Uh, I think I drank some spoiled milk

Last night I had some milk with dinner. The "sell by" date on the jug said August 15, so I figured it'd be fine to drink. It smelled okay, and it was still smooth, so I drank it.

This morning, I woke up a half hour earlier than I normally do, and I felt like crap. Digestively, I felt fine...I was hungry, I didn't feel sick, but my muscles ached and I just generally felt crappy.

After I had a small breakfast (cereal with NEW milk), I started to feel a little queasy. Now that I'm at work, I feel okay stomach-wise, but my body feels like it's getting the flu - my legs ache, my head feels crappy, etc.

Did I drink spoiled milk, or am I just getting sick?

EDIT:Something is DEFINITELY up. I've been a slave to the toilet (sitting on it, that is) for 4 days now...and it's not getting any better. I must have eaten SOMETHING that went bad, but I have no idea what it was.

I'm just glad I'm not puking into the toilet too! 🙂

You either do or you dont, and for damned sure theres no mistaking if you do!!
Your symptoms sound unrelated. Ive had mild food poisoning before, is mostly vomiting and burning ass. I didnt get aches or pains or fluish type problems.

spoiled milk gives you food poisoning? 😕

once we had a gallon of milk we forgot about in the fridge, by the time we remembered it had expired by 2 or 3 days. definitely spoiled, didn't want to waste food though so i tried to chug it all. got about 1/2 done before started feeling sick. lol.

let me tell you how that feel to drink spoiled milk. last time, it took me about 3 hours to finish a glass of milk. I was really taking my time and the room was about 70f degree. so...I spent my time in the bathroom for most of the following 3 hours.

You are just getting sick. If you got food poisoning you would be throwing up and shitting within 2 to 3 hours.

i doubt it was the milk, but if you start to feel body pains then you're probably in for something bad. when i was in india i had a severe case of food poisoning. the morning before the sickness set in i had body aches and felt light headed.... take some rest. you may need it.

Spoiled milk might make you feel nauseous (or even make you throw up), but I don't think you can get food poisoning from it.

The "sell by" date has nothing to do with when it'll get spoiled...that's just when the store as to...well, sell it by. Of course, it's somewhat of an indicator. But as the other poster suggested, you'll know if it's spoiled or not, no mistaking, baby.

It's pretty unlikey to make you throw up, unless other bacteria have been introduced that have bred. Otherwise it's as dangerous as cottage cheese.

I had food poisoning a few weeks ago, you will have a fever and be pissing out your arse every hour or so. most people vomit with the same schedule, but I never vomit, so that didn't happen to me, although I'm sure I would have felt better if I made myself.

i did in fact feel like i had the flu, achy and tired, even my freaking hair hurt. and the pain was so bad, when i went to the doctor they thought I might have appendicitis so i had to get a CBC and CAT scan of my abdomen with contrast. fun times!

There is a flu bug going around.
I've been sick for the past couple days.
It sucks.

I was at a friend's house, recently, and poured a glass of milk from an unopened container of milk. I took a big chug, when I realized that it tasted extremely foul, and then looked on the bottle for the exp. date. It was over 3 months old! I didn't get sick, but I did take a huge crap a few hours later.:disgust:

Anyway, I found out that they had gotten it for free with their groceries, but nobody there drinks milk, so they forgot about it. Never again will I assume unopened milk means its still good.

There's a difference between food spoilage bacteria that cause foul smells, lumps and gas production, and pathogens that are the bacteria that produce food poisoning. Of the pathogens, there are two types: first are those that multiply in the food and produce toxins, it's consumption of these toxins that make you ill. Problem is, they don't normally alter the taste, smell or texture of the food.
The other type of pathogens only produce their toxins once ingested. For the former, the onset of symptoms is rapid, of the order of 2-6 hours. For the latter, it can take anything up to 72 hours before symptoms show. Starting off with aches and pains suggests there may have been some of the second type present, in which case stand by!
It's a bit the same when it comes to getting rid of them; with the first type, since the poisoning is caused by ingested toxins the natural 'processes' that kick in soon get rid of the toxin so you're fine within 24 hours. However, for the second case, as it's bacteria in the gut that are producing toxins as they multiply, they take a lot longer to shift, can be weeks.

I had food poisoning once.

I began feeling extremely tired and weak. I went home to lay down. I developed a severe stomach ache, and then nausea set in. I ran to the bathroom, but didn't make it. I vomitted the most violently I have ever experienced. In fact, it was so violent I tore the fleshy join between my esophogus and stomach. After seeing blood in my puke I called my GF to take me to the ER (this was during the Norwalk Virus).

They shot me in the buttox with Gravol, tested my blood, and let me sleep for a few hours.

Took a couple days to recover.
