Uh how quiet is the PS3 supposed to be?

I'm very sensitive to noise and the fan on my 60GB PS3 is loud, however, it's an acceptable noise. I don't know, the tone of it is less aggravating than the 360 DVD drive.

It's dead quiet for me most of the time, probably cause it's in one of the coolest rooms in the house, and under a desk with plenty of breathing room on all sides. I have the 40Gb by the way.

However, I have heard the fan ramp up on very hot days (MGS4 running), and it was definately as loud as a 360. Try moving it around.

My 80GB has been whisper quiet. It's 82 degrees in here now, and I'm about to play MLB 08. I'll listen to see what I hear.

My 60GB and 40GB are both usually "silent" (as in, I have to focus to hear them). When I start heavy gaming, you can hear the fans kick in, but it's by no means a "whoosh" of any kind. Generally it's at a volume where I don't even notice them kick in. I would once again have to focus (though not very hard) to hear them.

Simply put, mine are NEVER distracting...at all. My 360 sounded like a mini-vacuum. Ugh, that thing was annoying.

Like everyone said, give your PS3 plenty of breathing room.

i mean, its not unnaturally loud or anything, but i can definitely hear it. its a bit warm to the touch on the bottom, but not a lot. maybe its because my house is fucking hot and its really humid out?

it seems just as loud or louder than the ps2 was. i have no experience with the 360, which is what everyone compares it to.

Reading this topic i'm starting to think there's something wrong with my PS3. I have the 40gb version and it's freaking loud. When I turn it on it's great, virtually silent, but about 10 minutes into whatever I'm doing (whether it's a dvd or a game) the fans inside kick in and go to 100% and there's this huge WHOOSH noise. I actually have to turn up the volume on movies so that I can hear them over the sound of the player.

I have it in a completely open three-tier wire rack laying down flat (horizontal) and nothing is blocking the ventilation holes. Is there something wrong with my PS3?

My 80GB is quiet, but then again I always have my HT system crank so it's not an issue with my PS3 or 360. 😉

One thing about the PS3 is that it's a heater. You ever feel the amount of heat that thing shoots out the back?

i mean, im not really hearing a whoosh, its not really noticable during games or movies unless i pause and try to hear it, but is audible.

think its worth exchanging if i think its too loud? someone over at AVS said they did and their new one was much quieter.

Mine sits next to my tower, which has lots of fans, so I honestly couldn't tell you how loud it is. It's definitely not louder than my tower though.
