Well, now I have heard it all...

I work in a local PC store and I spend alot of time on Anandtech forums as well as other forums during my work days and nights. Hell, I even drum up business for this store when I am not working.
Anyway, ever since I began doing business online through forums, it seems the store has been doing alot better(local mom and pop stores don't always fair so well with bigger chain stores nearby). I am the one that goes over invoicing, shipping, receiving, and so forth, so I can plainly see how much money my extra effort is bringing in.
Today, my boss walks in and about 10 min into his day, he starts bitching about how I spend too much time online and not enough time focusing on my duties.

I think it may be time for me to part ways with this job

Here's a crazy idea. Why don't you tell him exactly what you told us and that you've been helping the business so it's in his best interest to let you do what you've been doing.

He is aware of how much money my efforts bring in. Besides if he choses to ignore the facts, why should I have to say it? I am not one to blow my own horn for recognition.

Then you will rarely, if ever, be recognized for your efforts...

Thing is, I do not NEED recognition for my efforts in anything I do. I know I do the job well and I do it right. Just this past week I have been staying late and going in early, on my time, to help with some issues that have arisen.

Oh well, it is time for change I guess

Why not? It probably pays the same and the only thing you have to do is tell old people that if they don't buy extended warrenties that they'll get cancer.

Does it really make sense to have to go to your boss and say..."Look what I did, you should be more happy with me." Thats just lame and seems quite immature to me.

LOL. He doesn't want recognition for his hard work so the only reward he's gonna get is more work and no ATOT.

You say you don't need the recognition, but you would prefer to quit and find another job instead of either giving up the internet activities or trying to convince the boss that it's beneficial.

Perhaps the real truth is that both you and the boss know that your forum surfing isn't really the revenue driver that you make it out to be. Your boss won't buy it if you try to justify it, but giving it up would make you appear guilty......?

We personally don't care what you do. We're trying to save your ATOT surfing but you don't wish to take the necessary steps to do so, thus it's your loss.

That's life. It's even worse if you work for bigger companies, they'll use your lack of input to mean you're not doing anything useful at all. Hello paycuts and pinkslips!

find a way to make up a printable flyer that shows the customer came into contact with your company via the web, if enough customers start bringing them in or mentioning that they found your company thanks to your online efforts your boss will change his tune.

Remember the golden rule,if your effort isn't documented, it's effort wasted. You need to provide measurable results.
