Then you will rarely, if ever, be recognized for your efforts...

Thing is, I do not NEED recognition for my efforts in anything I do.
Then you likely won't get the compensation or promotions you deserve. And it may not be an issue in a small store, but wait until you're in a bigger company and come across that special breed of co-worker who will happily take credit for your work behind your back.

You don't have to stand on the boss' desk and scream "LOOK AT ME LOOK WHAT I DID, PRAISE ME" -- the idea is to keep him informed of what you've done lately and what has happened as a result. If you know he's aware of your contributions and you still aren't satisfied with how you're being treated, then it's time to look elsewhere.

Well, now I have heard it all...

I work in a local PC store and I spend alot of time on Anandtech forums as well as other forums during my work days and nights. Hell, I even drum up business for this store when I am not working.
Anyway, ever since I began doing business online through forums, it seems the store has been doing alot better(local mom and pop stores don't always fair so well with bigger chain stores nearby). I am the one that goes over invoicing, shipping, receiving, and so forth, so I can plainly see how much money my extra effort is bringing in.
Today, my boss walks in and about 10 min into his day, he starts bitching about how I spend too much time online and not enough time focusing on my duties.

I think it may be time for me to part ways with this job

Here's a crazy idea. Why don't you tell him exactly what you told us and that you've been helping the business so it's in his best interest to let you do what you've been doing.

nah man. that's TOO crazy for him to do. it makes NO sense at all

Does it really make sense to have to go to your boss and say..."Look what I did, you should be more happy with me." Thats just lame and seems quite immature to me.

Some day you'll understand how business works. Not today, but some day.

Just stop. Send a message to the people in forums that you won't be able to take orders for a while. The business will be cut off, his revenue will drop because he asked you to completely stop. He'll feel the strain then get mad and make a decision.

With increased revenue becomes increased overhead and/or operational cost. The overhead for posting in forums is the amount of time 'wasted' posting in forums. If he is just slow and doesn't get it, quit. But he should realize that the time spent in forums is actually acquainting yourself with customers, future and present. Hell, look at the following Newegg has here on AT or any good business.

Let it ride. Or better yet. Quit and take your customers with you and start your own company. It's not that hard to do.

Oh he is aware alright. Not more than two weeks ago he came in early(I usually open up the store) and says..."Can you get these personal things of mine sold on the forums?" Three days later he had an extra $1000 in his pocket

We personally don't care what you do. We're trying to save your ATOT surfing but you don't wish to take the necessary steps to do so, thus it's your loss.

I dont recall asking if you care:p I was just posting to get it off my chest. Like so many of you do here.

Sorry, that didn't come out in text the way I had intended it to sound. I meant if you toot your own horn or not is of no concern to us since it's your life but we only trying to get you to understand that it may result in your boss not seeing the benefits of your efforts and in turn losing the ability to surf forums.

Oh well, it is time for change I guess

You don't need recognition? So you don't care about promotions and pay increases? In the working world, where adults make their living, it doesn't matter whether or not YOU know you do the job well, if the people PAYING you don't know you're doing the job well. If you can't sell YOURSELF, why would your boss have confidence in your ability to do the same for his/her business?

I have always gotten pay increases and promotions.

If I was a boss and people constantly felt the need to point out what they did, I think I would let them go. Thats a bit childish.

A supervisor or boss's job is in part to pay attention to what employees are doing and how well they are doing it.

And they may do that in a perfect world.

But here in the real world, that is simply not the case the vast majority of the time, and the ones collecting all the accolades and promotions are the ones who make their presence and their achievements known. And, those people often are NOT the top performers, but they've got the shoddy management convinced they are because they make it known what they do.

MX2times: There is a difference between constantly boasting about what a good job you do, and keeping your boss up-to-date on what you're working on and how it's going. You say that a supervisor's job is to keep an eye on people and see what they are doing...well, that's kind of hard if the people don't talk about it, yes? Besides, supervisors are lazy too...they'll just glance at you and judge your work based on that snapshot. Which is why you're getting in trouble...he sees you on the forums and assumes you're wasting time. It's up to you to let him know how much business you're bringing them.

I was just about to post that. It's not about how good a job you do...it's about how good a job management THINKS you do. Obviously you want to do a good job...fakers always get caught eventually...but if management never hears about it, you don't get ahead.

quantify your results... not only to shut him up but to help with that raise you're about to propose.
