oh wait wait, i am new to this voltage current stuff just start reading on web today and my roommates books. seems like current is what creates heat and it is linear to friction so therefor linear to the amount of heat generated? a 25% increase in current would make a 25% increase in heat generated?

While you can use typical forward voltage values to get a ballpark, for failure prevention purposes you have to calculate worst case (max and/or min. values). That's 1.2V, forward voltage at 125C @ 16A. I'm going to avoid extrapolating (as you put it), because graphs aren't necessarily able to be extrapolated, they are often meant to be the spec'd operational range but another more complex expression than the simple single digits they follow.

[ V(f) @ I(f) ] * I(f) = W
1.2V * 20A = 24W

Too many variables remain to resolve this to a case temp, such as that the worst case V(f) would be higher than 1.2V @ 20A, ambient temp, active airflow rate, current->heat from other actives on the same 'sink, plus it's using an unknown quality silicone pad.

haha this is fun.
is that what that static electrical characteristics table is? I see a 1.20Max .95Typical there on table next to Tj = 125 and IF=16A

I have no idea realy what a PSU is but I will need to buy this to see this diode that everybody is so happy fun about

While everyone is arguing over lifespan, realize it is FREE. And IF it does blow and you choose not to claim on the warranty there is a 120mm fan in there to extract as well as a 120mm fan grill. That means free fan with grill (a $10+ value). All you have to do is splice a male molex on to the fan wire.

I think people realize that - they just want to be elite and all ;) . Okay, so arguments have been made about it not being as good as "better" 400W PSUs. Sounds reasonable. However, I don't think someone dropping $2k (randomly chosen cost) on a new system would be using a free PSU to power their overclocked C2D with Crossfire. I don't think even a "better" 400W PSU can handle that strain. I still think it's a great value for a $25 PSU, let alone FAR.

Sure it's a great value, but there is a lot of middle ground between a system this could run and the theoretically highest load possible from some o'c, SLI'd monster gamer box. That middle ground could be filled by a better 400W PSU.

In short it all comes back to the same thing I've been saying all along, this should not be rated as a 400W PSU. If you feel your system could run from a 12V-optimized 300W, or ~ 18 months old pre-ATX 2.0, 350W PSU, then this may be a great deal. On the other hand if you have reason to suspect you need a 400W PSU, this misrated unit should be recognized for what it is.

Yeah I learned the hard way long ago to make copies of everything at the time I order anything. Personally I make .pdf's of each and every screen. Overkill for sure but then I have a complete record of the transaction in the event they try to screw me later.

I know on the deals RS had awhile back the next day all the rebate links were dead and gone. Thank the lord I had saved them all as .pdf's.

Just this week Staples "lost" my rebate submission for $140 for Peachtree accounting (Only the 2nd time I have every had an issue with a Staples rebate, out of hundreds and hundreds submitted). I have complete copies of everything, which they had me fax to them, and now the rebate is on its way.

Most rebate houses love if you don't have keep copies. No way to prove your submission, so you are SOL.
