I don't think they're any more evil than any other mega-retail store, but I don't shop there because the checkout lines are long, it's dirty, they carry low quality products, and most people who do shop there are just depressing to be around.

I'll shop there because their prices are usually cheaper than Fred Meyer or Safeway. (Actually, I can't recall when they aren't...) Experience there is no worse than at Safeway or Fred Meyer... so I am not losing anything.

Only reason I don't go now is because there isn't any supercenters within reach in Seattle.

So for people that feel this way, why? Do you have examples of why you hate them?

the walmart by my house (and most ive been in here in the valley) seem to attract the lowest level of people. ive been hit with carts by old ladies telling me im in their way when im not even in the middle of an aisle, ive had ghetto rats try to steal stuff out of my truck, ive had sickos mess with my kids. ill not shop there based on that. i dont even live in a ghetto, and the one in north scottsdale ive been to is just as bad. not to mention their employees are idiots and assholes as well.

For groceries & basic houseware (toilet paper, cleaning supplies, hygene products, ect) I'll shop there anytime. They simply are one of the cheapest grocery stores around for the "staple" products.

That wasn't my experience when I gave it a go a couple years ago. I was feeling particularly butthurt about something, and decided 'eff it, I'm going to Wal-Mart and saving me some money'

First off there were lots of right wing nutter bumper stickers in the parking lot, which I found as bizarre as off-putting. Once inside, shit was all over the place with no rhyme or reason. The stuff that I thought I'd save money on - butter, milk, cereal etc. was all the same price as the GD grocery store. Once I had all my stuff, it took me like 20 minutes to get through the line. There were only 3 or 4 people in front of me, but the transactions went like this:

1. Cashier scans items
2. Customer hands cashier card
3. Cashier swipes card, looks at POS screen
4. Cashier looks up at customer and shakes her head no
5. Customer selects 2-3 items to remove from her purchase
6. Cashier scans the items to remove them, and tries the card again
7. Repeat steps 4-6
8. Repeat steps 4-6
9 Repeat steps 4-6
10.Hey! we finally have enough money. Giant receipt. Goodbye!

Never seen anything like it before. Most of the customers in front of me went through this exercise.

I don't like going there but the prices are much cheaper then the local grocery store (only go to the local grocer for meat and a few other things and there buy one get one free sale). The price difference is just so large for all my normal things I buy that I can't ignore it. I don't mind spending a little bit more somewhere else but when it isn't a little bit and is simply a lot, I can't ignore that.

Only plus side going to Wal Mart is I can do my shopping in the middle of the night when I like too and you can look like a hobo and you still fit in with how everyone else looks.

I've tried going there a few times, because their prices are insanely good. That being said the atmosphere of the stores, at least in the area where I live, are terrible. I saw a white trash looking woman literally smack her child right in the face hard enough that it was loud. Every time I've been to one there are mothers with little kids that are crying like crazy while the mother ignores them, people talking loud and acting rude or ignorant, etc..

It's just a terrible shopping experience.

I avoid them as much as I can. I go to Target instead for stuff like tp and such.

I don't like Walmart because:
A) shitty shopping experience
B) the environment and people there annoy me
C) generally look/feel gross and/or dirty
D) prices are about the same elsewhere
E) haven't had a "good" experience at Walmart
F) usually crazy busy lines whereas Target or other stores can be in and out quicker
G) mislabeling stuff, and not honoring the price (I didn't care enough to fight it)
H) cheap crap that falls apart quickly

I do shop there but not often, first it's always crowded so you wind up parking far away then as others have mentioned there's never enough cashiers, I HATE waiting 20-30 min. to check out. They had self-check outs for awhile but closed them all, I guess folks were stealing all kinds of stuff..

Why does this keep coming up? How can anyone have any strong objection to shopping at Walmart? Walmart is hardly a Foxconn.

The entire union thing is a canard. Only a minority of Walmart's bigger name competitors are unionized (and ONLY in some regions or markets), while NONE of the so-called 'mom and pop' local businesses that Walmart supposedly kills-off are unionized, nor do they pay much more than minimum wage or offer benefits such as health care, profit sharing or stock plans, retirement, tuition reimbursement and real opportunities for advancement. Good luck getting your state's labor department to do anything about your local restaurant or grocer denying breaks, compelling people work overtime, etc.

The union thing is about the fact that Walmart has deep pockets and would cause the union coffers to spilleth over with largesse, nothing more.

Did the unions go around trying to organize the millions of smaller businesses that Walmart is supposed to have killed-off, who collectively employed more people than Walmart? Do they try to do so today to the remaining smaller businesses? Nope. Why? Deeper pockets.

Whenever I go grocery shopping, I try to go to Sam's Club. I prefer to buy a lot at once so I don't have to go shopping again for a while. But when I need a few things, it's either Walmart or a local grocer.

I reluctantly shop there due to severe money issues atm. I don't like the way they treat their employees, and I don't like the price>all format. WalMart, and the people that shop there(myself included) are helping tank this country, and reducing everyone's standards, and standard of living.

Most of the grocery stores around here have self-checkout which is very convenient. Wal-Mart is well behind the times on that one.
Only time I skip self-checkout is to bullshit with one of my old school buddies working cashier.

Yea, self checkout is awesome for when I just have a handful of stuff! It makes "quick trip to the store" possible, even when the store is packed on a weekend!

I shop there when they have things (brand name items such as Campbell soup) on sale.

I also like their 24 hours of operation. Other stores close around 11 p.m. When I used to work in the night shift, I went shopping around 3 a.m. after work and it was quiet and peaceful, just had to watch out for stock boys with big carts in the aisles.

I live in retail heaven, every type of store imaginable. Walmarts around here are decent, not too ghetto. Nearest one is 10 minutes away, in a heavily Hassidic area, so shopping there on Friday after sundown or saturday morning (sabbath) is peaceful and quiet. I go there a lot because Walmart has the best prices I can find on diabetic stuff - test strips, generic insulin, etc, and I don't have health insurance.

The giant Walmart 20 minutes away is great for those times when i have a big, varied shopping list and don't want to go to a lot of different places. Also a really good, for Walmart, food section. The other big Walmart 20 minutes in the other direction still has a fabric & sewing department (I sew costumes for local theater groups) and also is good at stocking clothes, I can always find my size.

Embarassing how well I know the finer points of my different local Walmarts.

I dislike Walmart, but I still go there for some things. Most of my grocery shopping is at Fresh and Easy because its close and light years ahead of Walmart in quality. I pick up my liquor from Bevo or Basha's, primarily.

I do hit Walmart for some things though, odds and ends, or when I need to pick up something at an odd hour. Walmart is open 24/7, most places aren't.
