This is also good at Bayarea Fry's. Picked one up on Friday. Free is always good, but it is an Onrebate.com rebate. Rebate form is here, but purchase dates end August 29th.

Techgage liked it.
Motherboards.org looked at a case that came with the power supply, and while it fluctuated under a large load, it looks like it would be fine for a low-end system.

I'm in. I have a few low-end systems and never know when one of the power supplies will die.

yes I agree with Louise, save the cash for seasonic or one of the top models that saves electric bill and provide better power.

why not just get a seasonic 300 watt for a "low end system"
low end system doesn't mean crappy quality parts

The Seasonic is likely better, but if a $0 PSU works for your cheap system, why buy a $50 PSU? After all, if budget allowed you would not to be shopping for the cheapest parts anyway. This will be nice in the FAR case recently available at Microcenter (continuing my quest to build another totally free system). Thanks OP.

Why so down on this unit? Its a lifetime warranty and has some very good reviews. Not highly efficient but not low end either and solid voltages. Any component could cause a problem not just the p/sup. It looks good has the bigger fan with tons of breathing and quiet. I think the ultra X had issues but the V series has good reviews. I have run some real crap power supplies before. Never hurt anything. Never took out data. I run 24/7 till they go out usually in 1-3 yrs then slap another one in. I figure this p/sup is too good for my $70 frys cpu/motherboard combo . Just face it. Its all junk. Now go back up your data because its your only chance.

Back in the game -- new rebate period from 8/30 through 9/30 still with the free shipping offer makes this a nice cheap PS if you need a basic replacement or whatever.

Yeah, good idea, spend more on a Seasonic, even though you don't need it. Sorry, but Ultra hating is so out of control. Somebody please go pull up that MaxiumPC review where they claim it blew it on them. Meanwhile, myself, and tens of thousands of other people will happily use our Ultra PSU's, and continue to recommend them to anyone who asks. People who dislike Ultra, haven't used a PSU from them. The proof is in the pudding, ask almost anyone who owns one, and they will recommend it I assure you.
and FREE is a totally bad deal, for what amounts to a good psu (good, not decent...)
This is a good psu, FREE or not it's better then alot of the crap people recommend. Not to mention it has a lifetime warentee, my 150 dollar Enermax couldn't even claim that ;)

Ultra hating is often due to the fact that, outside of PC gear targeted to general consumers, in the engineering and design world, a switching PSU that can't meet it's rating for life is considered a fradulently rated product that should be seized at the dock.

It's obviously true that it's a great deal at $0 AR, but you may be supporting fraud by paying them for this (even considering FAR, we know it's not a 100% rebate payout, they had to have a calcuated profit expectation in the first place).

To put it another way, if you found a car on sale that claimed 30 MPG, but it has to be going downhill with a tailwind to get 30 MPG, is that ok? If you buy soup that claims 12 oz. in the can, but you have to add water to get 12 oz, is that ok?

The answer is no. Standardized specs such as wattage, current, temp, MTBF while achieving the other specs, are at the core of proper PSU selection. It is the consumer's right to get what the product claimed and when there is an established industry specification, for the unit to clearly note when it is using some non-similar rating system.

The issue is not about "for $X will it run some system that needs less power than it's rated to provide". That's the whole PURPOSE of ratings!

This being a hot deals forum, obviously some will find this a good choice, it's merely important to recognize all 400W PSU are not created equal. To many of us this is obvious, but only because someone already explained it... like here, now, or whenever.

I just recieved mine in the mail. I have one quick question....
How do you quickly check if the PS is "good" without connecting it to anything besides the power outlet? Should the fan start to spin? Mine doesn't.
BTW it has been ages since I have messed with a PS that wasn't connected to a mobo.

^ It's not supposed to spin just by plugging it into the wall socket. You have to plug it into a motherboard and short the power switch pins (or attach a case power button and hit it) to get the power supply going

Peace

Great PSU if your not running anything high-end. Wouldn't consider putting it in a system with anything more then a 7900GT.

I got a confirmation for the outpost $50 Ultra X-Finity earlier this week. $5 for a 500W PSU. Not too shabby.

Same PSU that comes with many Ultra cases such as the Micro Fly. 20a on the 12+ isn't that bad for an SFF rig or a lower end gamer rig.

Actually 20A is close to fine for just about any modern CPU, GPU and single HDD. I'm running a 7900GT, overclocked Opteron 144 and a single HDD on 16A.

Registered the rebate online last week, mailed the rebate form, receipt (email AND packing slip), and UPC code at the same time, and got the rebate in my PayPal account today! Pretty sweet. Total cost was $2.50 for the expedited rebate and sales tax. Not bad!
