Having long hair does not equal "unprofessional hippie", moron. If you don't dress or smell well and have a shitty attitude in combination with having long hair, then you could make that argument. Having long hair alone shouldn't make a difference for the vast majority of customers in terms of how they look at an employee.

It shouldnt but it does. Welcome to the real world kid.

Got through the first page and couldn't go on reading the rest. Too many "me firsts" already. "You shouldn't be judged on your appearance, wah, wah, wah"

You are selling your company to a customer. The company exists because of the customer. If the customer thinks you are an unprofessional hippy and they don't want to do business with you, the company suffers. It has nothing to do with the company, and everything to do with the client.

Would you buy food from a guy who looks and smells like he hasn't bathed in a month? No, because he doesn't look like someone you want to buy food from. It has nothing to do with his ability to cook, and he can easily take all the appropriate steps to keep the food from getting his germs, but that's not a chance you are willing to take.

Get the hint, people. Your company is in the business of making money, which involves putting forth a professional, competent image to impress clients into doing business with them. Your personal "freedoms" that you think you deserve don't mean jack shit because you are dealing with your company's future, not yours.

Wow, it is as though you didn't actually read the thread at all. Or look at the poll results.

I'm going with LOL_Wut_Axel on this.

My hair is about shoulder length. I spend at least 30 minutes on my hair every morning. It is fucking beautiful. I get compliments all the time from coworkers and CUSTOMERS. Beautiful long curly hair + professional attitude/clothing is working out great for me. On the other hand, I do live in a liberal mecca. It would probably be harder for me to pull it off in more conservative areas.

Looks like someone is having a shitty day. Believe me, if you have the same extremely horrible attitude you're displaying here in a corporate environment, it'll make way more clients fly away than someone simply having long hair.

It would, but I don't. Still doesn't change the fact that long hair is not very professional and doesn't put the best foot forward for the company, thus is looked down upon.

Looks like it's you that needs to get a clue.

"I'm going to make a statement that is completely off topic, then claim it makes me right somehow."

You were really stretching for that one. You STILL don't have a god damn clue what you are talking about. Personal appearance affects customer relationships. Period.

I didn't say it won't make any difference; I said for the majority of people it won't make any difference, not all.

Being slightly overweight or tall falls into this category as well; doesn't mean we should be firing people for it.

Being overweight is a protected class, thus someone can't be fired over it. Having long hair isn't, thus someone can. But you knew that, right? Nope? Oh, just talking out of your ass? Ah, makes more sense now.

most appropriate name on this forum

Sorry, I get tired of the stupid dipshits on this forum who seem to think their personal "rights" should trump anything and everything in existence and that everyone and every entity should bow to what they want.

All you little coddled kids need to get this through your thick skulls: You work for your company, they don't work for you.

Again you demonstrate your inability to read. If you had actually read the thread or looked at the poll results, you'd see that most people think he SHOULD get his hair cut. The only difference between you and most of the other people here is that you're just much more angry about it. Maybe you should see a therapist or do yoga or something.

I wager that at least one person in this company who meets with big clients has an absolutely hideous comb-over.

Some guys can get away with having longerish hair and still look professional. Some can get away with an unshaven look or beard or goatee, others can't. You need to figure out if you can pull it off.

With that being said if your hair is >= shoulder length you simply cannot pull it off, nobody can.

IMO this is the longest any guy should ever venture to go, and even then you better have the look and hair to pull it off.

There is also a mustache and goatee in the picture, but they weren't mentioned.
When you say a mustache and goatee, are they connected (as in a circle beard) or are you rocking a mustache with a separate goatee? If it's the latter, combined with the long hair, you might as well start dressing in oversized frilly shirts and giant coats, because apparently you think that "Captain Morgan" is an appropiate style for a professional office. And I'm in complete agreement, by the way. Dress like a pirate, go into work, and commandeer your boss' desk. That'll show the lily-livered son of a biscuit eater who the real man is.

I am unable to connect the two or grow a full beard, and have been called out in public for general pirateness. It's just how it goes.

However the Captain Morgan has done fine in the professional office up to this point, and I could continue in my well paying and entirely satisfactory position as Captain Morgan into perpetuity. But I can't become the admiral.

That's a TV hairstyle. If you showed up to real life with that hair style then you're a total idiot.

LOL that you had to be told this! How many studies out there that good looking people advance faster and further in their careers? Now either go with the flow and succeed or stand your ground and lose.

You demonstrate your inability to interpret data AND read. Polls don't give reasons, thus you can't draw any substantial conclusions from it because there could be any number of reasons to vote either way. The poll does not act like an electoral vote. It's not all or nothing. 20% of pollsters (at this time) say don't cut the hair. 20%. Not 0%.

There are several posters who seem to think it's legally actionable (lol, kids are so stupid) or shouldn't/doesn't matter (lol again). Sorry, the real world doesn't work like that.

You're a hopeless moron.

Because I know that appearance matters in business and you seem to think it doesn't? Being attractive helps quite a bit, being ugly hurts quite a bit. Get over yourself and join the real world. Here's another shock for you: Personality matters, too! Well, holy shit. Imagine that, someone who is nice to look at and easy to talk to have an advantage. Too bad, that's two strikes for you.

Quick, make a post that veers away from the fact you were wrong and call me a moron again. That'll help your cause, especially with those "special" posters who haven't been following the thread!

Yar, ye be sailing the high seas o' professionalism. Prepare to board the ship o' responsibility... And cut your damn hair. Including your piratical facial hair, which, let's face it, doesn't exactly scream professional. Your client is going to be a bit distrustful of you if they think that you are drunk off your ass on the finest of spiced rums and mere moments away from running them through with a scimitar. Savvy?

Unless he's looking for a job AS a pirate, in which case he'll have a (wooden) leg up on the competition.

So as long as even 1% of people disagree with you, you'll just keep shouting that everyone here is an idiot?
