I think lots of people like to believe that everything can have a simple answer and that you can always apply rules consistently. In reality every situation is different and the application of rules must be flexible.

I'd be on board with backing up SK if they made the call that it's time to roll north, but otherwise paying a few tens of millions a year is a pragmatic solution when faced with a nuclear-armed belligerent with a standing army of 1 million. Unless of course we're going for the surest win scenario, which would be a simultaneous nuclear strike of half the country. Now that's pragmatic.
