My God. Can somebody who follows the bible please come in and explain this for us? I knew there was a reason I stopped going to church. >>
I come from a Christian background, just so you know. I don't consider myself a Bible expert, nor I am one who is authorized to interpret scripture correctly. However, this is what I understand to be correct. I welcome insightful correction...
Since it is in the book of Leviticus, one has to immediately realize that the above quoted scripture has no real application to Christians today. Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy contain the Law of Moses, known by some as a "lessor law." Because the Children of Israel who followed Moses were not ready for a full, Christ-based law, as evidenced by their idolatry and other sins, the Lord saw fit to give them a law that spells out basically EVERYTHING that they could and could not do. The ten commandments were not everything the Children of Israel were to follow. Many ritualistic, temple-based commandments, as evidenced by the above scripture, were given.
In turn, when Christ came, he fulfilled, or brought to an end, the law of Moses and gave to the world a higher law, one based on following
principles of righteousness, and not just spelled-out rules. The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is a prime example to look at, if you wish to study the issue further. Once the law had been fulfilled, it became unneccesary for people to go through all the crap that these Density people are worrying about.
Of course, you might wonder what the Lord was trying to teach his people in the first place when he gave scripture that we might consider ridiculous today. My guess is that there was some symbolism in the ritual which I'm sure some of the Priests of the day knew about. But what do
I know about the symbolism? Nothing, really, and to be honest, and I don't and shouldn't care. I try to follow the principles of the Gospel, and not the detailed rules. I'm trying to be like Jesus, not Moses.
