I have a 1080p 104" 16:9 setup and am looking for the best emulator to use. I will be using my wireless 360 controller that connects via the MS USB dongle hooked into my i5 3570k with 6850 video card. I haven't used an emulator on the PC in 5+ years so I've been out of the loop for quite a while.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure if your rig is capable of emulating nes and snes games at the performance levels you want :awe:.

Snes9x or Znes are great. Some like Bsnes, but I think its more about an exercise in proving exactness, although the very few games that techically need perfection in emulation (and the list of worthwhile ones are very small) do benefit.

As for NES, forget about it and wait till you got a 12 core monster to handle that.

Please tell me that's sarcasm.

We can emulate much more complex consoles like the Megadrive and N64 with ease so I doubt a NES or SNES will be a problem. I've never tried them though, I know my megadrive games on steam worked very well on my 1080p projector, 2D games run at their native res and are upscaled however, which is blocky on a 125" screen but you won't notice that with all the fun you'll be having.

zsnes always worked well for me (since my Pentium 133 days lol), it can definitely run games at high res and apply some nice filters.. even a Pentium 3 should be enough for that (my hacked xbox could handle it at 720p almost 10 years ago)

Oh right well perfect low level hardware emulation in software is of course going to be hard, most old emulators are simply close approximations but run very fast.

I don't see any issue using the wide array of perfectly fast emulators out there, the truth is 99% of everyone is not even going to be able to tell the difference between an approximation and a carbon copy.

NES = Nestopia
SNES = ZSNES or SNES9x

Those are the emulators I use for those consoles. I use my PS3 controller to play them using motionjoy with my bluetooth adaptor.

I use an old school infocus projector for my old school gaming needs. PSX, N64, SNES, GENESIS,NEO GEO its perfect.

Couple weeks ago, had a couple friends over and play Neo Turf Masters on a Neo Geo emulator. That mixed with alcohol, made for some good times.

SNES and NES look like absolute dog shit on a 1080p display let alone 100"+, ask me how I know.

You really want one of these for pre 480p content:

Save your projector for things with HDMI or at the very least 480P over component.

Oh, and avoid NTSC like the plague.

I use FCE Ultra for my Nintendo Emulation on a 73 inch DLP. I think it looks really good and is very playable.

I think the people whining about how it will look are forgetting the NTSC filter? Or the HQ*X filters? Or never knew if they're still recommending ZSNES.

Different beasts, but just filter the image to either go retro or gussy it up. It'll look fine.

SNES9x is probably the best all-around SNES emulator. If you have the hardware beef, bsnes is also excellent. I don't know about NES emulators, but since no one recommended NESticle, I imagine the recommendations in this thread will be fine. I have heard good things about FCE Ultra, though.

Well, 100" I don't know, but one of the first things I did with my 40" TV was to make sure my SNES and NES worked on it okay...and they do. They look great, better than ever.

I actually played Megaman 1-8 (had played most of them before) on my 40" set and...yeah, they look good.

I find that hard to believe.

Megadrive games look like this on my 1080p 125" diagonal projector, 4:3 is a bit smaller since it uses only a portion of the screen, at the bottom of the image is my PS3 for size perspective.

This looks and plays amazing.

As much as your setup makes me jealous, not everyone wants to go wading through the dump to find an old studio reference monitor. ^_^

Emulators are better to use for modern HD displays as you can use smoothing filters. I like JNES and SNES9X myself. They all have joypad support as well.

Actually i prefer to play them at 1:1 resolution on a 4" display or so. That is when you can appreciate the real beauty of snes games. The stretch provided by televisions (SD or HD) just takes away too much once you see the 1:1 artist vision.

The only downside is playing on a tiny screen...

Lol.

I found mine on eBay for $150 shipped. Privately owned with only 100 hours on the tube!
