Ultimate Gaming Monitor? Overlord Tempest X270OC

Only go for tried and tested monitors where there are many satisfied owners and user communities to exchange feedback with. So far the top 3 are Overlord 270OC, Catleap Q270 (with 2b PCB), and Qnix Q2710 EvoII. All of these are single input DVI-D displays. Multi-input units do not OC well (if at all).

thank you, for the help.....btw: what is dvi-d

to overclock a monitor you dont need CRU with nvidia cards. Just make a custom resolution in the nvidia control panel and set the hz you are after. easy peezy.

The DVI connector. It must be dual link to get 2560x1440 bandwidth through. So DVI-I or DVI-D dual link:

Really? But you still need to patch the driver for it to hold. The CRU utility adds more tweaking ability to it to fine tune your OC (ie, front and back porch, sync width, etc) which can make the difference between a high OC working or not.

i didn't need to do anything other than set a custom rez for my korean 1440p. no driver patch no cru. Verified the overclock with the usual blurbuster sites

OK, havent done it before through NV CP. And apparently Nvidia do offer settings to fine tune the OC as with CRU. With most people its never needed, but those who have difficulty reaching their desired OC, raising the pixel clock and adjusting other settings can make a difference. The patch apparently removes the pixel clock limits which allows for a higher degree of OC control.

Correct, though that assumes you are using a recent card with latest drivers.

Multi input + overclock? Suspicious. Very, very few of the multi input monitors have been shown to overclock. And even those were limited to 85hz. It is far more likely that this one does not in fact overclock, and skips frames when a signal>60hz is fed to it.

As for the tempest - it works. It's the "k" series of monitors. We don't complain about Intel not guaranteeing 7.2ghz overclocks, why should we be so skeptical about a much smaller company not guaranteeing 120hz overclocks? Especially if the monitor is *cheaper* than many other competing 1440p monitors. It overclocks. If there has been no user reviews, true, skepticism is the order of the day (such as the monitor above). But there are dozens of user reviews and they are generally positive.

What you should be concerned about -
It overclocks, but you might not get all the way to 120hz. It isn't unusual to get 120hz.
Motion blur of reduced, but only by up to half, strobe lights are still better.

oops....that other monitor i agree with what you say, im all the way with OLT-2700C!!! when it comes out

You guys are doing it all wrong. EVGA pixel clock tool is the only way to deal with a monitor OC if you have an Nvidia card. You can set any refresh rate you want by just dragging a slider. It's handy as hell for those games where you want a locked framerate, but can't get a full 120fps. I set a different refresh rate for almost every game i play. its way easier than having to select a custom resolution anytime you want to change, plus DSR works with it up to 99hz, and it doesn't work at all with custom resolutions.

I went ahead and ordered one of these from newegg. I was bit disappointed when I opened the box and a plastic piece that attaches to the back of the monitor was broke. I went ahead and fired it up....no dead pixels, no stuck pixels. Small amount of bleeding at the edges. The stand is funky and does not instill a lot of confidence, but it hasn't fallen over yet.

I was able to hit 100hz easily, 120 failed initially but I have not tried any of the numerous tips to reach 120. Great looking screen, good colors. Overall, was very happy for the price I paid.

Out of the three 1440p monitors I have, the Q270 2b is my favorite. And same as you when I opened the box that decorative plastic arc on the back was broken. Would have tore it off anyway since its useless. I have no problem with the stand even though I know many complain about it. Only reason I prefer this display over the Qnix is due to its glossy screen vs the matte on the Qnix.

After reducing vertical blanking total to 1450 per toasty's instructions, I was able to get 120hz refresh on the catleap monitor I linked above. Quite frankly I think this monitor is a steal at the current price.
