UGH, slow computers suck

i feel your pain. I have a 1Ghz dell at home as a secondary linux box. But here at work i'm on a 450MHz pentiumII w/ 192MB of RAM. AHHHHHH!

Bah, I'm frequently on an athlon 900, and it's not TOO bad for day to day stuff. Even has a geforce 3...so even games play okay, so long as they are not much newer than quake 3.

i'm at home for spring break and i'm stuck with amd 350mhz, 128mb with pc133 speeds, 40x cdrom and 6 freaking gb of storage!

edit: integrated graphics too.

And I'll also bet its riddled with downloads, trojans and other spy/malware. That stuff would bog down even a much faster rig, and is responsible imnsho for more problems than her hardware ( which isnt THAT bad comparatively speaking)
probably needs a disc clean, defrag, if not outright reformat. Not to mention the proper setup settings. Aside from more ram, it should be fairly capable.

I can't stand using computers at school or anywhere else. A P4 1.4GHz with 128MB is defnitely not "more power than anyone needs" ?? Even people who don't know anything about computers can benefit from a fast one.

Yeah, I have about a 4 year cycle time between new computers and I have to say that 4th year is truly painful. I held onto my P133MHz when PII 450's were out. Then I was staying with a P3 500 while P4 2.4G's were out. Now I'm cruising with my A64 3200+. 3 more years to go. 😀

Like EyeMWing say, about 1ghz, 128mb ram and 10gigs HD space is all the normal user needs. This is provided they have adequate AV/AS software installed. I work at the geek squad. We have people bring in 30 day old computers who didn't purchase any AV/AS software that run like dog sh*t. A little intelligence would go a long way.

For what it's worth, other than gaming or CAD applications, I can't see the need for anyone to need a computer faster than about 1 GHz.

If you really want to suffer, come to my house and work on my wife's webpage for me... I have about 10 more MB of data to retrieve from online and 20-30 MB more data to upload......
ON DIAL-UP!

Or, essentially, the 30MB that I have to deal with is going to take hours longer than the 15 minutes you're whining about.

P.S. If you have a hobby or something else to do, you can always keep busy while those big jobs are running...

That's not that slow. I'm sure that system would run just fine if the software was maintained properly.

People have other priorities for their money than spending it on fast computers. Usually thoes priorities involve paying mortgages, bills, children, etc.

I do numerical simulations. I'll take as fast a computer as I can get my hands on. 😉

I was doing a poker simulation the other day. Up until I figured out an optimization trick it was using ~900 MB of RAM storing all of the data. A top-of-the-line computer wouldn't have even blinked at that, but my 4 year old computer ground to a halt. Fortunately I've got it running in <5 MB now. 😀
