said you only live once. I called him an idiot for buying such an expensive toy considering where he lives and was about to get married. Insults followed and I was asked to leave the restaurant.

My gf told me to be more discreet but somebody had to put that idiot in his place. Too bad for me though, I really wanted to test drive that car.

Yeah you're the asshole. Granted I don't agree with his purchase its not my place nor yours to tell him what to do with his money. You just had to open your mouth and ruin the engagement celebration dinner.

EDIT: Sorry let me emphasize that it was supposed to be an engagement celebration. I mean you basically called the man your girlfried's girlfriend was about to marry an "idiot". Not very smooth and sort of a dick move regardless of if you were correct about his purchase decision.

Well every situation is different. Seeing as this would have been some guy who wasn't going to be in my extended family, I probably wouldn't have said anything at all. Now, if it was my sister ok I'd probably say something, but I would have at least held my tongue until I could talk to her in private and not embarrass the fiance in front of everyone. I mean really, how did you expect the guy to react after you called him out like that, and in front of his future wife?

Anyway, like I said, I agree it wasn't a smart purchase, but it wasn't worth pointing out in my opinion. So yes you were an ass for bringing it up, but don't worry Im an ass too.

Your girl is correct. This was their celebration and a dinner at that. Basic manners and tact mean you keep your mouth shut in such a social situation involving finances, family, your girl, etc.

While the dude is an idiot, you can't control other people and I'm not surprised you were asked to leave for being so blatantly rude and tacky.
