Everyone acts like it is so quiet you cant hear it...but this has not been my experience.

I can definitely hear it when i am gaming, and today when i put in a blu ray DVD i heard an almost vibration type noise. It performs flawlessly, but its no less quiet than the PS2 was. Was that just hype? Or is it just quiet compared to the 360 or w/e?

What model do you have? I have a 60 GB, which is supposedly the hottest and loudest, and it's far and away quieter than my Falcon 360 Elite. When it gets hot there is a noticeable "whoosh" sound from it, but I've never heard anything like a vibration... it's dead silent when first turned on. The 40 GBs are supposed to be the most silent.

The 40GB version is supposed to be a little bit more quiet than the 80GB version. But if you have it in an entertainment center, it shouldn't be noticeable.

60gb here:
Open space in a cool room:
Idle: Nearly silent
movie watching: Barely noticeable
Heavy Gaming: noticeable

Warm room with constricted breathing room (like in an A/V cabinet)
Movie watching: Noticeable
Heavy gaming / folding@home: unholy whirling vortex of doom

Mine is dead silent 95% of the time. The only time its not is when I'm playing COD4 for an hour or longer, then the vacuum cleaner inside turns on :)

The 40Gb is far quieter than the 60GB.

360 is much louder though.

I've got the 40gb version and it's virtually silent. I have it sitting 3-4 feet away in the open and it's not noticeable to me at all. My 360 is far and away louder than the PS3.

i have the 60gb version and an external hdd with it. I can hear it, but it's not any louder than the ambient noise in my room.

Then it sounds like ;) the 80 GB did not get the 65nm die shrunk Cell that the 40 GB has, at least not in the first batch of MGS4 bundles.

I wonder if that's why supply was so small, from being caught in between old and new designs?

My 60GB is audible in a silent room at the end of a movie, but not loud.

I have a 60GB, and it is usually pretty quiet. I can become very audible during heavy gaming, though. Still, it is quieter than my 360.

I also have a 60gb and its pretty quiet. Only time it made a whole bunch of noise was when i got home from work and found out it was still on. My ps3 is inside the entertainment cabinet with the door closed. When i turned on the TV, It said it overheated.

yea i have a 60gb one and it can be loud at times but not as loud as the 360 when playing a full game. but when gaming sometimes you can hear the fan kick on and yea, it's far from "silent" when this happens.

I just got my 80GB MGS4 bundle.. and my PS3 is pretty damn quiet. Of course, I haven't heavily gamed on it yet, so I'll update that when I do tonight.. but so far, what a huge difference in noise between it and my 360.

Survey Says!

Ps3 is quiter than the 360 but louder than the thoughts in your head in a quiet room!

What the hell is up with the 360, mine is so ridiculously loud. I'm not even a person that noise normally bothers. I have always had an extremely loud gaming PC, but the fans on the 360 are extremely loud on top of the disk drive sounding like its trying to blend a hand full of nickels.

My 60GB is audible in a silent room at the end of a movie, but not loud.

My parents bought the MSG4 bundle and watched "No Country for Old Men" on Blu-Ray and it was silent. I definitely couldn't hear it when watching the movie (I was about 6' away from it). If you enclose the PS3, it will DEFINITELY get pretty loud because of poor ventilation. However, keep it in an open cabinet and it should be virtually silent. I have the 60GB version and it is extremely quiet. DEAD quite when compared to my vacuum cleaner that is my 360 Elite. That thing (360) has gotten crazy lately. I know it wasn't this loud when I first got it. :|

My MGS4 bundle PS3 was pretty loud until I gave it more room to breathe. Now I rarely hear the fans spin up like the first day I had it where I thought it was going to take off.

same here.

I dont fold but i had once unknowingly blocked the rear vents with some cloth and was confronted by the unholy whirling vortex of doom. no change in performance though.

The 80 GB version seems to be louder than the 40 GB (probably due to 90 nm chips). I echo everybody's comment on keeping it well-ventilated. The fans on the 40 GB we have are silent. There are occasional seek noises but nothing annoying.

Of course, there's always sample variation. It could just be bad luck.

I got the mgs4 80 giger too and I have to say it's damn quiet. Didn't even realize there was a noise issue. Sometimes when the game is loading I can hear the disk churn but that's only a few seconds after turning it on. Pretty well ventilated here though.
